Have you always thought that "Giant Step" by the great Coltrane was too difficult a song to accompany ?! Right! it is a difficult piece ... but it can also be accompanied in a simple way. In this Practice Along, we will only use the first 4 frets + open strings, and the chord tones. It is divided into 2 parts ... the first part "listen & repeat" and the second part will be the walking bass all in a row. We will do 2 Choruses and, the second Chorus, will have "the inversion of the notes", let me explain: if the first bar has B-D # Re-F #, we will invert the notes on each chord, so it will be D # - B and F # -D ... in this very simple way, we get a second bass line, without effort 😉

This exercise is good on so many levels:
    1) reading: I am a poor reader (like a lot of bass players!) so I just focus on reading the notes aloud while playing. The “repeat the line” as well as the speed increments makes his an amazing exercise
    2) Use of open strings: as an electric bass player I hardly ever use open strings, this is a great way to start using them to minimise hand movement, an other string to my bow!
    3) Harmonic knowledge: I do the exercise saying the first note of the chord (while playing) then I say the scale number of the note relative to the root of that chord. This gives me a strong sense of the harmony while learning the chord structure and understanding how this bass line goes from one chord to the other. This is also great for fretboard knowledge since there are a few inversions
    4) And of course, learning to memorise and play this particularly difficult standard
    Thank you Frederico!

This song reminds me or the fist quarantine. I sticked around that song. I love playing that progression super slow with a hip hop groove. No needs To go fast.lol

And just one more thing to add to my previous comment below, read the notes if you want to learn properly! not the tabs :-) i have played in many bands where I get a chart, never ever ever have I been given tabs
