I’ve been a cyclist 50 years plus. I eat what I want when I want. My lab work has no issues. I turn 80 in 3 months. Exercise and exercise hard. Get that heart rate to work it’s a muscle. Treat it like one.

DHEA helps produce other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. Natural DHEA levels peak in early adulthood and then slowly fall as you age. Hope that helps.
I am in my mid 60's, I retired 7 months ago and I started exercising regularly, starting with walking and compound weight lifting. The first few months were hard and I didn't see much improvement. However, after 6 months my once flaccid biceps are back to being toned and strong. I have recently started some sprinting and it's going well, and I love the feeling of running again. I always add intensity to all my exercises very slowly to give my body time to adapt. I'm playing pickleball, golfing, and doing some exercise every day, and the weight is coming off. I'd encourage everyone to get out there and be active, you are more resilient than you think.
The key is getting away from stress. Until then… good luck. Work can be stressful, hated, toxic, drama, lose sleep, etc. High cortisol and little sleep simply will not allow one to lose weight. Period. Cortisol competes with estrogen in menopausal women and guess which one wins?

I just went meat heavy keto. With lots of bacon and red meat and some cheese. Off my meds and slowly losing my fat. Muscles coming back. Brain fog gone, diabetes gone, blood pressure problems gone. Ditch grains, vegetable oils and all sugars . Some fasting helps .
I go fat heavy and get the same benefits. Meat+veggies+lots of fats. I like fasting 2-3 days a week because it turns my brain into overdrive and I get some edge. Plus I don't have to worry about lunch at work.
I am a post menopausal woman, I lift weights and do many of the compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, overhead press etc, I am stronger with better health and body composition than when I was 20, back then I was living on salads, crash dieting and carbs. Now I aim for 2 gr of animal based protein per kilo of bodyweight! My recent test showed excellent health, Dr said I was better than 98% of the population and do not need to go back for tests for another two years. Other women my age are already frail and on meds, living on oatmeal and other high carb rubbish!

Food for you!! I am 72 and had been a lifelong avid hiker, horsewoman, cyclist & amateur triathlete (in my early 60s). Was in a motorcycle wreck when I was 64 . Lots of broken bones but still ER doc said if I hadn't been in great shape I would have been much worse. I still work out but not like I did but not giving up. That's a death sentence .
As a 70 year old, I've been on low carb for about 20 years, total, maybe 5+ years of that "keto-adjacent", the past year, carnivore-ish 😅. I’m 64. Play tennis every day. I train at CrossFit 5 days a week. Plus I go to the gym and do suplemental training to CrossFit 5 days a week. Eat a low carb, low PUFA, high protein diet. Body fat 12%, weight 210 with a height of 6’3”. People say I look amazing. But besides all this hard training, I lost 10% of max strength in major lift (squat, front squat, bench press, clean and jerk, snatch - no change on dead lift) Bottom line, aging taxes your muscles no matter how hard you work and train. But I won’t quit. In fact I am planning to move more the older I get. Still enjoining big time life
Have you tried taking more extra rest days between strength training days,I remember reading somewhere that people over 50 take up to 96hours to recover from a strength training session 😉

Very inspiring. I'm 65, keto-vegetarian, OMAD, and I go to the gym 4x a week; but I could eat more eggs, for sure; and above all, I HAVE TO get on with sprints/HIIT. I was convinced a month ago by another video I saw, and I went sprinting two montings and I felt so much better, but then I stopped doing it out of laziness. Another thing is 3-day fasts: I do them, but too seldom. Okay, where are my running shoes? ...
I fast daily at least 18 hours, avoid high carb foods, bread,rice, pasta, wine, these only occasional. I walk 2 hours daily, hiking weekend, swimming 4 days a week. Am pretty OK with a stable BMI 18.5 at 70. Eat less and moving a lot, it's the keys that's very effective for most people. I never experienced any major issues during menaupose as most women do, no insomnia, no mood swings, maybe a bit of anxiety sometimes but overall I went through it smoothly. Could be because I have a very active lifestyle since very young age till now.
I think you are correct. I went through menopause quite easily. Some hot flashes for a couple of years and fatigue. But those happened when I indulged in sweets. When I stick to a low carb diet I feel fine. However I have been in a physically demanding job since my 40s. My choice to help myself get fit. My sisters who are in lower activity jobs have had a much harder time with menopause.

