My favorite moment in the draft was Newfoundland goaltender Evan Fitzpatrick being drafted by St. Louis 59th overall. I'm from Newfoundland and I was glad TWO Newfoundlanders (more than usual) go in the draft. I hope he becomes a good goalie. If anyone tries to argue, his profile might say he is from Nova Scotia (I think) but he moved away from the Island (NL) when he was FOURTEEN years old.
Hey Steve I just wanted to say thank you so much for making the greatest videos in the world and you make my day better every day u upload I went to the first fan meet up and watched the Montreal game with you Adam and Jesse any way you're my favourite you tuber in the world and you make the most entertaing videos on UA-cam you even inspired me to make my own leaf channel thank you so much
had to pause the video at a minute in because I literally said the exact same thing about the leafs drafting DeBrincat and the exact same 'because Chicago'. I'm a huge fan Steve and you've been a huge mentor for me as I plan to pursue a degree in sports media, thank you Steve and keep up the good work!! #DangleNavy
I'm going to agree with you on the statement regarding the Oilers. Yeah they drafted 4 defensemen (one of them being a 6'6 giant) and a goalie along with their four forwards, so we'll see how well these guys do. But yet, Jesse Puljujarvi was a surprise for me and I'm glad Edmonton picked him up
For what it's worth (not much) I've been beating the "Dubois will go 3rd over Puljujarvi" drum pretty much since January. A lot of that is due to getting the chance to see him play because HOLY BALLS can he play himself some stick-puck, but Columbus has traditionally loved picking from the Q: 20 picks in 17 drafts from the Q including 4 times in the first round. Those first rounders were Pascal LeClaire, Alexandre Picard, Jakub Voracek, and now Dubois. So maybe a mixed bag (esp. in how those players performed FOR Columbus), but they're going to love Dubois' versatility, he's comfortable and effective at all forward positions, and I don't expect any buyer's remorse over that pick.
Dubois is going to be an awesome player, but i do agree with the above comment...The Q is clearly the worst league in the CHL. I think Columbus ends up regretting this..Time will tell.
Dubois: 121 games, 84pts, +18, #1 center on one of the best first lines in hockey. Puljujarvi: 121 games, 33pts, -6, struggling to stay in the top 6 on a bad team. 🤷♂️ Circumstances are what they are in Edmonton, but Dubois > Puljujarvi all day every day.
how'd you like the addition of Kerby Rychel? I really loved the kid in Columbus/Cleveland. I feel like he was going to be playing on the Jackets all year next season. The return for a higher end prospect seemed a bit small to me. I'm betting you're going to love him in TO.
I think drafting JD Greenway and Joseph Woll were pretty good picks but yeah otherwise the leafs kind of went off the board and picked some guys I wasn't too impressed about.
Favorite moment? Auston freaking Matthews. Nothing even close. But another fun moment was the reaction to the Leafs draft past that point. A lot of people (including myself) thinking we had a clue what Hunter is thinking. Nope. Though it was hilarious watching people lose their minds at the Leafs saying "forget your rankings, we got our own." Hunter was brought in to do his thing at the NHL level and that's exactly what he's doing.
teehee. right? Like. leafs draft who? and who again? who one more time? i'm really fine with the people they drafted. I honestly remember this last year when people got all mad that we drafted people we had no idea who they were give or take 2 people - and almost every single player last year had some of the best hockey ever. rinse. repeat. (we hope).
Steve Dangle what are your thoughts on Cliff Pu drafted 2nd round by the Buffalo Sabers although he was suppose to be a 1st round draft pick around the 22 or 30 overall pick he was a memorial cup winner and i believe 2nd line center behind Mitch Marner
Konecny is a great player but we turned that pick into 2 picks. Those two picks were Travis Dermott and Jeremy Bracco. Sometimes quantity over quality works.... time will tell, but in the long run I think we win that trade off.
