I saw the Diamond Dogs concert in Cleveland, and it was the most remarkable popular music show I ever attended. The set, props, the band, the dancers, and David were just unbelievable. It was a cabaret show on a Broadway set with the best rock musicians. However, I'll never understand why he did not plan ahead and make a concert film of Diamond Dogs for posterity. The Stones, Led Zeppelin and others had produced concert films. Why Bowie, a very smart guy, was remiss leaves me nonplused.
I was at that show in Cleveland too!!! So memorable!! Were you also at the Young Americans tour just a few months later? Also at Public Hall...Bowie only performed for 45 minutes and never came back for an encore. Thought there would be a riot!!!! We were PISSED!!!
@@RollaSu I had tickets to the show you mention. However, I had to give them up because I had an organic chemistry test a few days later at Ohio State. Nonetheless, I still regret not seeing Luther Vandross perform. The following "Thin White Duke" show was really good.
He also messed up a bit by not licensing his songs for inclusion in the movie VELVET GOLDMINE, but rumoor has it he was thinking of doing his own movie. But he never did.
Absolutely was Amazing, at the Public Hall …I remember he was first act to ever break the $7 barrier in C town and we were pissed until of course we saw the show which was one of shortest I ever saw and it just didn’t matter when they turned the lights on and it was over ..ever the Showman he left the stunned crowd wanting More !!
Brilliant , the whole of David Live is, my favorite Live Album of all time! The great thing is that all the versions are very different from the studio versions, also check out Strange Fascination of equally good quality!
How about that BASS LINE ladies and gentlemen? That would be none other than Herbie Flowers who authored the 70s most famous (Take a Walk on The Wild Side)...What a friggin band!!! Earl Slick on lead! Holy Accidental Sirens Batman!!!!!!!!
My Chemotherapy crew all picked a theme song. Tough choice between Motor City Madhouse or Panic in Detroit. "...a trickle of strangers were all that were left alive..." Sealed the deal. I will jump the silent cars sleeping at traffic lights in rock and roll heaven
No doubt this song is about the 1967 riots in Detroit. The city never recovered. Take a trip down Grand River from 8 Mile to Jefferson Ave. and take a good look. There has been "Panic in Detroit" for years. Great song, and prophetic....
Holy mackerel the legend Mick Ronson playing on this little amp he called, the pig. The guitar tone on Panic in Detroit was actually a smaller amp than “The Pig”. Interestingly enough, Mick still always sounded like Mick. He approached amps the same - whether he was using a small Fender amp or a full stack of Marshalls. The character changed a little, but his voice came through loud and clear.
@bluesam1959 thanks, me too listerned to it to death, was always my favourite version, guitar rift, and drum solo was what pulled me in, then i was a massive Bowie anyway, saw his last live gig at wembley arena, as it was then in 76. then when he came back with that serious moonlight tour back in 81 saw him perform at the MK bowl, way before his time. my brother who is no longer with us, had the oportunity to see bowie in 68 perfom only his guitar and also on the same night one Marc Bolen
Absolutely one of the greatest geniuses of all time.Talented beyond words.Oh,and he was married to one of the most beautiful models of all time!!!So what's that make you ?.
THE NOONWALK KIDDIES WAS ALWAYS DONE BY OWE BELOVED DAVID BOWIE...WE JUST ARE TO PROWN TO MENTION IT TO YOU ALL.. LOVE ON YA...GEMMA WATCH THE PAST AND LEARN WHAT YOU NEVER KNEW...
No, it was the next tour in 1974 when he released Young Americans, although they had probably already met when this was shot because Bowies clothes are changing again...towards the Young American look.....
Watch the UA-cam clip of Bowie on The Cher show from 1974. Most of it is pretty cheesy, but it's fun to watch. At one point Bowie does a pose which John Revolta ripped off 4 years later for Saturday Night Fever. I comment about it in the comments section too. A lot of artists ripped off Bowie because he was so multi-talented!
I asked and here it is panic in Detroit. I talked with some guy in LA a year or so ago and he said Detroit's still a huge mess as of 2015 and 20k for a mansion isn't a good deal because it's all full of worms. Buy into Detroit it's for land value. That's sort of the gist of this Bowie song. Los Angeles land sells for about 50 bucks per square foot good deal get it while you can. The County tax people want all your money. Panic in stinkin' Detroit.
chriswoods I agree with ARIZJOE... best live concert I've ever seen. From what i've heard there is complete film footage but it will probably never be released.
Sorry m8 to piss on your chips but this is deff from Diamond Dogs 1974 Tour part one. Both the audio and 8 mm film are from Diamond Dogs tour not the following Soul Tour that became known as Philly Dogs. Bowie Ditched the DD set just after the September LA shows that were used to film the great Cracked actor documentary for the BBC, also David Live was recorded on the Diamond Dogs tour part one July 74
True, but you can buy the MP3 of that performance. It's on my MP3 player and gets frequent play. I also bought the original 45 of PID from David Live back in the day, but unfortunately all of my 45s were taken from me....sigh....
Holy cow - I SO!!! totally agree -- that song hangs on the bass long. Perhaps David himself might have made the comment. Still agree it's a cool clip. Lead guitar is hot.
Somebody forgot to tell the bass player that the walking bass line during the chorus is the signature line and is critical to the song. Bummer. Still, really cool clip!
I like a young David Bowie against Conor McGregor any time, any place, any where! I believe the Young Bowie, an Englishman, would smash the Irish Mcgregor all the way to Detroit! Love the boxing.
So, lemme get this straight. Bowie spent all that money on the stage production and failed to have at least 1 reasonable camera and mixing board recording to preserve it for posterity? He must have bumped his head on the capsule............
See point taken you need to be more productive in life, and do things that will make a impact on this world. Not fussing that the audio is not in synch. Thats all im saying and from your reply i quess im right. good day.