I try to explain this stuff to my friends & family, and look at me like I have nine heads. It saddens me b/c they all have major health issues. Some are literally on deaths door with zero quality of life. Yet they continue to eat garbage and just sit... doing nothing.
I hear you. It is really hard to watch. The older you get the quicker things catch up. When you live that way it is way faster, and it opens the door to health problems that shouldn't exist.
Love your research and enthusiasm for fitness, I turn 75 in less than a month and have been in and out of the Health Club business since 1971, I first lifted weights in 1958 when I got a free 1 month membership to the Health Club that opened up around the corner of my house. My normal mode of training is one work set to failure with an intensity level of 17-19 on the 20 scale (most trainees hover at or below 15 on their work sets) with the rep ranges varying per workout day. I lift at a major nationwide gym and I lift heavier that the average well trained 25 year old and with much more intensity, I tell those who approach me excited by my strength and condition that it's not that much about what you do but to 'JUST KEEP IT UP'.
I’m a 55 year old woman and do not want to look like I was in my 20s as you said at the beginning of the video. I want to be as healthy as I can by exercising and eating properly, and age gracefully. Just wanted to point that out as I’m sure most women in my age bracket feel the same way. Thanks.

With all respect; I do not beleive any of this.I am 77,i am 6 feet tall,weight 168 lbs.I am very active with at least 200 km weekly road bike ride,run at least 50 km x month plus gym and swim weekly. I do not have any problem with fat around my mid section. I eat about anything,less soft drink and process food. Here in Italy we have the optional in getting good food,i make use of a lot fresh vegetale and fruit.Allmost no red meat,little bit more white meat and little bit high quality cheese. Never had any surgery,i am not using any medication.
Well u are training your muscles ....on the bike....that's resistance training....and cardio... And yes....less protein is better....and your country has so many people over 105, 110. ...your diet and lifestyle.. is something we cannot have in the USA.
loved this video, I am 51M and super fit, run/ride/swim/wind surf. No sugar, no seed oils, high protein, high fat (tallow, butter and olive oil) no shit for years and I am fitter both cardio and strength as most of the 30 year olds i race against in windsurfing. People do not realise how hard I train my HIIT workouts are 25km ride, 5km and 2 km swim.I do this 3 time a week in the morning and weight train 3 days a week. I need to train twice as hard as i did when I was 30.
It was simple for me. In spite of being an endurance athlete all of my life my cholesterol and blood pressure went up quite a bit due to poor diet. Well, being a focused (somewhat obsessive) I decided to make a change. Although I was not at all fat, I lost 15 pounds from 165 to 150 at 5'9" I feel great and am 67 and still can do a fast time trial with a very bad knee
I've been trying to deal with physical disabilities caused by extensive Osteoarthritis, bilateral sciatica, neuropathy, Fibromyalgia, and recently I had a heart attack. During my hospital stay tests confirmed that I have no blockages nor build-up of cholesterol in my arteries however, I have a mildly leaking valve and have been diagnosed with diastolic, congestive heart failure from years of uncontrolled blood pressure and stress. I lost my husband in 2020 to suicide and have been in a downward sprial with my weight and health ever since! Before he died I had started the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting and was losing weight rapidly and all seemed well until I started experiencing various episodes of severe vertigo. My doctor advised me to "stop the keto diet and fasting immediately or risk serious health complications"! I have been advised to loose weight and work on starting a "healthy lifestyle" but have been given no advise as to how to achieve that goal with no information on diet or exercise that I can / should do! My primary doctor advised "moderate exercise to avoid causing another heart attack and /or further damage to my already arthric damaged hips, knees and also sciatica. Can intermittent dieting be adapted in such a way as to avoid low blood sugar and prevent medical issues? Are there high intensity exercises and /or weight lifting that can be adapted safely into an exercise program to avoid problems with my heart and previously damaged joints? BTW, I am 54 yrs old, am officially in menopause (no period for a bit over a year), and my blood tests confirm that I am currently pre-diabetic. I am told that my life expectancy lies somewhere between 5 and 10 yrs!... I have a lot to live for, including 2 grandchildren ages 3 and newborn! Please help?
I am so very sorry for your loss……Your dr was wrong about keto. That truly is the proper human diet. The vertigo you experienced was either from or combined with menopause symptoms and or electrolyte imbalance. I was dealing with the exact same thing when I first started. Going through peri menopause I decided to try keto. It’s amazing and works. Being a newbie though I never learned about getting enough salt. And to top it off I had anxiety/bouts of vertigo as a symptom from menopause. I bought lmnt electrolyte packets and started over salting my food and taking magnesium at night and before long, maybe three months, all menopause symptoms went away, even vertigo! I am now post menopause, 5 years keto (except for the last year I slipped up quite a bit, but back to it) and I kept all but 5lbs of weight off….30lbs down. Getting strict again. Can’t take hrt but just started Dhea 5mg slow to begin, because i have no hormones left. Hoping that and really watching my food gets me to my goal…good luck to you. Keto will not harm you, it can heal you, find a new dr! ❤