2023 Update: Matthews is going great for Toronto and scored 60 goals last year even tho Toronto still hasn’t made it out of the first round. Neither Pierre Luc Dubois nor Patrick Laine were happy in their cities so they were trade for each other. Laine seems to have found a home in Columbus while it looks like PLD is looking at leaving Winnipeg in free agency. Puljujarvi who everyone thought was the “steal of the draft” ended up being a bust and was traded to Carolina for essentially nothing. Olli Juolevi is another bust. Matthew Tkachuk had a 100 point season last year but didn’t want to resign in Calgary long term (sadness) so he was trade to Florida. Mikhail sergachev played 4 games for Montreal and then was trade to Tampa Bay for Jonathan Drouin. He (with Tampa) beat the Habs in five to win the cup. This draft ended up sucking for Canadian teams.
Steve, at first glance it seems as if the Leafs drafted mediocre players, but it goes way more into depth than that. Hunter and Co. have decided to take advantage of the deficiencies of the draft, drafting overage players who had a breakout year. Now to take this into example, let's use Nielsen. Last year, everyone thought he was a "meh" pick until this year, where he scored a lot of points and was a dman of the year. Huge difference from these guys, right? Not at all. Instead of waiting for a 17-18 year old to have a breakout season like Nielsen did, we took the kids who just had their breakout year. The best part is that many teams undervalue overagers so that's also what goes in favour for us. At the end of the day we'll how to wait to see how it pans out, but don't pass these guys off just because they're big. These are kids who just had a breakout year, and they show tons of skill whilst being big boys. If these guys pan out, the league will change their drafting strategies forever and will draft overagers with open arms. Be positive on these guys, trust in management because they are doing something that could be absolutely brilliant.
One more thing to add. When these guys start become good, they'll be cheap RFA players on our roster, which means that we'll have a third and fourth line of extremely cheap contracts while we are a cup contender. Chicago is a team that has done this, and look at where they ended up. The Leafs are trying to become the BlackHawks Steve, this is a brilliant way of doing so and will make sure that there's always a player to fill a spot when that time comes, as well as conserving cap space for those big aquisitions, ala Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook... We have Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, potentially Stamkos... This draft is one got the future, and is actually brilliant that our management actually thought of something like this, nobody saw it coming.
Paul DI TRANI Hunter and Dubas did a very unique thing this draft, something in which has never been done before. I believe in them, if you look at the list of recent overage draftees, many turn out to be really good players, the latest example is Andrew Shaw, who just signed a 6 year contract with the Habs. This isn't even super risky because we have an insane amount of picks next year as well, which I'm guessing will be used for the old fashioned small but skilled players as well. Sure it looks like the Leafs went off the board with some picks, but you have to realize that most of these mock drafts are made from people who can't get a job in the NHL, so it's not fair to go by their opinions. At the end of the day the projected list is the one that our scouts have, and if they feel like reaching out for a player they will do so if they think that he's good.
+Burnsy Wow I haven't even thought about that. Thanks for explaining it. This makes sense. Now Imo, there drafting grade should be A-. You even made ,e more optimistic for the leafs. Hopefully it works out. Adam brooks seems good. I like the goalie as well.
Nagoto Uzumaki Brooks will probably be on the Marlies next year now that Sam Carrick got let go. The best thing about these guys is that most of them are Marlies eligible, they can get used to North American ice right away and contribute. They're also saying that Woll has starter potential, which sounds pretty nice. I'm happy that they went for a mid round goalie this year, he can be a good piece for when we are cup contenders in 5ish years. I'd give the Leafs an A- now, but could be an A+ darkhorse in a few years.
As a Habs fan I also liked the Sergachev pick - if they were going to go Defense it was basically between him and Chychrun and I would have been fine with either - but dammit I really wanted them to go with Jost.
I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the leafs grabbing Rychel from Columbus! I feel it's a big move for the leafs and I think he will take a spot on the NHL roster from lepsic and/or Leivo. thoughts?
There's nothing to argue. It was a terrible move. They should've either A) Taken Puljujärvi then traded whatever right wingers they didn't want for current NHLers or picks since Puljujärvi is much better than any right wingers they have and is clearly the best player available B) traded down to pick number 4 or 5.
