The actuators consist of 12 Volt DC motors with reduction gears that are used to move the various flaps inside the HVAC unit, to adjust the temperature and direction of airflow in the vehicle’s cabin. Their position is adjusted via the voltage supplied from the HCM.
Some common issues are the reduction gears inside the actuators strip or crack with age, and the HCM can no longer work out their position. In some cases, a power interruption can make the HCM forget the actuator position setting. A common issue that causes fault codes B0228 and B0418 can be a broken Air Inlet / Recir Door (GM part #92246499)
