I don't think it's possible to overstate just how big a deal Stephen Chow was in Hong Kong in his prime: he starred in the five highest grossing movies of the 90s there and the two biggest of the 00s. There's no western equivalent to his box office dominance.

I adore this film. I worked in a movie rental place in the late aughts, and used to recommend this to anybody I thought might be receptive or who specifically asked for something "different." And when a person came back saying they loved it, I knew that was somebody I could deal with.

Oh wow, didn't expect to see a Plastic Man reference in this video, but since it's there, here's a little tidbit I always like to share about Plastic Man:
Plastic Man's powers extend far beyond simple shapeshifting. He has the ability to alter any cell in his body in any way he chooses, down to a molecular level. For reference, there's another famous DC character that has very similar powers.
    Doctor Manhattan.
    So consider that.

I don't think coolie is an insult here in India. I always saw it as a job description like cobbler or labourer.
Also the movie Coolie (the poster shown in the video) is quite infamous in India as the lead actor who was the biggest star at the time (think Arnold of the 80s/90s) was gravely injured while doing a stunt and was in intensive care for a few weeks

    • @ik107
      @ik107 8 місяців тому

Amitabh Bachchan was Bollywood’s Arnie, Pacino and Eddie Murphy rolled into one in the 80s. Absolute megastar. The guy was close to death from the injury he sustained in Coolie. It was massive news at the time. He did make a recovery and continued to star in movies for a few more years.

29:49 This bit is also inspired by a scene in a Bruce Lee movie called "Way of the Dragon." Bruce has to intimidate a white gangster boss and they don't speak the same language, so he does the same hand gestures that the woman does to convey the message to the boss.
That movie is most known for the final boss fight where Bruce Lee fights a heel, Chuck Norris.

So back in 2008, I was kind of a fuck up, and it was roughly 330 in the morning and I couldn’t sleep because I was going through withdrawals from opiates. I was probably on my third day and things weren’t getting better. This movie was on demand and I remember I liked it so much, and it took my mind off of what was going on, I actually fell asleep when it was over. Ever since then, it’s had a place in my heart. And I will I didn’t stay clean from that point on, I have been clean for nearly 10 years.

cheers for putting this up for free on youtube, my defining memory of kung fu hustle was seeing ads for it and being really hyped to see it in cinemas. me and my mate went to see it, his mom bought the tickets, but when we went to go into the screening the ticket attendant disputed our ages and refused us entry. (kung fu hustle is rated fifteen, nothing super offensive) but still denied. so we had our tickets changed to see batman begins. which was still good, but i would have preferrd seeing kung fu hustle.

I was waiting intently from your guys review on this once I saw the announcement cause this is a movie that I often rewatch if I do want something fun to watch on a hard day. First watched this as a kid in a public tv channel showing this but dubbed in Tagalog. Absolutely love this movie. The mix between violence and comedy is well balanced in my opinion and even the ropey CGI could be understood as a callback to bad special effects in old martial arts movie. Also, the Spanish Dub is bloody fantastic, with every character having a different accent from Spain and also different parts of the world. It shows the dubbers had a lot of fun dubbing, with idioms and expressions from each the respective accents (Sing has a neutral accent, but his best friend has a catalonian accent, the landlords have an andalusian accent and the beast has an italian accent, for example).

Stephen Chow is one of my favourites, a great actor and a great film maker. I love the way movies like Kung Fu Hustle don't feel constricted by genre and you get that mix of action, romance, comedy and darkness.
His best film for me is Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. Glad you guys mentioned how bad dubbing is for his films, Hong Kong movies are often dubbed for mainland China and so that makes the original language hard to find when they don't get big international releases like Kung Fu Hustle did, original language is the only way to see a movie, and hear the performance as well as see it.

13:06 That description pretty much sums up most of Stephen Chow's movies and his sense of humour in a nutshell. He's great at parody and slapstick.
I fully recommend any of his late 80s-90s movies. God of Cookery, Shaolin Soccer, Fight Back to School (2 is the best), Flirting Scholar, King of Beggars... honestly, just pick a random one, I went and checked UA-cam to remind myself of some funny clips and they just straight up have the full movies on here.
Random non-Stephen Chow recommendation. The Three Masters. A Korean comedy that has 2 guys, both called Mr. Kim, who run 2 competing martial arts schools on the same street. One runs a traditional Korean Taekkyon dojo while the other runs a Japanese Kendo dojo and is obsessed with all things Japanese... And then a 3rd Mr. Kim, who's into Chinese stuff moves onto the street and opens up a Kung-Fu dojo. Again, its on UA-cam in it's entirety.

Yuen Wah is also Bruce Lee's stunt double and performed Lee's iconic flip kick in Enter The Dragon. Other Chow movies you should watch: All For The Winner, Love On Delivery, King of Comedy and God of Cookery. The hand signs the Landlady did to the mob boss is a reference to Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon where he did the same thing to the mob boss. The Spider-Man clip you showed is in Mandarin, Kung Fu Hustle is in Cantonese.

Most characters in the movie do speak Cantonese, but Donut is one of the few spoke in Mandarin instead.
Also, the actor for Coolie is like the Asian Sean Bean, dies in every role I've seen him in.

23:55 is my favourite part of the film. I'm surprised you lads didn't like it. It comes out of nowhere, and it's glorious for that exact reason.

Even in OSW I can't escape Colm Meany! Seriously, he is the Irish Kevin Bacon.

10:25 V1, throwing his hat isn't the eternal war of "Dubs V Subs", which is really one-sided as the Dub group just keep TNA'ing it.

One of my favourites. The tailor with the rings is actually Chiu Chi-ling and is a legit hung gar practitioner (still alive and going strong). You can see him practicing Hung Gar with rings here ( ua-cam.com/video/-VQW55fdJxA/v-deo.html ). I think his effeminate character in the movie is an homage to the fact that hung gar is a soft/hard style.

I think you were too critical.
I really liked the butterfly metamorphosis scene, one of the few instances where the obscure symbolism made scene and I thought the looney tunes chasing scene was also good
