Hello Nina Schofield ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This song was performed at Vizovice Masters of Rock festival 2016, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band. As you noticed, this is a ballad, and it was composed for the 1999 solar eclipse.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. A very professional analysis never mind a reaction. Floor is known to sing very clearly no matter the genre. This song is better visually at the Tampere performance where they focus much more on Floor at the right times. I think your next song MUST be the “obligatory” Ghost Love Score from the Wacken 2013 show. It’s the world’s most reacted song on UA-cam and transcends most listeners no matter there preference in music genre
Not the typical song a reactor chooses to do as a first song of Nightwish. But you'll fall down the Nightwish rabbit hole soon enough.

Based on how you reacted to this, you will have lot of fun exploring this band. Tuomas (keyboards) is special talent as a composer. Fans call him Metal Mozart. Nightwish is without any shadow of a doubt one of the most talented bands ever.

Hi Nina. Really enjoyed your reaction. Nightwish's music is well worth exploring as it is very diverse, none of their songs are alike. There are epic and melodic songs, but they can also go really heavy on you and the next song could be very celtic sounding or even jazzy. You're right stating that you've only scratched the surface of what they can do. Floor Jansen, a vocal coach herself, can sing with an operatic approach, pop, rock and even grunting. She's a master at conveying emotion with her voice and her stage presence is unmistakable. The musicianship of the whole band is impressive. Their music is exceptionally well composed and arranged. The lyrics are very powerful and poetic, which leads to great storytelling.
Maybe the song 'Dead Boy's Poem' (live in Buenos Aires 2018) is a nice one to check out next. It's a beautiful song, which doesn't get too heavy, so you can ease into this kind of music. ua-cam.com/video/S8E3L7ggLMM/v-deo.html

Then I heard Ghost Love Score by Nightwish for the first time (that must be about 15 years ago now.) That group just blows you away. I hope you listen to more songs in the future.

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor Jansen is a beast in the vocals... you would like to hear Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. It's a masterpiece that deserves to be watched.
Gabriel's list is good start to Nightwish, but use your creativity and add something from Human::Nature album to it. Concentrate to live stuff. All Nightwish stuff is different but still has Tuomas'es signature (the keyboard player is the resident genius/wizard).

Yes, this was a single made for the 1999 eclipse. 222 Day of Light, it was 222 days from Jan1 to the eclipse on Aug 11. Their second album, Oceanborn, was reissued later that year with this song added. It was recorded with original lead singer Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen, who is the most operatic of the 3 female lead singers. Floor Jansen(Yan-sen) ,seen here, is the most versatile. The second singer, Anette Olzon, has more of a pop/rock style.
What else can they do? Just about anything. As you will come to find out, every song is different, and yes, you've only scratched the surface.

Really enjoyed this analysis/reaction, Everything regarding Nightwish songs is about details and movement, this is not just music, it is compositions. And a lot of emotions, Tuomas (keyboardist) is the master mind behind 95%of the songs, he is also called Metal Mozart.

Ive followed Nightwish for so many years now. Watching people's reaction to hearing them for the first time never gets old. The comment that I usually make is something along the lines of "that's what music is supposed to do to you when you hear it" . Over the hills and far away and Send me an Angel are two others you should listen to.
I love these reactions by someone who can actually break down the song and analyze the various parts. The fact that Nina can immediately replicate what is being played on the keyboard is amazing and shows a deep understanding of music.

Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 5 octaves (Eb2 to F5)
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.

Ghost Love Score live from Wacken in 2013 is a good next step where you can really hear Floor's versatility. Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Aries is a great song to see Floor and Nightwish conveying emotion (makes me tear up every time ). How's the Heart, acoustic from the Planet Rock session, is a more complicated piece where the acoustic setting let's you really hear what she can do with her voice and is just a beautiful song. Shoemaker, an ode to planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, is another vocally difficult song with an epic operatic ending , especially with the visual's from the lyric video. It’s always fun to see vocal coaches especially that have No idea what they are stumbling into with Floor & Nightwish, in a genre they clearly say they aren’t into. Floor can do everything, will take you on a ride, most never get off. She is the complete package of stage presence, close to perfect notes, held to unbelievable lengths. This song, written by Tuomas Holopainen, the Keyboardist, is dedicated to the solar eclipse that arose in the European sky in 1999. It has been used in several sinking ships movies, & videos ever sense. Think the movie was Britannic.

I'm glad you just dived in and and came up with this one. It's in my Nightwish top five. What I really like about Nightwish is indeed the storytelling, just as you mentioned. Most of their songs have a real story: This one is about a solar eclipse, they also have a tribute to Schoemaker, the guy who has a comet named after him, who NASA honored by transporting a bit of his ashes to the moon after his unfortunate death. And in Nightwishes early years they covered some songs too, also brilliant: The Phantom of the Opera, High Hopes and even Walking in the Air.
Nightwish got me several times off guard: The first time I heard Wishmaster. Two decades later when UA-cam introduced me to Nightwish with Floor, and then you find things like the tribute to Schoemaker and some of there early work with their covers. It's just an amazing band.
But honestly for me it is time to move on, I got a bit stuck on Nightwish. Too much exposure.

So much to listen and learn from the amazing Floor Jansen. Talking about her clarity of diction in this song, you would hardly guess she is Dutch, and can sing in many many languages just as clearly. She also has such an amazing stage presence she can take you on a journey with each song :) Sooooo glad you finally got here as I love your videos and your insights :)
The most beautiful Nightwish song. Simple but powerfully moving. Great to hear musicians that know how to hold back, not forcing anything, just letting the composition play itself.

Floor Jansen is the third Nightwish singer and by far the most versatile. She joined the band mid tour in late 2012 and had 48 hours to learn the complete setlist. You mentioned Tarja (96-05) and Anette (07-12) who were previous singers. Tarja quite operatic and Anette quite pop. This is an early song written for Tarja and only since Floor have they been able to perform everything in their catalogue. She is a vocal coach and has her own UA-cam channel where she sings covers and gives vocal tips and chats to fans. A great song to try would be Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013.