Teams that have success aren't built around wingers, they are a dime a dozen. That's partially why the Oilers never improve their spot in the standings. They use nearly every draft pick on the easiest position to develop, and had NO DEPTH down the middle before Draisaitl and McDavid. Saad and Atkinson are good wingers, and centres can also play wing if they need to. How often do you see a winger strive while playing as a centre? I know that people were surprised with Dubois being picked earlier, but I'm one of the few who defend that decision. You can never have too many centres, they naturally do more heavy lifting than wingers.
We'll see if it's a terrible move. But people don't give Dubois enough credit. 1) First time ever playing center and he wins about 50% of draws and played the position well 2) Put on 40 pounds of muscle in 2 years...so he is determined 3) Can play all forward positions. Can't get more versatile than that. If Columbus wanted a center, I think they got the best player. I doubt he will "replace" Johansen but he is definitely a piece of the puzzle.
Inappropriate comments. there is more to be said, Just because the majority of the internet and TV analysts thought Puljujarvi was the better player doesn't mean he was. Dubois is a force in all 3 zones, plays a tremendous game. When it comes to work ethic, determination, and down right skill, Dubois has the tools to be the better player and I firmly believe he will be.
Growing up in St. Louis, and being Keith Tkachuk's biggest fan, I'd hoped the Blues would trade up for the chance to draft Matthew. Not much to hope for, but I'm generally happy with how we did.
you mean Mikey Mcleod? a potential first line center who's the fastest player in the draft (draws comparisons to dylan larkin) with a solid 2 way game and can score
I was surprised when Ty Ronning went in the last round to NYR. He is such a highly skilled player for him to drop from a third round estimate to last round. If he turns out like his father the rest of the drafting world will feel stupid. Also what about Robert Reichel's kid, no one drafted him which is sad.
Didn't even talk about the American players record. Also, Mcavoy to Boston. Why to I feel like 75% of BC and BU players end up on the Bruins. Heck not just them pretty much all Mass schools. Isn't there a rumor that Jimmy Vesey is going to Boston?
Steve what do you think would happen to Bozak if Stamkos was to get signed? I would have a tough time paying a 4th line center around 4.2 million (I forget his exact contract), especially when Stammer's contract is added in. Do you think there is a market for him if he hit the trading block by himself or became part of a package deal? I know that Babcock is looking for experienced pros who can help the kids develop as professionals, and since Bozak has been there for a while maybe we could just finish out his contract? I would also love it if you gave your prediction on the Lupul predicament. Thanks.
I think getting Anderson and Matthews sparked his interest. I also think that if Detroit offered him 12 mill a year and Toronto offered him 9, he would make wayy more money over his lifetime for the simple reason he would have Gilmore, Clarke, and Sundin status. He would drown in endorsments and business opportunities.
Not to mention he would walk in as the captain and would ignite the birth of a dynasty for the biggest franchise in the league and one of the biggest in North American sport. Childhood dream. I'm telling you this guy isn't like other pros.
I'm really glad we didn't pick DeBrincat because I don't think I will ever not say BrinDeCat in my head (I'm not glad, I really wanted us to pick him :( )
hello 360p, my old friend. I've come to see you again, Because Pixels softly creeping. left its seeds while i was watching and the Pixel that was planted in my brain still remains. within the the video of 360...p. jokes a side great vid and opinion
It looks like he'll still be a good player- Steve Dangle on Pierre Luc Dubois: Um yeah I would consider a hattrick against the Leafs and a leader on the Blue Jackets, a good player.