I walk up and down a .2 mile hill 15 times about 5X a week. I get Hawaiian sunshine at the same time and while listening to audio like yours!🤗
Fear of falling is huge. Happened to my father in law. His BP meds were overprescribed which lead to several falls. His fitness plummeted as he now shuffles slowly and in the last few years only walks with a walking frame. There are things you can do to prevent falls. Stretching and mobility is key as are simple balancing exercises. Posture is important and also foot health and eyesight. Mismatched eyes due to delay in second eye cataract surgery causes falls and walking insecurity.
If the doctors.prescribed a low carb diet to reduce insulin resistance at the core of high blood pressure vs straight to meds... what a world that would be...
Exercise exercise exercise. Move to increase your heart rate. Keep doing it because it gets easier the more you move. More exercise naturally suppresses your appetite and has an amazing anti-inflammatory effect. Stay motivated by avoiding dull drudgery workouts like treadmills. Walk outside at a brisk pace. Get a bike and ride trails. Ride off-road because drivers don’t respect cyclists. Get a mountain bike and ride technically challenging trails to improve your riding skills. Do the uphill climbs to get your heart rate up, then ride down the other side and drink up that sweet sweet endorphin/adrenaline cocktail. Crank back up to the top and do it again. Do this for 6 months then get on the scale and see what just happened.
I lost a lot of weight and the hormone I focused on helping to metabolize was Cortisol. I supplemented with Ashwaghanda! This video reminded me of that behavior and I will be re introducing that supplement once again thanks to your highlight of this!
I used to take ashwaghanda and I bought it specifically for that purpose: to lower my cortisol. I could tell the difference when I started using it. I slept much better, and had more energy in the day. I was more focused. Now I do fasting and notice that calming affect that ashwaghanda has. I need to start incorporating weight training and ashwaghanda back into my routine again. When the cortisol is high for too long, the body doesn't feel safe enough to lose weight.
@@Penelope416 that is a good interpretation. I fast but sometimes reintroduce carb dominant foods again, like liquor and pierogies 🤪 so my weight has been stuck! I want to test an introduction of ashwaghanda as my next lifestyle change before switching into full keto again. Because, I run but I am not seeing results yet, albeit only one month but I want to know if kicking cortisol will help!
@@xrystalskyes2838 I think we're all trying to figure out this weighloss thing. If you're a female, then It could be different reasons why we don't lose. Being in a calorie deficit is the first thing but NOT the only thing for women. If it is a hormonal issue, then that could stall weightloss. I just learned about how women should be eating around our monthly cycle to keep our progesterone high. When progesterone is high, cortisol is typically low. As women we need enough glucose in our body to produce the progesterone in our ovaries (this is typically the week before our period). So it's not that women cannot do Keto, it just that we have to adjust it for our monthly cycle. Mindy Pelz goes into more about this.

Excellent info! Why aren’t doctors addressing decreasing hormones? After my surgical menopause, my GYN told me not to let the hysterectomy be an excuse for putting on weight, yet it happened even while I was exercising. 🙄 I’ve recently added IF with exercise.
I totally agree that older people need to perform resistance training. We move our skeleton by controlling muscles. Sitting on a chair and performing biceps curl is not enough. We need to work on lower body, too (squat and etc.).

My wife is premenapausal and I am 62 but both fit and eat healthy , I do resistance training , combatives and surf , she does exercise and now adding weight training , a change in diet , more walking .. Mike, I'd like to add that if one puts a high resistance on the elliptical machine and then uses it to failure is also a good idea. Elliptical does use compound movement.

Please be careful with those recommended doses for DHEA. 10mg for a woman in her 40s would give me an anxiety attack and keep me up all night. It’s powerful. I can only tolerate 1/2-1 Mg of DHEA!

