2:32 Wow! Those SDP40Fs are absolutely flying. Interesting to see a yellow E in the consist too, not sure what that was about since by then all of Amtrak’s E units had long been painted in Phase 1.
Yeah. That was just over 80 mph. I'm pretty sure they were limited to 70 mph because of their tendency to derail at the point between the trailing SDP40F and the baggage car, but maybe that's why that E-unit was 3rd out. So I guess that allowed for higher speeds since the weight of the extra locomotive stabilized the problem area between the 2nd SDP40F and the baggage car.
@@MiddleTennesseeRailProductions They weren’t limited to 70. Some eastern railroads limited them to 60 or so towards the end, but generally that just meant they were replaced with different power on those runs. They always did passenger speeds where they did run, and back in 1979 that meant 85+ on 79mph track.
This looks like an excursion to Sterling Colorado and back. 12:34 MP72 (US Hwy 6 bridge at Merino Colorado) on the Julesburg Sub. 13:30 at the Sterling Colorado Depot stop.
The Large 4-8-4 was never retired from active roster by UP and she's heads out of the Twilight Of Union Pacific Steam and she's kept going strong was Union Pacific 844 was been renumbered 8444 (1962-1989) 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
Which excursion was this? Because i think this was the excursion that was featured in the Eighty Four Forty Four documentary as well as the closing credits to Shining time Station.

I was surprised to see some SDP40F's going that fast in that one shot.
