  • How to install a Wunderlich heated seat on a BMW R1200 GS - It's been pretty parky this last winter out on the bike and even with BMW's heated grips it can still get a bit chilly on long runs. Unfortunately BMW do not offer a heated seat option on the R1200GS but they are available via aftermarket suppliers. In this video I show you how I went about fitting a Wunderlich heated seat from Nippy Normans on my BMW R1200GS.
Many thanks to Nippy Normans for the supply of the seat, check em out at www.nippynorma...

Five years on, bought the seats from Nippy Normans - everything you'd expect for quality, style and function. Had a query that I addressed direct to Wunderlich. The response back was immediate, supportive and they resolved my query leaving me reassured and satisfied. First class service from start to finish 👍

I would personally get rid of that Scotch lock and solder the wires together. They are potentially a bit of a hazard, they are not waterproof and they can become loose over time and you can get shorts. A soldering iron would do the job just as quick and it is far more reliable.
Ideally you need some shrink tube as well...

I used to use them when adding things like spotlights and dukes of hazzard air horns on my ford capri's in the 80's.
They need to be crunched down with mole grips to ensure they puncture the cable properly and make a good connection. Don't overcrunch though. The clip on the side should still make a nice 'pop' as it clicks into place. Mine were blue. Can't recall having any issues with them failing but under a bonnet out of the elements you won't. I also used to smother them with a dollop of coppaslip grease to make sure nothing got in. It worked. They are a cheap and cheerful design and do the job. Solder is better of course.

Back in the old days, the 80s, whenever there was an electrical fault on the old bangers I had to get around in, it was always because of those things. I'm sure if done right they would be better but The Missenden Flyer is an Electronics Engineering graduate (Me too) , a drop of solder would be a breeze ;)

I bought a 1200gs with one of these already on it. I don’t ever use it and had a fitted sheepskin seat cover made for the riders seat so you can’t really feel it through the sheep skin anyway. Iv left it on as cba to fully remove the wiring in the loom etc and the cover is made to fit this specific seat

The CANBUS stays live for 20 seconds or after the ignition is turned off, relay was connected to a switched source so once the relay no longer senses power the seat is turned off.

you may already have figured this out but I just was installing the Wunderlich heated low seat and came across the same problem. I found that the switch housing has a small linear protrusion that is there to key into a cutout in the bracket. The brakes does't have that cutout so the end result is the switch housing puts pressure on the internal switch operation and does not allow it to work properly. The quick solution is to just shave the protrusion off and the switch will work properly. I am surprised that the unit I received still has a bracket without the cutout! I contacted Wunderlich and sent email with picture.

You may want to relocate that switch, I'm thinking about the road grime around that part of the bike, might not portend well for it. Have a look around there, chances are there are no electrics other than thoroughly insulated ones. As a reference point, have a look at the location of the pillion seat heater switch on the BMW K1200GT just to get you started. Good stuff though. Cheers!

The KTM Ergo heated seats (i.e. KTM power parts) are something like £450 for the pair I seem to recall, these seem very pricey in the extreme.
With the KTM ones you could have heated seats as well as a supply of deep heat/water bottle(s) and heated gloves/jacket for the same money.

Hi mate. Yeah heated seats are essential on that type of bike. My Triumph Tiger XCA had heated rider and pillion seats, two heat settings and a nice tactile little switch. Triumph 1 BMW 0 . If you’re on a long journey and it’s raining and chilly, a heated seat and grips can be the difference between a tolerable ride and absolute purgatory .
I some Wunderlich stuff on my old GSA and like you I found that they let themselves and their customers down by finishing what is a brilliant product with a cheap crappy thing like that switch and it’s fixings. No excuse for it.
I fitted some flooter driving lights to the GSA and the same problem, a Christmas cracker switch. I went down to my local auto and marine electrical store/workshop who fitted a brilliant Hella item, worked fantastic, looked the part, was illuminated as well. Come on Wunderlich ffs.👍🏻😆

Hi TMF, I see a few have suggested that you reposition the heated seat button, but I also wondered when you were having trouble with the button on fixing, could it be that the mount is on the wrong way round and if inserted from the other side would it then work properly? Just wonder if the hole has a different shape when viewed on the otherside, and if you do remove for re-locating might be worth a look.