If sprinting, HIIT training, etc, is hard on a 20-30 year old body, why is this being recommended for someone in their 50s+? I'm referring to recovery. I also heard 2-3 times a week for this. And I couldn't care less about what some studies say. Seriously?
I do that also as a movement coach. Teaching elder individuals quadrupedal crawling is a blast. Once they get going they usually enjoy it, and once they feel it helping them walk and move better they love it.
At 73, almost seven months of time restricted eating, within a six hour window. And high-intensity exercise: three-times-a-week doing wind sprints, skip roping, weight lifting has resulted in a fifteen pound loss. Now, I have to find a way to tighten up excess skin around my former love handles and belly front so my eight pack is more defined!
Sorry to advise you that that loose skin will not 'tighten up', that is an age related issue. I lost over 50 pounds 2 years ago at your age (I'll be 75 in less than a month) and because I lost some muscle and all the fat on my biceps I have wrinkly skin in that area, I lost fat on my waist and I have empty fat sacks like you. Naively in my earlier decades I thought at 50 gardening, walking, yoga, house chores enough 😂 thanks to internet/media I have had a constant rethinking and a positive change. Geezes though type 2 fibres are tough but rewarding.🏋♀️
Just know that depending on your genetics dhea may not work the way you hope. I had a doctor recommend it and it only went to increasing my estrogen- every estrogen related pms symptom became worse for me - but I have genetics pre-disposing me to estrogen excess. And yes I avoid environmental estrogens.
Hi Buddy, I've been following your channel for a while now and I've now subscribed, I like your energy and your philosophy on diet, exercise, resistance training and supplementation, I,m 60 years old and highly fit, I run & ride a bike, also I do resistance training and fasting, I clearly understand your point about getting enough protein, luckily I can eat like a horse, I believe too many people think when they get older they must do less exercise or completely stop, I believe we should be doing more activity as we get older, also age is just a number, it's all about your mindset, also thanks for the tip on DHEA, I will be going to the clinic to get tested and if low will definitely give them a try.
People give up @ 50: decay starts at 50... That's the age you should start working on your body. Didn't change much, just biking every day and swimming as much as possible (in summer 10 miles a week). Lost 15 lbs without changing my diet, but ok, don't eat a lot of sugar, never did. BMI now 22.4. almost no fat left.
He missing the importance of testosterone in women. Obviously we have less than men but our own ratios of testosterone are higher than estrogen/ progesterone.
Mike, I gave you a like but I think that this is a complex subject. I am 71 and have always been very active but when you are waiting long times for various joint replacements and can’t sleep due to pain for years you can’t continue with explosive movements, sprinting,HIIT & jumping on boxes at CrossFit. Aren’t explosive moves more risky?You get stiff and lose alignment and even stretching is painful during and after. Those aging around me bull through and acquire injuries until they can’t anymore and others just get beaten down until fitness becomes occasional strolls with hunched backs and misaligned bodies that walk funny. Surgeons say take your Tylenol and keep active but HOW!? I do weights a couple of times a week on a total gym and pay dearly later.Also, balancing hormones usually means increasing estrogen which is risky for menopausal women, right? Aging is an art and a lot is about what goes wrong when. I have heard about increasing protein with age and take Perfect Aminos supplement which claims to be over 99 %absorbable compared to other proteins and not so hard on kidneys. I still worry when I hear about cancer risk so take minimum dose. I also bought supplements claiming to help mitochondrial aging. I try to learn how to go forward but I wish I could find more realistic advice about the realities of staying fit as you age as my waistline grows and grows 😮

Do you have room.for.other stuff other than meat? As that's an easy way to get.more.meat is by cutting the other foods that arent doing much for you and changing mentality.around food as nutrition.
This was an amazing update! Just what I have been looking for regarding these lingering questions in trying to troubleshoot my weight gain. I am in menopause and have been gaining weight progressively for 2 years even though I eat well, fast, and exercise. I knew that hormones were clearly at play but didn't really understand the intricacies. Thank you Mike, I will re-listen and see what I can do to change up my routine.
I've been having the same issues, although I've been intermittent fasting since 2016, eating a real food, organic diet and exercising. I actually felt like the IF wasn't beneficial anymore , went to a naturopath and we found my body,also going through menopause, was holding onto fat because of cortisol (and a few other reasons)she suggested I go off that until we can get my body out of stress again. She also upped my protien intake drastically, which I couldn't do in that short eating window. All our bodies are different and its important to address those issues that are pertinent to us. So while what he is saying here is generally the case, it won't work for everyone.

Such a good point about aging, social isolation, and limited movement due to fear of falling. We are struggling with these issues with a mid-80s family member currently who has had some stumbles and is now fearful of too much ______ (walking/lifting/going too far from home). In the last 6 months the decline has been dramatic. Family agrees, its mostly 'in their head' about the fear of doing too much, when moving more (use a walker, go to pool, senior workout class, etc) would actually benefit. In addition to our physical attributes, aging really is a state of mind!

Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods
Well the young heart attacks are the jab for starters. People got in this position with processed food and carbs and less protein. So whatever you are going to do drop refined carbs, processed food and seed oils. Just adding fruit and veg is not a good strategy. He himself says add eggs and red meat.
Get moving. Human beings were meant to move. Of course, like other sensible health embassadors, Mike has mentioned this many times in different video topics. It doesn't have to be grinding exercise, but just in the everyday living - the actions and footsteps add-up. Then there's the diet and choice of food, and then amount of food intake. These help if looked at and approached in a more basic level.

I think there's a book out suggesting exercise doesn't do much for weight loss. After 10 months your body adapts and you burn the same number of calories as before.
Can you not get a 60 + man and woman on your show to show their muscular health current OR improvement of muscle growth after following a regimen. Perhaps you have something like this already ??? The COVID lockdown really changed me ... not going out and depression caused bt concern and lockdown... I put on 2 sizes and now finding it very hard to get back to 2020 ME !!!
Working on this for my 71-year-old mother who planted herself on the couch in her early 60s and pretty much doesn't do much. We're talking about 500-700 steps PER DAY.

There is this guy at the gym, he's in his late 40, early 50, he is working so hard on the stepper machine every time i see him, but he has so much fat hanging on the side of his belly, so high intensity obviosly does not work for all. His wife is also there on the stepper, she looks completely fit, so either he cheat meals every day or this method just doesnt work for all.

I am in my mid 60's, I retired 7 months ago and I started exercising regularly, starting with walking and compound weight lifting. The first few months were hard and I didn't see much improvement. However, after 6 months my once flaccid biceps are back to being toned and strong. I have recently started some sprinting and it's going well, and I love the feeling of running again. I always add intensity to all my exercises very slowly to give my body time to adapt. I'm playing pickleball, golfing, and doing some exercise every day, and the weight is coming off. I'd encourage everyone to get out there and be active, you are more resilient than you think.

The key is getting away from stress. Until then… good luck. Work can be stressful, hated, toxic, drama, lose sleep, etc. High cortisol and little sleep simply will not allow one to lose weight. Period. Cortisol competes with estrogen in menopausal women and guess which one wins?

I just went meat heavy keto. With lots of bacon and red meat and some cheese. Off my meds and slowly losing my fat. Muscles coming back. Brain fog gone, diabetes gone, blood pressure problems gone. Ditch grains, vegetable oils and all sugars . Some fasting helps .
I go fat heavy and get the same benefits. Meat+veggies+lots of fats. I like fasting 2-3 days a week because it turns my brain into overdrive and I get some edge. Plus I don't have to worry about lunch at work.

I am a post menopausal woman, I lift weights and do many of the compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, overhead press etc, I am stronger with better health and body composition than when I was 20, back then I was living on salads, crash dieting and carbs. Now I aim for 2 gr of animal based protein per kilo of bodyweight! My recent test showed excellent health, Dr said I was better than 98% of the population and do not need to go back for tests for another two years. Other women my age are already frail and on meds, living on oatmeal and other high carb rubbish!

Was in a motorcycle wreck when I was 64 . Lots of broken bones but still ER doc said if I hadn't been in great shape I would have been much worse.
I still work out but not like I did but not giving up. That's a death sentence .
As a 70 year old, I've been on low carb for about 20 years, total, maybe 5+ years of that "keto-adjacent", the past year, carnivore-ish 😅. I’m 64. Play tennis every day. I train at CrossFit 5 days a week. Plus I go to the gym and do suplemental training to CrossFit 5 days a week. Eat a low carb, low PUFA, high protein diet. Body fat 12%, weight 210 with a height of 6’3”. People say I look amazing. But besides all this hard training, I lost 10% of max strength in major lift (squat, front squat, bench press, clean and jerk, snatch - no change on dead lift) Bottom line, aging taxes your muscles no matter how hard you work and train. But I won’t quit. In fact I am planning to move more the older I get. Still enjoining big time life

I was convinced a month ago by another video I saw, and I went sprinting two montings and I felt so much better, but then I stopped doing it out of laziness. I fast daily at least 18 hours, avoid high carb foods, bread,rice, pasta, wine, these only occasional. I walk 2 hours daily, hiking weekend, swimming 4 days a week. Am pretty OK with a stable BMI 18.5 at 70. Eat less and moving a lot, it's the keys that's very effective for most people. I never experienced any major issues during menaupose as most women do, no insomnia, no mood swings, maybe a bit of anxiety sometimes but overall I went through it smoothly. Could be because I have a very active lifestyle since very young age till now.
I think you are correct. I went through menopause quite easily. Some hot flashes for a couple of years and fatigue. But those happened when I indulged in sweets. When I stick to a low carb diet I feel fine. However I have been in a physically demanding job since my 40s. My choice to help myself get fit. My sisters who are in lower activity jobs have had a much harder time with menopause.