They were recorded in some fashion, they just haven't been released.

Bass Player is Herbie Flowers! ( author of the opening bass line to Lou Reed's Take a walk on the wild side)
Brilliant , the whole of David Live is, my favorite Live Album of all time! The great thing is that all the versions are very different from the studio versions, also check out Strange Fascination of equally good quality!
Mike West the best live
How about that BASS LINE ladies and gentlemen? That would be none other than Herbie Flowers who authored the 70s most famous (Take a Walk on The Wild Side)...What a friggin band!!! Earl Slick on lead! Holy Accidental Sirens Batman!!!!!!!!
Defently in my top 5 shows and I've seen thousands!
My Chemotherapy crew all picked a theme song. Tough choice between Motor City Madhouse or Panic in Detroit. "...a trickle of strangers were all that were left alive..." Sealed the deal. I will jump the silent cars sleeping at traffic lights in rock and roll heaven
Amazing artist
This is the guy I remember. Flash-back to Fun times.
It was also the B side to Knock On Wood I think.
Great dancing in this clip
No doubt this song is about the 1967 riots in Detroit. The city never recovered. Take a trip down Grand River from 8 Mile to Jefferson Ave. and take a good look. There has been "Panic in Detroit" for years. Great song, and prophetic....
The Diamond Dogs Tour was said to be a sellout tour yet I see hardly anyone in the audiences. Heartbreaking!
It was a very succesfull tour
1:39 Bowie doing Michael Jackson dance move before MJ ever did it!
Mike Mack He actually did during Jackson 5 lol
He actually learned it from MJ when he visited Detroit!
The J5 were 3 rows ahead of me in 74 at the Universal Amphitheater. Mike was blown away like everyone else, but taking notes!
Brilliant.
Love to all.
We love him.
I was at this concert in Cobo Arena in Detroit it was awesome!
Holy mackerel the legend Mick Ronson playing on this little amp he called, the pig. The guitar tone on Panic in Detroit was actually a smaller amp than “The Pig”. Really great it of footage, thanks for sharing.

One of the best guitar solos ever 🎸
No, it was the next tour in 1974 when he released Young Americans, although they had probably already met when this was shot because Bowies clothes are changing again...towards the Young American look.....
What concert comes close none
1:35 OHN (oh hell no!!!) MICHAEL JACKSON DONE RIPPED OFF THE THIN WHITE DUKE.
jimmi3460 Yeah Mick Mack!

Outstanding. D' ya hear that intro, the saxo, and Dave's voice? Superlative!!!!!!!!!!

Panic in stinkin' Detroit.
I have a bootleg of this. Is it Earl Slick?
Ok, I'm only surmising. This WAS during his cocaine period...
beautiful clip ! such a pleasure.
Super 8 ?

THIS WASN'T THE DIAMOND DOGS TOUR. IT WAS THE NEXT ONE WHEN THEY RECORDED AN LP DAVID LIVE AT THE TOWER THEATER IN PHILADELPHIA
That was the Diamond Dogs tour.
True, but you can buy the MP3 of that performance. It's on my MP3 player and gets frequent play. I also bought the original 45 of PID from David Live back in the day, but unfortunately all of my 45s were taken from me....sigh....
its so bad (quality)it GOOD!...
WOWIE
Holy cow - I SO!!! totally agree -- that song hangs on the bass long. Perhaps David himself might have made the comment. Still agree it's a cool clip. Lead guitar is hot.
Can you name any other concert comes near 😮
gr8 footage, was it 73 or 74 ?, i have been looking for the live version which was on the b side of a single, back in 73, its not this one, but thanks
God is a featherweight!🧑🎤
Somebody forgot to tell the bass player that the walking bass line during the chorus is the signature line and is critical to the song. Bummer. Still, really cool clip!
Is this just out of synch or is the audio different from the video?
Share your knowledge David.
Brilliant
yes, but Panic in Detroit isn't on it!
Any clue about the lyrics?
Earl Slickwowwwww
Images of Lets Dance were flickering through the haze!
Can we sweep the trolls from this video?
Did they ever play it faster on that tour?
I like a young David Bowie against Conor McGregor any time, any place, any where! I believe the Young Bowie, an Englishman, would smash the Irish Mcgregor all the way to Detroit! Love the boxing.
With as much coke as he was on then,he just might
Anyone know if Luther Vandross was in the band at this time?
Well, I guess the better word is "stolen" (by someone I knew). Guy walked out of my house with my collection & never saw him or the 45s again...
If you can determine from this video that David's coked you're good!
So, lemme get this straight. Bowie spent all that money on the stage production and failed to have at least 1 reasonable camera and mixing board recording to preserve it for posterity? He must have bumped his head on the capsule............
I think this is a fan recording, though I could be wrong
He must have been hanging around iggy pop
Vocals don't really synch.
@Nedzorz1 hee hee hee
I could do without the horns and WITH the entire guitar solo.
he is a fu#$% gay!! i didn't know...
lyric by norman spinrad ...some cprrupt old excuse for music
Clearly the final verse with the English accent exaggerations are overdubbed and awful.
How sad. I now understand why you don't want this tour on tape.
See point taken you need to be more productive in life, and do things that will make a impact on this world. Not fussing that the audio is not in synch. Thats all im saying and from your reply i quess im right. good day.
Bowie was coked out here. Poor performance, he's done better...
lame version ...sounds like sinatra
