When he said, “There are no rules!”, I laughed. Many years ago, I was a Probation Officer and, when I got into altercations with probationers, they were shocked at the things I would do. They were used to breaking all the rules and have everyone else follow the rules. I turned the tables on them. I started Shotokan in 1966 and, after I got out of the Army in 1969, I developed all the techniques that Bertel Sensei demonstrated. Even a senior Black Belt watching me as a Brown Belt, commented after a counter to a much larger opponent, “Interesting counter!” The counter was a brush block and “groin extraction”.
