In his memoirs my father-in-law recalled a bombing mission on the sub pens over Trondheim as a pilot of a Lancaster in RAAF 467 squadron. He wrote that they flew at night just above sea level for hours to avoid German radar. They were under strict orders to bomb only if the target was visible to prevent any Norwegian civilian casualties. A pathfinder screwed the mission, and they had to abort. Germans had laid smoke. They dropped their bombs at sea and made it back to the north of Scotland on fumes.
It was common practice for the lead aircraft in a formation to signal navigation and other messages by blinker light to the surrounding aircraft. So I'm pretty sure they had a pretty good idea of Crosby's intentions.
Ooh the landing on the farm at the end is crazy even with flak, fighter damage and hitting the cliff the B 17 looks not so seriously damage except for the engines.
The Luftwaffe aircraft that attacked them were not Ju-88's but instead were Me-110's. The Ju-88 had a single vertical stabilizer, not the two the Me-110 had, however, both were twin-engine aircraft. During the heat of the fight, it was not unusual for those involved to mistakenly identify aircraft of the enemy. Throughout the war, pilots and crews of both sides of the conflict misidentified opposing aircraft.
5:29 what exactly is a Messerschmidt Engine?! It is a Daimler Benz Engine, from a Messerschmidt plane. Also that wasnt a machine gun in the middle, it was a machine cannon.
You´re right - Mercedes Benz DB 601 A, E (E-Version, F-Version) and MB DB 605 AM, AS, D (G-Version, K-Version) . The Machine Gun in the "middle" had the designation MG 151/20 (starting with the Me Bf 109 F-2) .

OK, I like this series BUT too many scenes of the engines turning the wrong direction and in case of trouble, wrong feathering. YA, I know, picky, just saying.

thanks for the info sharing and the story
And of all those empty square kilometers out here... You really HAD to choose exactly my cucmber plantation for a landing strip?!
he HATRES cucumbers, especially Scottish ones!!
cucumber is tasty and healthy!
Both the Dora and Bruno (Bergen) pens are still present today
You can go bowling at Dora 1
seriously?

Good thing their waist-gunner called out that flak at 1:58 -- I don't think anybody had noticed it.
better safe then sorry!

So they where going for DORA 1 in TRONDHEIM
At St. Nazaire, the town itself vanished after heavy bombing, but the sub pens remain to this day.
Yes, I was to wndering what a heck is Trontheim ;-) Next there is Lundon, Ingland. ;-D

in reality the allied average bomb never fell within 5 miles of a target, and the gunners very rarely hit any German fighters.
Absolutely true
precise still had to be invented, altho the germans had their guided bombs
I believe those were Bf-110s and not JU-88s
They were. The error may have been done on purpose to show how misidentification can and did happen.
Twin engine intercept fighters yeah I’d just say “big fast things incoming”
The formation flying is shown much too close together than it was for real. Also, the turn should be 'at the IP' (Initial Point), not 'to the IP'.
thanks for the info :)
Wasn’t the tail wheel always down?
Just wondering
Thanks for sharing this
It does retract to reduce drag. The wheels all stuck out a bit on the B17s which may be why it seems like it was always down

Det er Trondheim.
This movie is insane. They launch a mission without dog fighters support. They just let the bombers go on its way.
bate...
I am glad that Brad Pitt is not in that picture
lol
He doesn't have airsickness on this mission.. "historically inaccurate"
I thought the safety pin is connected to the airframe, so when the bomb dropped, the safety pin is automatically unplugged. Anybody know about this ??
I believe the arming pins were actually removed in flight by the crews, after they had cleared the English coast.

Bf110 not ju88
Si vis pacem, para bellum!
carpe diem!
too bad the thousands of missions against the u-boat pens were all worthless - as determined by post-war study
True but in all fairness, they had to try something. Even if it didn't work the way it was intended to.
@@wolfu597 Yep. Even experiments that are considered a 'failure' can deliver valuable information/experience that is useful for the overall objective.
But it is ironic that it was air power and radar that destroyed the Uboats.
Special effects arent that good
brilliant work @rocksteadymilitaria541
