  • In this video we compare and discuss the similarities between Uechi-Ryu's Sanchin and Ngo Cho's Sam Chien. Coming from common backgrounds and from a similar time-frame in Southern China, I believe that these sister arts have much in common and practitioners of each can learn a great deal from each other.
Using footage of Ngo Cho instructor Joey Paman and contrasting with archival Footage of Master Kanei Uechi, we highlight the four principal energies found in each Kata known as Spit, Sink, Swallow, and Float.

Fou Chum Tun Tou. These are expression of force and at high levels, not just physical movements. It's all done "internally".

1:56 pulling hair, finger jab to the eyes. Old school was also about fighting dirty I guess.

It is more likely that uechi ryu is built upon elements drawn from a variety of disciplines and combined by Kanbun Uechi. Elements are probably from Tiger fist, Five ancestors fist, White crane and Southern praying mantis pluss others.

I don't know much about Five Ancestors or Southern Mantis, but I heard that White Eyebrow is influenced by Tiger Style, and they also have Spit, Sink, Swallow, and Float

The videos outdoors are Ngo Cho Southern Shaolin Kung-fu. It is a sister style to Uechi-ryu, born in Fukien Province at approximately the same time Kanbun Uechi was studying Kung-fu in China.

Uechi-ryu originally came from Fukien Province. Kanbun Uechi spent 10 years there around 1898 studying under Master Zhou Zehe. Kanbun was granted a license to teach and taught in China three years. Uechi-ryu is still very close to its Southern Shaolin roots.
