So, while I agree with you that the episode ended abruptly, I got that it was about showing that Carmy realizes that he REALLY needs to talk to his mom and do whatever he needs to do on his end to heal & move on or reconcile with her. Keep in mind, he’s been back in Chicago for over a year atp in the show, and still has not spoken to her or seen her since the Thanksgiving dinner five years prior in the show. It’s a part of his arc to deal with the trauma he’s experienced. Another thing, and the show hasn’t been subtle with showing this, but I notice how some of the audience, based on what I’ve seen, hasn’t picked up on this, Carmy’s relationship with Claire triggers his familial trauma, especially with his mom. He’s had at least two panic attacks while with Claire, if you remember in S2: after the events of S2E5, and Carmy tells Syd & Marcus in S2E8 that he had a panic attack and was talking to Claire about the Thanksgiving dinner; then in S2E9, after he made dinner for Claire & they sleep together, he has another one that we actually see, and it’s ABOUT Claire, and then he tries to calm down with other thoughts of Claire, and his family telling him that Claire is a good thing, but it doesn’t work, then he sees his mom and how crazy she was at that dinner, then he calms down with thoughts of Sydney. Claire seems to remind him of his mom, and obviously not in a good way. So, it actually is significant to Carmy for him to be looking through those pictures, but the audience can be lost when visual storytelling is used at times. I personally liked this episode and season overall MUCH more on rewatch and while it was weird how slow things seem, I realized that episodes 4-5 & 7-10 take place over maybe 1.5 weeks, so if you think about it, not that much is going to happen, especially if you’re trying to realistically portray these characters’ lives.