Thanks for the help with this video. I've obviously mis-wired something. The seat heater works and the red light is on when the bike ignition is off. However, when I turn the ignition on, the seat heater will not turn on and the red light won't like up. I've double checked all the wiring and everything seems to match your video. Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Lovely seats, but was the fitting kit an Friday afternoon after thought? It might be worth seeing of taking a dremel to the switch mount will ease the pressure on the switch when it's in place...depends on the issue, but sounds like it's squeezing the switch too much. Having said that, when you pay that much, you'd expect a proper fitting kit and instructions! Those scotch locks work, but really don't like them and I'd rater splice in a cable using connectors, but I doubt it will give you trouble with some insulation around. The switch would annoy me and being able to switch the seats on separately would have been nice. One very important point tough, I'd fit an in line fuse , as close to the battery as possible. Easily done, cut the wire, add two spade connectors and buy an in line blade fuse holder. I'd also run the cable from the fuse through some plastic conduit....you can buy thin gauge stuff that is slit along it's length that you just slip the wire into and it springs shut. It'll protect the wire as it winds it's way to the relay, so no chance of inadvertent chaffing. For the cost of the seats, you'd think they would have this all thought out, as just adding literally a couple of quid to the parts list would have this all sorted. They do look good, but will they keep your cuppa warm when you are working in the garage?!?!?

I also bought one of these Wunderlich heated seats from Nippy Normans for my 2016 BMW GSA recently. I chose the Normal height seat because I wanted to retain the same seat height as standard. When I fitted the Wunderlich seat to my bike with the seat support in my usual High position I found two things. Firstly, there was a large unsightly gap between the front of the seat and the fuel tank. This gap disappears with the seat support in its Low position. Secondly it was significantly lower than the standard seat. I complained to Nippy Normans who checked my order and confirmed that I had received a Normal height seat and not the Low version as I suspected. I see that there is now a comment on the Nippy Normans website page which states that the Wunderlich seat is in fact 20mm lower than the normal BMW seat when fitted to the GSA. In fairness to Nippy Normans, they immediately agreed to take the seat back and refunded the payment

you might have continuity on that earth connection but you will have a high resistance by putting the ring terminals on top of the plastic. This will cause a lot of heat and a possible fire hazard you will need to put the ring terminals directly onto the frame and did that battery positive have a fuse in it close as possible to the battery. Yet again another fire hazard. P.S I work as an auto electrician in the bus industry so please check these points out and also scotch lock connecters are frowned upon as they corroded if in any damp area. Hope this helps Richard.

From this I suspect you won’t be going for a new GS with the TFT screen and hey why should you as yours is a very tidy machine and with the added luxury of the new go faster Carlos Fandango seats you will be good for many hours in the saddle. Re the power staying on to the seats a couple of friends of mine have had the same issue as you, the only thing I would be careful if is that most BMW’s now run a canbus system and chomping into wires can cost a small fortune.

I'd always disconnect the battery when making additions to the loom and I certainly wouldn't use a scotch lock. For a 1000 pounds I'd expect a plug and play loom extension.
And using crimp on ring terminals is bad enough, yet TMF has earthed the heated seats by putting the terminals on top of plastic, just relying on the threads to make the earth return. Why oh why did you not take the earth terminals to the battery?

You need to fix the switches in the 'dashboard' panels for a solid location and better waterproofing. Just extend the cables using shrink wrap if necessary and you can power the relay by splicing into the accessory power socket in the dashboard area. It's also far less expensive to buy a Heat Demon on Ebay and unstable the seat cover, install the Heat Demon pad on the foam and use a power stapler to reinstall the cover. You'll save about £850...!

