It's more of a festival not a new year because it doesn't fall on any calendar... not the Gregorian calendar, not the solar calendar, not the Buddhist calendar, not even the lunar calendar that Hmong uses. Why? Because Hmong Americans in each city have their own new year every weekend starting from September to February. Today it's Hmong Wausau new year, tomorrow is Hmong Stockton new year, next week is Hmong Saint Paul new year. There's a Hmong Minneapolis new year followed by Hmong Saint Paul new year. Not only that but each clan also has their own new year on whatever date they pleases. Hmong Vang new year, Hmong Yang new year, etc separated by weeks and months. Hmong needs to have new year on 1 date every year like most countries. This is why I don't go to Hmong new years anymore. It has became meaningless. It has became a business where vendors, organizers, and clan presidents make money and gain attention. Everyone needs to stop calling these events/festivals "new years" because they aren't. Just because some people dress in traditional Hmong clothes and toss balls like a Hmong new year doesn't make it so because of the reasons above.
Hmong new year celebration is celebrated for 30 days. And this is america "USA" this isn't asia. Majority of people work and are busy Hmong New Year dates is based on availability and convenience and most importantly if the rental property will be available to rent for specific dates. Not every Hmong american can attend Hmong new year in Saint Paul MN therefore Hmong New Year is celebrated every weekend in different states so people can attend and enjoy for 30 days. The year is 2024 times has change the culture has been updated and made few changes. The time is not 1970s 1950s or even the 1800s. Get with the program! This is america 🇺🇸 stop being jealous of Hmong vendors and event holders because they make a little money from these events each year "trust me" they don't make that much profits with the time, money, effort they put into these events to make it happen for the Hmong american community. Hmong people in general doesn't have a country and a general system that's why Hmong new year doesn't fall on the gregorian, islamic, roman, jewish, persian, chinese etc. calendar. Buddhist calendar is not even recognized worldwide how can Hmong New Year be recognized or acknowledged or even on the gregorian calendar?
These two ladies represent Hmong well.
They spoke English so eloquently well minus the music evolution response but what an outstanding interview.
Let’s go Menisota
