  • Mote Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit, marine research organization based on City Island in Sarasota, Florida, with additional campuses in eastern Sarasota County, Boca Grande, Florida, and the Florida Keys.
The aquarium is the public outreach arm of the laboratory, displaying more than 100 marine species with a focus on species and ecosystems studied by staff scientists. The aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which accredits qualified facilities based on a rigorous application and inspection process focusing on animal care, conservation, and science, facilities, and more.
The aquarium opened in 1980 on City Island in Sarasota Bay to display sharks, manatees, sea turtles, seahorses, rays, skates, and invertebrates including cuttlefish, octopuses, sea jellies, anemones, and corals. Special exhibits have included "Otters and Their Waters" and "The Teeth Beneath: The Wild World of Gators, Crocs, and Caimans" that features animals found in the watershed (land that drains into the ocean and other waterbodies), including North American river otters, American alligators, and spectacled caimans. A special exhibit "Oh Baby! Life Cycles of the Seas" deals with marine courtship and reproduction and features the offspring of multiple species and their early-life survival challenges through an interactive game, a baby shark touch tank, and other features. The aquarium includes windows into working laboratories and interactive exhibits designed to make science accessible for all ages.
    Wild Bird Learning Center
Our unique Wild Bird Learning Center, which is essentially a living museum, offers fascinating educational displays featuring live birds that have been injured and treated, but are unable to be returned to the wild.
We are the only organization of our kind in the Sarasota County Green Business Partnership, and were recently awarded Gold Certification by the Florida Society for Ethical Ecotourism, because we practice what we preach!
    Birdwalk
Strolling along our Birdwalk, visitors compare and contrast the various types of diversification and adaptation that make each species unique, and also gain an insight into why each species has evolved specific features, such as beaks, legs, feathers, or feet, in order to survive in their respective natural habitats. Visitors also learn about the various environmental risks to birds, and how to help minimize them.
Our Birdwalk also serves a broader environmental education purpose. Our Native Plant initiative has filled our sanctuary with native plants and corresponding interpretive signage that explains the importance of native plants to the general environment and also highlights the specific inter-dependencies between plants and birds.

    Hey Tom!
Great video! I apologise for the late comment, school is in full swing with final exams coming up and i`ve been working a lot recently, but i managed to get in a few minutes of this video each day when possible, finally finished it today.
I really enjoyed this video Tom, very well laid out facility, and you showed it very well, i like how you`re allowing the camera time to focus on the signage, and getting a closer view if necessary, it`s the little things like that Tom that matter and make the video good, especially people like me who enjoy reading all of the signage and i don`t have to have my laptop like 2 inches away from my face to make out the signage like i`ve done in the past LOL!
Now for some time stamps my friend.
19:18: Another UA-camr i watch (Paul Cuffaro) has a peacock mantis shrimp as a pet Tom. He shows on camera when it`s feeding time and he`s very fun to watch get his dinner. They litteraly punch their food to death, look up how strong their punch is, you`ll be blown away, trust me! He`s one of my favourites to see on Paul`s channel, amongst all of the other animals!
21:21: These guys look very cool! Jellies as a whole have always fascinated me! Very interesting creatures...
22:54: What a mouth! You can just see his tongue, they use their tongue as a lure to attract prey. It looks like a little worm and fish are like oh a meal, yummy, then BAM! Dinner for Mr.Snapping Turtle! I think Snapping Turtles (especilly alligator snappers, some of the UA-cam channels i watch have amazing enclosures for them, hell, Kamp Kenan has ponds dedicted to many turtle species, including these) are so cool and prehistoric looking!
23:22: Pause the video at this time stamp, Tom. See the one axolotl hiding amogst the rocks? Also to correct your pronounciation of this species: AX-O-LOT-L, there you go :)!
    23:33: He`s hiding lol...
23:41: That title on the signage sounds like something you`d say Tom LOL!!
24:03: If you had not zoomed in Tom, i would not have noticed the Seahorse! He/she was very well comouflaged! A++ Mr./Mrs.Seahorse
27:10: Otters sure LOVE to play! It`s so much fun watching these guys play! I don`t know who`s having more fun, them playing or me enjoying watching them play...you`re telling me a gang of these creatures could gang up on a crocodile eh? That would be a sight to see, that`s for damn sure...
28:50: Looks like he`s in the middle of moulting, replacing his feathers in other words, see al the white, wispy feathers, Tom?
29:03: He`s keeping a close eye on you Tom lol...
29:26: These are very pretty birds eh Tom? You see them quite often in your Zoo Tours and apparently Aquarium Tours...
30:00: Are you into plants and gardening Tom? I would not have been able to name that just right off the bat lol, or is it the fact that your job involves plants, hmmmm....
30:04: I guess there was no signage for these little cuties, Tom?
33:10: The woodpecker is mocking you Tom, showing off his cool hairstyle, if he could talk, what do you think he would`ve said?
33:21: I see this guys everywhere i go in the summer EH, Tom. They`re not here in the winter, too cold for them, i enjoy seeing them and their babies during the summer though. My grandparents used to live across the road from a swamp and there was a pair of geese that cme every year to have goslings (baby geese), i called them Samantha and Sammy lol, i know, very creative lol. That swamp also had great blue Herons, sandhill cranes (one of only 2 cranes in Canada, the other being the whooping crane, which i`ve never seen in person but obviously, that could change), even swans (i believe they were either mute or trumpeter swans), moose, deer, bears, lynx also frquented the swamp for food and water, i have countless pictures of all the wildlife there, including a staredown with Bigfoot, no i` not joking Tom, i`ll tell you about it in my next comment on the next video (Key West Aquarium, this comment is long enough as it is).
Alright, wel that does it for me Tom! Great facility, looks like they do a lot of great conservation work, glad to see it! You showcased everything very well, as per ususal Tom!
PS`We had Wendy`s tonight, you already know i got the Baccinator, what else would i get? I got Coke and Poutine to go with it.
Looking forward to your reply Tom, if i`m lucky, i`l get it tonight, if not oh well.

I'm sorry for such a late reply Noah, I always enjoy reading your comments. The Mote Aquarium was a fantastic aquarium, the 2nd part was my favorite part. I really love the cute otters, they had a really cool habitat. Lots of fun watching them playing in the water and chasing each other around. The Seabirds was a total surprise, wasn't a plan to go there but I enjoyed it very much. I always appreciate the time stamps Noah, Lots of gorgeous birds. Now I want a Baccinator 😋

@@TomsRoadTrippin Hey man, we get busy, if i don`t get a reply within the first 1 or 2 days, i know it`s because you`re busy :). Yeah, otters are some of my favourites, so curious and they love to play! Of course, how are you going to know what i`m talking about without a time stamp? I`ve told my method for adding them as well, as i see fit while watching the video.
      Keep being awesome Tom.

Thanks Jonathan, the Save Our Seabirds Sanctuary was free to enter. I gave a donation which is the least I could do. It was a welcome addition to the aquarium.