The future top 6 of the Oilers are Hall-McDavid-Eberle Puljujarvi-NugentHopkins-Yakupov The average pick that they were selected at is 5th overall *cough*Dynasty*cough*
I personally think this is a bit like the 2006 NHL draft, Hopefully Matthews will be tons better than Johnson and remain a leaf but I think Dubois could be like Jonathan Toews, meaning he will be a stud and lead CBJ. I trust Leafs management in Drafting but like Grapes said, Would've been nice to have some Ontario boys drafted and playing for us instead they draft 3 Russians, a Swede and 2 Americans lol, Probably not getting Stamkos. Juolevi could be great but I think Canucks needed Dubois or Tkachuk more, Juolevi could either be really good or just average, kinda like Morgan Rielly IMO. Oilers got a steal, they have to use and develop him right though, They need to move out Nuge, Eberle and maybe Yakupov, build around Mcdavid, Puljujarvi and Draisaitl. Calgary did well at the draft, gonna be a gritty, dirty and skilled team, Still need a young goaltender as Elliott is good for now only.
(dont worry i did my research ahaha) Johnson played for the usndp in his draft year and tore up. Matthews played in a mens league with a jack adams winning coach. Matthews will be fine Korshkov played limited minutes in the K like normal rookies would. and he was putting up better numbers than denis guryanov did in his draft year. Grundstrom was ranked around 18th to 30th in the draft rankings and he fell to 57th. Woll is going to boston college next year with a departing thatcher demko meaning he'll develop greatley, Greenway is a steeeeeaaaaallll guys gonna be a beast top 4 dman he's such a good skater and has amazing hands (kinda reminds me of subban). I like the middleton pick he could be a top 6 dman like andrej sustr just alot more physical Rielly put up almost 40 points playing on the worst team in the NHL just imagine what he could have done if he didn't have to play with new teammate every game. he's deffinetly developing into a number 1 defenceman and I believe a 50-60+ season is coming very soon for him to be honest Matthews reminds me of a defensive minded evgeni malkin
Why the hell did Avalanche trade Holden for a fourth round pick when they need a better Defensive core but then they also go out and draft 2 forwards and in the 3rd get a mediocre Defensmen
i agree that its fishy that the leafs went all small and then all big and didnt pick up any consensus picks. going small 1 year and huge the next seems very extreme. also lets not get too hyped up about the whole "Small vs Big" and "Safe picks" and "slam dunk picks". the draft is a lottery from top to bottom. i hope they know what theyre doing
Sometimes I question why I defend my own fan base, who crapped on Lars Eller THE INSTANT the trade was announced! Damn, guys, can't you wait till he's at least played one game before you start giving him crap? Come on, man! I'm still gonna Rock the Red all the way to my grave, though.
"They traded P.K. Subban!... No that, didn't happen..."
Well....
In hindsight Jarmo Kekalainen's decision to take Pierre Luc Dubois over Jesse Puljujarvi at #3 looks like a genius move at the moment

Growing up in St. Louis, and being Keith Tkachuk's biggest fan, I'd hoped the Blues would trade up for the chance to draft Matthew. Not much to hope for, but I'm generally happy with how we did.
it did happen! they did trade subban
if youre a gm would you rather have logan brown or cody mcleod + 3rd?? obvi ill take brown every time
you mean Mikey Mcleod? a potential first line center who's the fastest player in the draft (draws comparisons to dylan larkin) with a solid 2 way game and can score
best part of the weekend: adam proposing to caprice :)
What were you saying about PK, Steve? He didn't get traded?
my favorite part was when the leafs traded Matthews and marner for kessel :-)
Great video stevy wonder lol
lol the subban trade just happened
The Leafs could draft the same type player year after year, just like the Oilers. That would be good right?
I'm a Penguins fan so I like how we got a goalie especially if Fleury is leaving.
No opinion on the Kerby Rychel acquisition?
I was surprised when Ty Ronning went in the last round to NYR. He is such a highly skilled player for him to drop from a third round estimate to last round. If he turns out like his father the rest of the drafting world will feel stupid. Also what about Robert Reichel's kid, no one drafted him which is sad.
STEVE.... good vid
Thanks.
I have a big feeling we are just hopeful and there's no way we get Stammer, but then again I said that last year about Babcock so you never know lol
5:27 DANGLE THE KING
steve you gotta stop preducting blockbuster trades in your draft recap videos
Once again dangle is wrong. Dubois has turned out waaaaaayyyyy better than puljujarvi.
