What do you mean by extinct? There are still many in service, private ownership and in use beyond museum pieces. Still in use to reach remote islands eg in Alaska and widely for firefighting, they are used around the world just less so for mass transportation and that for the better. Their limitations in aerodynamic design and being unsuitable for jet engines settled their demise and imagine a busy airport as LAX on water... But yes. A lovely era that came to an end but they still have their niche to fill.
@Name-ot3xw --- If it was the company flying out of Miami, it went out of business a couple years ago after a rotted wing broke off and crashed killing all on board just after it took off. Can't remember the name but it was the oldest seaplane passenger airline company.

Passenger air travel preceded the infrastructure of airports. The water lent itself to wonderfully large and seemingly romantic flying boats.
Most of the seaplanes you find now are used for tourist excursions. I know some Grummans are still flying off the Florida coast down to the Bahamas.
