How To Clean a Clarinet Mouthpiece

A few months ago I read a very interesting post of my friend Manuel Jiménez, where he talked about the calcified residue that builds up on your clarinet mouthpiece due to use and lack of cleanliness.

I personally used to clean my mouthpiece with warm water -usually when I changed my mouthpiece patch-, but after a short period of time I already had the typical white stains again and I had the feeling they didn’t disappear completely.
In his post, Manuel talks about two home remedies:
The first one is to leave the mouthpiece in a mixture of white vinegar and water for about 10 minutes. After this period of time, one has to finish taking what is left off with one’s thumb, without using paper or cloths. If the calcified residue is very strong, instead of using the white vinegar mixed with water, you would use it pure.
The other remedy is the one Bradford Behn explains in one of his posts and that is using lemon juice, either the one you find at the supermarket or just plain natural lemon juice.
I decided to try the second method because I could easily do it at home and because it is a natural remedy. And this is how I did it:
1. Take a manual or electrical orange/lemon squeezer.
2. Choose 4 lemons.
3. Take a knife and a transparent glass.
4. Start squeezing the lemons.
5. Prepare the mouthpiece, taking off the patch.
6. Place the mouthpiece in the glass with lemon juice.
7. As Bradford Behn says, leave it about 10 minutes in the lemon juice concentrate. If the residue is very hard, you will need to repeat the process a couple of times, otherwise it will not be totally clean. In my case, I had to do it twice.
It might seam that it goes a greeny color, but don’t worry. After a few days’ time and with the help of the natural oil of your hands, the mouthpiece will recuperate it’s normal colour.
8. Take the mouthpiece out of the lemon juice.
9. Clean it thoroughly with water and dry it with a cotton cloth.

It is also interesting to know that there are different brands that offer cleansing products, such as Iván Martín or EGR Ligatures, but I have never tried them.

Como podemos devolver , el brillo a las llaves del clarinete , ennegrecidas por la ebonita de la boquilla, sin utilizar productos demasiado abrasivos
Con un baso de chupito bastaría con dos limones. Hay que ahorrar :)

Y ¿cómo harías para abrillantar una boquilla que ha perdido su brillo original por el sol y protegerla para evitar que se queme?
Hola Juanma, yo tengo un amigo que la abrillanta con pintalábios (remedio casero y no agresivo).
Seguí este video para limpiar la boquilla usando el método del limón, y sorpresa: SE HA QUEDADO VERDE y no, no se quita el color.
Después de un año sigo teniendo una boquilla verde.
Hay algún remedio para esto?
No es la boquilla más cara del mundo, es una vandoren B40 pero da vergüenza verla.
Hola Esther, yo utilitzo polvos talco con agua y frotada con un Trapo de algodón. Es muy importante no tocar los rieles ni la tabla de la boquilla. Este proceso puede tardar unos 20 minutos pero el óxido del caucho se quita. No me gusta utilitzar papeles de lija en la boquilla. Para mí es demasiado agresivo. Un saludo.
