Unit 1: Role of Libraries in Society: This Unit provides an introduction to basic
concepts of society, its composition and the major transformations that society has
passed through in the last few centuries. This Unit enriches your knowledge and
understanding of what libraries are, why they are necessary, what purpose do they
serve in the society and how libraries function to serve persons with different needs and
purpose. Against this backdrop this Unit gives an overview of societal roles that libraries
play in the formal and non-formal education, life-long learning, cultural activities, recreation
and entertainment, etc. This Unit illustrates how libraries function to serve persons with
different needs and purposes. It also illustrates how libraries have become an integral
part of the society contributing to the growth and development of the country.