Thanks for another great video! If I had tried it, UA-cam would have censored it due to "coarse language" as I tried to figure out the wire splicing and the switch. I ride all year, too (central California; down to around 25 degrees F) and was considering a similar solution. That switch would bug me, and I question whether the lack of heating level adjustment would mean you are constantly having to turn it on and off. I will look forward to a future update after you've had a chance to use it awhile.

Keep up the good Vids TMF (Nearly at 60K) I for one enjoy them very much. However, every time I look at your reviews whether bikes, gear or how to's I end up doing the research on the product especially the bikes!
Then I start thinking that could / might suit me better or why didn't I even consider that???..........Kerching, Kerching kerching!! Triumph T120 Black bought
Now I'm also looking at BMW R Nine Ts and 310 / KTM 390 for city riding.
I was an avid sports bike man but as you mention frequently the power can't really be used on the crowded UK roads and even if you do there ALWAYS risk.

Good video, bonny lad, will save me a grand, cos no way am I sure about that scotchlock, and, frankly, the switch arrangement looks amazingly cheap and nasty for the money. Is it still turning round when you press it on the go? That would frustrate the bejaysus out of me. Added to that, like many, the last place I reckon I need any more heat is round the gonads - Betty Swollocks and I are very well acquainted. A good ol' pair of Rukka goretex strides and my 'nads are at the perfect temp anyway. Thanks for the heads up!

Nice clear video, looks easy enough to install. Do you need to connect the pillion seat up separately, or can you link it to the riders seat?. Must say if I was paying that much for the seat I would want a switch that worked when snapped into place. Cheers.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 років тому

Yeah that switch is a bit pants - I've been in touch with Nippy Normans and they are getting me a replacement. ...and the pillion seat is connected up separately (but in exactly the same way)...

Wow. Now im old and its nice to see the old spade connectors are still around. I would suggest (with respect) some vasiline in there as they have a habit of being a bit dodgy with vibration and potential water ingress over time. Awesome video as always. A cooling version would good for oz 😁😂👍

Seat looks great. Not that surprised with the price, Touratech seat for my Crosstourer was over £400 and that only gets heated when the sun beats down on it. That switch though, thats rubbish and would pi55 me right off for that money. Have they never installed one themselves to check it all works properly?

I also agree with other more competent among the comments, click lock connector should be replaced as not realy fit for the vibration of the bike.

Heated seats FTW, the factory ones on the KTM are superb and have allowed me to keep riding in the recent snow - well those and the O/R ability of the KTM likely plays some part in it too. ;)
The autoclutch I recently had fitted has been amazing in the crappy conditions too - If you can find one for the BMW maybe you can review one of those too TMF, on and also on some light O/R like you did with the Triumph etc?
Oh and I imagine the W is pronounced like the English V and means "whimsical, strange" in German apparently, i.e. "a strange kind of wonderful". ;)
Oh and "liquid tape" is fantastic to cover the wires back up when you are done.

Great vid as usual TMF, ive just taken a look at the Touratech heated seat, £606 for the main seat, but, it has an intergrated button on the side of the seat it self, which has two setting, so no daft button to mount somewhere else. It looks like theres more to it than the Wunderlich.

Great vid as ever. I've been considering getting these seats after having heated ones on my Triumph Explorer. I may just go for the riders seat (the mrs. will have to suffer!!). Is is me or is it fairly typical that jobs on bikes are never as straight forward as they seem? Wunderlich products are good (my bikes adorned with them) but the instructions are rubbish and that switch is poor when you have spent all that money. Just a thought (unless someone has already mentioned it) what a about a washer to raise the switch proud of the holder? Well having just had my holiday to Lanzarote cancelled due to the weather last week, I do have some spare cash lying around!! Just better not tell the Mrs, she wants to put it towards some new curtains!!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 років тому +1

Yes I entirely agree, the simple jobs never turn out to be! I defo need to have a rethink on the switch and I may yet plumb the whole thing into my Hex EZ-Can and lose the red connector...brilliant having a warm bum though, and the Wunderlich seat looks good IMO...