Love your research and enthusiasm for fitness, I turn 75 in less than a month and have been in and out of the Health Club business since 1971, I first lifted weights in 1958 when I got a free 1 month membership to the Health Club that opened up around the corner of my house. My normal mode of training is one work set to failure with an intensity level of 17-19 on the 20 scale (most trainees hover at or below 15 on their work sets) with the rep ranges varying per workout day.
I lift at a major nationwide gym and I lift heavier that the average well trained 25 year old and with much more intensity, I tell those who approach me excited by my strength and condition that it's not that much about what you do but to 'JUST KEEP IT UP'.
I lost 40 pounds last year by changing my eating habits and exercising a little more. 1 lb a week was my goal.

loved this video, I am 51M and super fit, run/ride/swim/wind surf. No sugar, no seed oils, high protein, high fat (tallow, butter and olive oil) no shit for years and I am fitter both cardio and strength as most of the 30 year olds i race against in windsurfing.
People do not realise how hard I train my HIIT workouts are 25km ride, 5km and 2 km swim.I do this 3 time a week in the morning and weight train 3 days a week. I need to train twice as hard as i did when I was 30.

It was simple for me. In spite of being an endurance athlete all of my life my cholesterol and blood pressure went up quite a bit due to poor diet. Well, being a focused (somewhat obsessive) I decided to make a change. Although I was not at all fat, I lost 15 pounds from 165 to 150 at 5'9" I feel great and am 67 and still can do a fast time trial with a very bad knee
I've been trying to deal with physical disabilities caused by extensive Osteoarthritis, bilateral sciatica, neuropathy, Fibromyalgia, and recently I had a heart attack. During my hospital stay tests confirmed that I have no blockages nor build-up of cholesterol in my arteries however, I have a mildly leaking valve and have been diagnosed with diastolic, congestive heart failure from years of uncontrolled blood pressure and stress.
I lost my husband in 2020 to suicide and have been in a downward sprial with my weight and health ever since!
Before he died I had started the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting and was losing weight rapidly and all seemed well until I started experiencing various episodes of severe vertigo. My doctor advised me to "stop the keto diet and fasting immediately or risk serious health complications"!
I have been advised to loose weight and work on starting a "healthy lifestyle" but have been given no advise as to how to achieve that goal with no information on diet or exercise that I can / should do! My primary doctor advised "moderate exercise to avoid causing another heart attack and /or further damage to my already arthric damaged hips, knees and also sciatica.
Can intermittent dieting be adapted in such a way as to avoid low blood sugar and prevent medical issues? Are there high intensity exercises and /or weight lifting that can be adapted safely into an exercise program to avoid problems with my heart and previously damaged joints?
BTW, I am 54 yrs old, am officially in menopause (no period for a bit over a year), and my blood tests confirm that I am currently pre-diabetic. I am told that my life expectancy lies somewhere between 5 and 10 yrs!... I have a lot to live for, including 2 grandchildren ages 3 and newborn!

I am so very sorry for your loss……Your dr was wrong about keto. That truly is the proper human diet. The vertigo you experienced was either from or combined with menopause symptoms and or electrolyte imbalance. I was dealing with the exact same thing when I first started. Going through peri menopause I decided to try keto. It’s amazing and works. Being a newbie though I never learned about getting enough salt. And to top it off I had anxiety/bouts of vertigo as a symptom from menopause. I bought lmnt electrolyte packets and started over salting my food and taking magnesium at night and before long, maybe three months, all menopause symptoms went away, even vertigo! I am now post menopause, 5 years keto (except for the last year I slipped up quite a bit, but back to it) and I kept all but 5lbs of weight off….30lbs down. Getting strict again. Can’t take hrt but just started Dhea 5mg slow to begin, because i have no hormones left. Hoping that and really watching my food gets me to my goal…good luck to you. Keto will not harm you, it can heal you, find a new dr! ❤

compound movements, sometimes in a fasted state. I’m also walking uphill more often. I walk up and down a .2 mile hill 15 times about 5X a week. I get Hawaiian sunshine at the same time and while listening to audio like yours!🤗
Fear of falling is huge. Happened to my father in law. His BP meds were overprescribed which lead to several falls. His fitness plummeted as he now shuffles slowly and in the last few years only walks with a walking frame. There are things you can do to prevent falls. Stretching and mobility is key as are simple balancing exercises. Posture is important and also foot health and eyesight. Mismatched eyes due to delay in second eye cataract surgery causes falls and walking insecurity.

