  • This time on Films N That we are looking at Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver, a film about women getting along without the horrible men in their lives! Volver follows the lives of two sisters, Raimunda and Sole as they face family tragedies and unusual appearance of their long lost mother who they believed had died. Volver has a lot of heart and is ultimately a character driven story about family death and getting on with life.

I remember the first time i watched this movie, and how the moment the Mother is watching her daughter sing, and she feels seen and sits back hiding, crying, hoping not to be seen, it struck me how just simple good movie making is for some people. Before that, with no effects, no misleading, just right in the middle letting you fool yourself if you choose to believe if she is a ghost or not, or really it allows you to choose at what point you realize she is not a ghost, because the reveal is not the important thing for him, thats a thing hollywood cares about, not Pedro. Because up to that point the movie didnt really manipulated you, it just didnt show you any certainty, just damn good acting and planning. The real moment is when Penelope sees her while she sings, thats the real important crux and why it never needed to be established if she was or was not a real ghost, thats when the reveal builds up. Seriously, Penelope, the mother and the sister should have won oscars for the film.

Sorry but I dont think this is a good review. You completly forget how is life on different cultures and Almodovar is someone who really reflects female spanish women and culture, and I am not spanish but I understand this film is not working on normalized stablished instincts that american cinema works. And thar is something you totally didnt understand about the film. So, you cant make a good review of something you didnt even try to understand. I dont know if is a cultural wall or just you are not good on reviews
