We went through Glacier Bay on May 10th this year (2011) for our honeymoon, and calved for us... but not this spectacularly! Our digital camcorder had only a digital zoom, and we didn't get the clarity of your camera. That was great! Thank you for sharing your video.
Great video of the glacier cutting loose of some massive chunks of ice and snow. The only drawback was your being surrounded by chatter boxes who's screams/yells when things were falling was a bit of a get on your nerves type annoyance. Why can't people keep from sounding like a bunch of background nitwits? This was not a cocktail party. Sorry for the rant. Thanks for sharing.
It's not a cocktail party, but it is still entertainment - inasmuch as this is probably a paid or ticketed tour boat - and given you're getting to see what they did for free, maybe shut the fuck up about the other people enjoying it in a way you deem inappropriate.
but then we still want to hear the natural sound of the ice cracking and hitting the water..you get it...Mother Natures sound...also if you insist on having people on the boat..women especially with their 'oh my gaaard...woooow'..then have the sound of one of them falling into the water and going into shock and drowning..now that would make me happy!
Made me wonder just how long that had been a mighty glacier. Now it's become just part of the water it once towered over. Sad, really. Boy oh boy, we're going to keep living as we do, not willing to give up our "disposable lifestyles" and to hell with damaging the Earth! We won't be around to see the day when all of the beauty and wonder is gone and if people want to see a tree, they'll have to travel great distances because wood was such a money-making industry. It occurs to me that the damage to our environment began when the "great Industrial age" began. Sorry - got distracted. I'll step down from my soapbox and say how beautiful the calving was- it really was. Thank you for sharing this!
It started breaking up before the American and French revolutions. It's like dominoes - once it started collapsing 250+ years ago, it doesn't stop until the foot is above water level. Nothing to do with people, not that facts matter.

(at least I hope we haven’t met) You have a lovely holiday and don’t forget to bundle up for your annual “Holiday Cheer Annual Trek Celebration!” Didn’t think I knew about it? Yes, I know all about it - packing up all that delicious food, turkeys, hams, lamb, pies, cakes, cookies, candies with all the trimmings. Packed into individual portions - it must smell incredible! Going downtown where the less fortunate “live”, setting up tables and benches so all of your so-close friends take a seat, meal pkgs are passed out and you all sit and eat, all the time talking about what humanitarians you are. At the sound of a bell, you all rise and leave the table as quickly as you can, leaving your plates on the tables for the homeless to pick through. Doesn’t that make you feel like humanitarians? 😊

There are a wonderful things that shouldn't happen during an event like glacier calving. The first is stupid music. The second is stupid music covering up the sounds of nature.
Why music? You're covering up the sound of raw nature with crappy dinner music like youre in a restaurant. You go out on a boat to watch something hreat and grand, but ibnore it with music. Pointless.😊