Exercise exercise exercise. Move to increase your heart rate. Keep doing it because it gets easier the more you move. More exercise naturally suppresses your appetite and has an amazing anti-inflammatory effect. Stay motivated by avoiding dull drudgery workouts like treadmills. Walk outside at a brisk pace. Get a bike and ride trails. Ride off-road because drivers don’t respect cyclists. Get a mountain bike and ride technically challenging trails to improve your riding skills. Do the uphill climbs to get your heart rate up, then ride down the other side and drink up that sweet sweet endorphin/adrenaline cocktail. Crank back up to the top and do it again. Do this for 6 months then get on the scale and see what just happened.

I lost a lot of weight and the hormone I focused on helping to metabolize was Cortisol. I supplemented with Ashwaghanda! This video reminded me of that behavior and I will be re introducing that supplement once again thanks to your highlight of this!

I used to take ashwaghanda and I bought it specifically for that purpose: to lower my cortisol. I could tell the difference when I started using it. I slept much better, and had more energy in the day. I was more focused. Now I do fasting and notice that calming affect that ashwaghanda has.
I need to start incorporating weight training and ashwaghanda back into my routine again.
When the cortisol is high for too long, the body doesn't feel safe enough to lose weight.

I want to test an introduction of ashwaghanda as my next lifestyle change before switching into full keto again. @@xrystalskyes2838 I think we're all trying to figure out this weighloss thing. If you're a female, then It could be different reasons why we don't lose. Being in a calorie deficit is the first thing but NOT the only thing for women. If it is a hormonal issue, then that could stall weightloss. I just learned about how women should be eating around our monthly cycle to keep our progesterone high. When progesterone is high, cortisol is typically low. As women we need enough glucose in our body to produce the progesterone in our ovaries (this is typically the week before our period).
So it's not that women cannot do Keto, it just that we have to adjust it for our monthly cycle. Mindy Pelz goes into more about this.

The best time to take DHEA is in AM NOT PM. It follows the similar circadian pattern as cortisol, therefore higher in AM.
I totally agree that older people need to perform resistance training. We move our skeleton by controlling muscles. Sitting on a chair and performing biceps curl is not enough. We need to work on lower body, too (squat and etc.).
To sum it up: look at how Peter Hotez takes care of his health and do the exact opposite.

Mike, I'd like to add that if one puts a high resistance on the elliptical machine and then uses it to failure is also a good idea. Elliptical does use compound movement.

I do that also as a movement coach. Teaching elder individuals quadrupedal crawling is a blast. Once they get going they usually enjoy it, and once they feel it helping them walk and move better they love it.

Why lump yoga in with the eliptical? Yoga has improved my strength so much, and added flexibility and range of motion.
I'm too injured to sprint, lift weights, etc. and doctors won't operate to fix things on older people.
At 73, almost seven months of time restricted eating, within a six hour window. And high-intensity exercise: three-times-a-week doing wind sprints, skip roping, weight lifting has resulted in a fifteen pound loss.
Now, I have to find a way to tighten up excess skin around my former love handles and belly front so my eight pack is more defined!
Sorry to advise you that that loose skin will not 'tighten up', that is an age related issue. I lost over 50 pounds 2 years ago at your age (I'll be 75 in less than a month) and because I lost some muscle and all the fat on my biceps I have wrinkly skin in that area, I lost fat on my waist and I have empty fat sacks like you. Just know that depending on your genetics dhea may not work the way you hope. I had a doctor recommend it and it only went to increasing my estrogen- every estrogen related pms symptom became worse for me - but I have genetics pre-disposing me to estrogen excess. And yes I avoid environmental estrogens.

That's the age you should start working on your body. Didn't change much, just biking every day and swimming as much as possible (in summer 10 miles a week). Lost 15 lbs without changing my diet, but ok, don't eat a lot of sugar, never did. BMI now 22.4. almost no fat left.

He missing the importance of testosterone in women. Obviously we have less than men but our own ratios of testosterone are higher than estrogen/ progesterone.
Mike, I gave you a like but I think that this is a complex subject. I am 71 and have always been very active but when you are waiting long times for various joint replacements and can’t sleep due to pain for years you can’t continue with explosive movements, sprinting,HIIT & jumping on boxes at CrossFit. Aren’t explosive moves more risky?You get stiff and lose alignment and even stretching is painful during and after. Those aging around me bull through and acquire injuries until they can’t anymore and others just get beaten down until fitness becomes occasional strolls with hunched backs and misaligned bodies that walk funny. Surgeons say take your Tylenol and keep active but HOW!? I do weights a couple of times a week on a total gym and pay dearly later.Also, balancing hormones usually means increasing estrogen which is risky for menopausal women, right? Aging is an art and a lot is about what goes wrong when. I have heard about increasing protein with age and take Perfect Aminos supplement which claims to be over 99 %absorbable compared to other proteins and not so hard on kidneys. I still worry when I hear about cancer risk so take minimum dose. I also bought supplements claiming to help mitochondrial aging. I try to learn how to go forward but I wish I could find more realistic advice about the realities of staying fit as you age as my waistline grows and grows 😮