Podcast/radio show tonight Steve? Or are we starting summer school - 1 a week?
Nope we have a show tonight
Thanks for being a gentleman and answering my question. I guess I should start reading the TWITTER feed before askin' -- Chagrined In Stratford.
I'm really glad we didn't pick DeBrincat because I don't think I will ever not say BrinDeCat in my head (I'm not glad, I really wanted us to pick him :( )
Look how he has turned out now
Who doesn't get rough credits?
Steve Dangle
Didn't even talk bout the Penguins 😒😒😒😒😒
hello 360p, my old friend. I've come to see you again, Because Pixels softly creeping. left its seeds while i was watching and the Pixel that was planted in my brain still remains. within the the video of 360...p. jokes a side great vid and opinion
The Blue Jackets knew what they were doing. They knew Dubois was better.
It looks like he'll still be a good player- Steve Dangle on Pierre Luc Dubois: Um yeah I would consider a hattrick against the Leafs and a leader on the Blue Jackets, a good player.
I would've liked the leafs to take a chance on Sean Day but .. whatever
I think it worked
i'm glad mtl got Shaw but god was i mad when i saw chicago use our pick on Debrincat
Shaw's contract is fine, his real value is on the pp. It's not like they went full on Girardi, that's a proper contract
What is you're guys opinions on kieffer bellows
Wow. That's a whole heck of a unload of information and opinion in a youtube video.
You forgot to yell (if the Bruins get Stamkos) Komarov vs Stamkos!
How can you get two 2nd rounders for Lars Eller?!
The future top 6 of the Oilers are
Hall-McDavid-Eberle
Puljujarvi-NugentHopkins-Yakupov
The average pick that they were selected at is 5th overall
*cough*Dynasty*cough*
Cough*no defense*cough. And it's quite pathetic that the average draft postion of the oiler's top 6 is 5th overall.
(dont worry i did my research ahaha)
Johnson played for the usndp in his draft year and tore up. Matthews played in a mens league with a jack adams winning coach. Matthews will be fine
Korshkov played limited minutes in the K like normal rookies would. and he was putting up better numbers than denis guryanov did in his draft year. I like the middleton pick he could be a top 6 dman like andrej sustr just alot more physical
Rielly put up almost 40 points playing on the worst team in the NHL just imagine what he could have done if he didn't have to play with new teammate every game. he's deffinetly developing into a number 1 defenceman and I believe a 50-60+ season is coming very soon for him
to be honest Matthews reminds me of a defensive minded evgeni malkin
Personal favorite moment was my friend Peter Thome being selected by Columbus.
Why the hell did Avalanche trade Holden for a fourth round pick when they need a better Defensive core but then they also go out and draft 2 forwards and in the 3rd get a mediocre Defensmen
Just imagine if Montreal traded PK! No no, you're right, that would be ridiculous.
Gabriel Harrison well.....
Steve what do you think of Pitt drafting another goalie?!
Hello I’m from the future the leafs make the playoffs
Thanks for not drafting Konecny. - Flyers fans everywhere
That Puljajarvi prediction didn't pan out. Sure glad the Jackets picked Dubois.
i agree that its fishy that the leafs went all small and then all big and didnt pick up any consensus picks. going small 1 year and huge the next seems very extreme.
also lets not get too hyped up about the whole "Small vs Big" and "Safe picks" and "slam dunk picks". the draft is a lottery from top to bottom. i hope they know what theyre doing
It makes sense for Columbus to take Dubois because they already have 2 very good LW prospects and they don't have a good Center prospect
Is there some reason GM's shy away from drafting players from their home country?
lmfao at the canucks line
why arent you talking about KERBY RYCHEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He said on Twitter that he forgot. Listen to his podcast that comes out today
Check his personal account!
i solved the leafs problem, does dave keon have any kids?
Beau Bennett for the 77th overall pick
Is this hockey talk or leafs talk channel?
I wanted Benson for the second round pick
