I just want to point out that while there's certainly truth to kids doing thoughtless things or not fully understanding situations, the evidence indicates they are not born selfish. Google "babies altruism" and you'll find that kindness starts /very/ early. We tend to think of babies as blank slates, and for some things they are, but there's plenty that comes pre-installed or at least primed to happen. And given what social creatures we are, shouldn't we expect altruism to be one of those?

Childhood innocence is an illusion caused by the awareness of our own faults that we develop as we get older. We weren’t necessarily better people when we were younger; we just thought more highly of our own actions because we didn’t know any better. Good people improve themselves when they realize their faults, while problematic and childish people don’t. Only seriously messed up people actually get worse as they get older. In short, kids are kinda terrible, but that’s expected so they get a pass.

Same, though not to a t.
I was kind and I tried to be nice to everyone I met, but the moment something seemed to threaten me, it became fight or flight. This one girl I knew sucked on her thumb for years, and my best efforts, from what I know now, practically turned into bullying. I hated that she did that, and it was completely disgusting to child me. It was the first semblance of hatred I ever really had. I kept trying to get her to stop in the only ways I knew how, but I just ended up kind of making fun of her. I don't remember anything after the time we both got sent home, but after that, I believe I avoided her like the plague.
And on another note, when my best friend left to make more friends... let's just say I thought he was replacing me. I really did have all the qualities of a bully back then if I wasn't so scared of getting in trouble. Not even the reprimanding, just the actual concept of getting in trouble.
But now, I'm probably one of the nicest people anyone could ever meet, and yet im constantly looking back on things I did even a few months ago and I say "I was a STUPID kid. Why would I do that? I never want to do anything like that again." Along with degrading myself for my stupidity.

Babies are born with pretty much complete innocence: they don't know right from wrong because they have no experience and very little ability to reason. As they get older they develop selfishness and (hopefully) empathy, but their default state is total self-interest, which can result in immoral behavior.

I have a deep secret I remember from childhood: I'm pretty sure I traumatized an injured baby rabbit. It was in a crate in the house because our cat injured it, so my parents were nursing it to health. (Spoiler: it recovered and was released.) But uhh, I was really curious about how it would react if I scared the shit out of it. I knew I shouldn't. BUT I HAD NO IMPULSE CONTROL! So I picked up the crate and tilted it this way and that, and watched it scramble to stay balanced. Then I realized I was being a super evil horror movie child and left it alone. And probably cried about it later lol. But STILL. I HAD NO REMORSE WHILE I DID THAT. WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME???

damn I did similar things to insects
On my town we had lion ants, that are not ants but look like a small bean with jaws and eat ants, I catched them and stab them with fishing hooks and thorns and THEN not satisfied I hung up them on a tree, a thorn-full tree that we called mezquite
After some time I felt guilty and make the chickens eat them, but if they didn't want them I opened their beaks to make them eat the insects, because I felt guilty of killing them with no purpose

That's just shit parenting/the beginning stages of sociopathy. Children _are_ innocent, for better or worse. They don't know to not be selfish, capricious and precocious. In the same vein, they also don't know not to be trusting, honest (sometimes brutally) and without prejudice. Parents punish the former and life punishes the latter, so like all thing it's a gray area as to whether you value that innocence or not.

Not so fun fact, empathy is a learned trait. One that we recognize the lack of at a certain age and teach to our offspirng, like expedited evolution through social/societal ideas. It's beneficial for our survival and so any parents worth their salt teach it to their kids.
