- The Band of the Scots Guards supported by the 1st Battalion Scots Guards Pipes and Drums leading the annual Scots Guards Black Sunday parade down Birdcage Walk to the Guards Memorial on Horse Guards Parade and back again to Wellington Barracks on Sunday 14th April 2024.
This was also the last parade for their regimental colonel HRH Duke of Kent after 50 years of service to the regiment.

The band was under the direction of their Director of Music, Major Frost and led by the Drum Major of 1st Battalion Scots Guards.

Fantastic parade! Superb playlist and what a tremendous turnout! The Scots' Guards gave the late Queen's cousin, their colonel of 50 years, a well-earned, first class send off. Nice touch to hear The Colonel, composed in his honour, played as the band passed the saluting base. A nice bit of video marking a regimental historic moment, MBE!

I am an Australian and love all things British. I particularly love the bands and the bagpipes. Also love horse guards and anything to do with the Monarchy and Royal family. I guess it's my British heritage. The older I get the more I love it .Thanks for the great video. Val.🐨 💟

Fantastic video Sir!! Both the Pipes & Drums and the Band sounded Spiffing! Some fantastic marches, and even a new one! What a great way to send off the Duke of Kent!! Well done to all who took part! Thanks to MBE for bringing us this wonderful Parade! I got Goosebumps when the Pipes & Drums came in at 14:48!!! Just wonderful!
HI @delvinrodriguez2341 and @ Military Bands Everywhere Wonderful video and as you said Delvin , what a great way to say goodbye to HRH The Duke of Kent. Sad to see him retiring but I know he has some health issues,. Hopefully we''ll see him from time to time.
I had a chat to the Duke of Kent in South Africa when he visited the South African National Museum of Military History. I worked as the armour curator. Impressive parade. I served in the Transvaal Scottish, also a kilted Regiment for 11 years. During WW2 in Italy, 6 SA Armoured Division had a very good working relationship with the Guards Brigade.
I feel at home even though I now reside in Sweden .Bravo.
Always puts a smile on my face to hear one of these bands. What a fitting tribute to all, including their Colonel, HRH Duke of Kent. He has served the Monarchy, showing loyalty and conviction, thank you for 50 years in this particular role, Sir. Loved the little kid, around 15 min in, marching, in step, in uniform, with mace on footpath. He looked so proud to be there. Once again, we all salute you Sir.

I noticed a Coldstream plume and there could have been Grenadiers and Welsh Guards in there too. The Grenadier band at the French Guard Mount had a few odds and sods in too.

@tomcollins2036 The occasional musician from another band may be required to fill a space if someone suddenly goes sick or perhaps they swapped leave with someone from a different band resulting in people playing in different bands. However, recently the assignments have just taken place so there are a few people still waiting new uniform so are marching in their old badged uniforms until their new ones arrive.
I have such admiration for all tradition of the UK. 🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧

What a refreshing variety of music; no endlessly repeated ‘Scotland the Brave’ and ‘A Scottish Soldier’.
Applause for all the participants in this wonderful parade. Pride, dignity and style are all there. The band are superb, with the pipes adding that extra something special. What a great spectacle you have captured in this video, thank you for sharing 👍

@@AnnofWales21 Hello Ann, nice to speak with you and thank you for your kind answer. I watched the Entente Cordiale Ceremonies on YT as you did and yes, there were nice videos to see about this event. On the british side, we had a great ceremony because the King Guard uniforms please my eyes (they had again their scarlet tunics which are absolutely beautiful and elegant) and also the Band could demonstrate the wide range of its musician talents. On the french side, I was a bit disappointed by their band which was in fact no band at all as they had only a few bugles and drums. Well, in this particular matter, it is hard to beat the British as each of them is an accomplished performer. Keep well dear Ann and thank you again for your message.

First time seeing the Drum Major marching in changed arms of carrying his mace, as of modern foot drill in the British Army.
Hello, quite strange to see that. I don't think drill has changed, I either think the Drum Major had a small slip up, because from what I've read in the Drum Major Drill Manuals, Drum Majors aren't to do the 'Carry" with the Right Hand unless signaling a Left-Wheel, but clearly this Drum Major switched arms a few paces before initiating his Left-Wheel Signal. Quite interesting, the only time we see the Left Arm swing is during the Trail or State Walk. Quite interesting!
@@delvinrodriguez3341 Hi again Delvin😎 For the life of me I can’t spot this slip up but that’s probably a good thing😌 This is a new drum Major to me but I’ve done a bit of homework and think his name is Euan Gordon of the Scots Guards. I rather like his style, somewhat reminiscent of your favourite in that there is a stately air to it and quite imposing. Hope you are keeping well😊

It's around 5:08, Drum Major Euan Gordon changes his Staff from the left hand to the right, but instead of lifting his left arm to initiate his Left-Wheel Signal, he swings his left arm while carrying his staff on the right. A move that is never usually seen. Usually after the switching the Staff from left to right, one should immediately lift their left arm to start the Left-Wheel Signal. One isn't supposed to march a few paces while swinging the left arm. Hope this makes sense. The left arm should only swing uo and down in Drill movements like the Trail, or the State Walk. It was just rare sight to see. Well done on finding out who the Drum Major is, he's been Drum Major for around 6 months I believe.
@@delvinrodriguez3341 Some years ago at Trooping the colour the ensign, right at the end of the quick march past, dropped his right arm and held the colours with his left hand/arm for a minute or two, he said he got cramp and was forced to change over. Apparently no one noticed it at the time. This looks like he just anticipated and executed the first part of the movement too early.
It's was definitely a slip up and trust I know because I'm the drum major that was on parade.

Very good to see the SG Pipes and Drums. They’ve not been on Public Duties for years.
I wish, though, the Regimental Band would keep out of the 79th’s Farewell and The Crags. The combination is fine for Soldier’s Return and Hielan’ Laddie but leave the other two to the pipes.

"Black Sundays" are each Guards Regiment's annual memorial event where serving and retired members of the Regiment come together to remember their fallen. They march from Wellington Barracks to the Guards War Memorial on Horse Guards for the service, and march back afterwards.
All the Guards' regiments in the Household Division set aside a Sunday - colloquially known as their "Black Sunday" - to commemorate those of their regiment who have died in service. The event is organized through their respective regiments and regimental associations, which include former and serving members. Before the parade the attendees would have come together in the Guards' Chapel in Wellington Barracks for a short service, and then paraded, as documented here, to the Guards' memorial at Horse Guards' Parade for a brief remembrance ceremony and to lay a wreath. The association dictates the order of dress for its members, so any serving Scots Guards participating as members of the association were wearing the association's prescribed civilian dress, the same as the veterans who participated. In this case, no headdress, dark suits, brigade ties and medals. The regiment provided a good-sized detachment from F Company in home service dress and there was also representation from the 1st Battalion and G Company, the London Guards. It was a historic occasion for the regiment. Their royal colonel, HRH The Duke of Kent, the late Queen's former cousin, relinquished his role with the Scots Guards today after 50 years. (The Duke took the salute at the saluting base before the parade entered Wellington Barracks.) He is being succeeded as colonel by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