Reading directly from publications to the audience should be kept to an absolute minimum. Better to display the excised quotes from the publication BUT explain it in your own words. You have fantastic ability to interpret the salient medical information and explain it in English. Use it more! Most of us as we get older simply cannot eat that much. If i don't supplement protein then no way I will get enough of it.
Do you have room.for.other stuff other than meat? As that's an easy way to get.more.meat is by cutting the other foods that arent doing much for you and changing mentality.around food as nutrition.

This was an amazing update! Just what I have been looking for regarding these lingering questions in trying to troubleshoot my weight gain. I am in menopause and have been gaining weight progressively for 2 years even though I eat well, fast, and exercise. I knew that hormones were clearly at play but didn't really understand the intricacies. Thank you Mike, I will re-listen and see what I can do to change up my routine.
I've been having the same issues, although I've been intermittent fasting since 2016, eating a real food, organic diet and exercising. I actually felt like the IF wasn't beneficial anymore , went to a naturopath and we found my body,also going through menopause, was holding onto fat because of cortisol (and a few other reasons)she suggested I go off that until we can get my body out of stress again. She also upped my protien intake drastically, which I couldn't do in that short eating window. All our bodies are different and its important to address those issues that are pertinent to us. So while what he is saying here is generally the case, it won't work for everyone.

Such a good point about aging, social isolation, and limited movement due to fear of falling. We are struggling with these issues with a mid-80s family member currently who has had some stumbles and is now fearful of too much ______ (walking/lifting/going too far from home). In the last 6 months the decline has been dramatic. Family agrees, its mostly 'in their head' about the fear of doing too much, when moving more (use a walker, go to pool, senior workout class, etc) would actually benefit. In addition to our physical attributes, aging really is a state of mind!

What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications.
Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks.
Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods
Well the young heart attacks are the jab for starters. People got in this position with processed food and carbs and less protein. So whatever you are going to do drop refined carbs, processed food and seed oils. Just adding fruit and veg is not a good strategy. He himself says add eggs and red meat.
Humans can't process plants well.
Stick to fatty meat.
Avoid all carbs.
Any Whole Foods. Get rid of processed crap. No sugar, no starches, no wheat corn or soy. No seed oils
I ditched everything but meats and eggs. Only some low oxalate vegetables I grow in my garden

Get moving. Human beings were meant to move. Of course, like other sensible health embassadors, Mike has mentioned this many times in different video topics. It doesn't have to be grinding exercise, but just in the everyday living - the actions and footsteps add-up. Then there's the diet and choice of food, and then amount of food intake. These help if looked at and approached in a more basic level.
I find that your UA-cam videos nowaday are meant to promote your bebeerine product and not helpful to provide unbiased information. I am not sure whether I will spend time on your future videos.
I think there's a book out suggesting exercise doesn't do much for weight loss. After 10 months your body adapts and you burn the same number of calories as before.

Can you not get a 60 + man and woman on your show to show their muscular health current OR improvement of muscle growth after following a regimen. Perhaps you have something like this already ??? The COVID lockdown really changed me ... not going out and depression caused bt concern and lockdown... I put on 2 sizes and now finding it very hard to get back to 2020 ME !!!

Working on this for my 71-year-old mother who planted herself on the couch in her early 60s and pretty much doesn't do much. We're talking about 500-700 steps PER DAY.

Am I misunderstanding? 5:28 the study says estrogen deficiency INCREASES Lipolysis? I thought decreases in estrogen results in decreases in lipolysis.

There is this guy at the gym, he's in his late 40, early 50, he is working so hard on the stepper machine every time i see him, but he has so much fat hanging on the side of his belly, so high intensity obviosly does not work for all. His wife is also there on the stepper, she looks completely fit, so either he cheat meals every day or this method just doesnt work for all.
They probably.eat entirely different diets and have different genetics (one would hope lol). Reversing insulin resistance is no joke and she is.likely not IR. Exercise is essential.as we age and so is a high protein low carb diet..consistently.

There are over 40 million people in the US with CKD and many more who don't know they have it because there's no early symptoms until it maybe too late. I think it is important to address this issue so unsuspecting people do not unknowingly cause irreparable damage to their kidneys.
