  • RADIO NOVA began in Dublin, Ireland on Monday 29th June 1981 - and it's not an understatement to say that its arrival made a remarkable impression on the radio landscape in Ireland
This selection of jingles and promos will give you an idea of the style and sound of this iconic radio station
There had never been any radio station like it before - and probably never again.
As well as the jingles, you will hear the voice of Chris Cary (the driving force of Radio Nova), also the vocal and production genius of Tony Allen!
    Tony Allen - voice-overs:
    Happy 3rd Birthday Nova
    Radio Nova T-Shirts
Radio Nova Car Stickers Lucky Numbers
Radio Nova - Don't Let Us Down
    Chris Cary - voice-overs:
Disco Nova & the station TOTH
(Other jingles featured here are from the Nova Satellite service)
The 'clutter-free' radio format that Radio Nova used, originated in the USA.
Cary studied this format and introduced this to his new creation in Dublin
However, Radio Nova was not the first radio station in Ireland to use this format; that title belongs to a station called KELO
KELO broadcast on AM from the North Dublin town of Swords with a 'clutter-free' format and pre-dated Radio Nova by many months
Cary was a little economical with the truth with regards to audience reach, as can be seen in one of the advertising brochures - aimed at potential UK advertisers
In reality, Radio Nova was existing on advertising revenue, mostly drawn from Dublin Advertising Agencies
Radio Nova went through many presenters during its near 5 year existence
The station also went through a lot of AM frequencies:
    729 KHz, 846 KHz, 819 KHz, 738 KHz, 828 KHz and 891 KHz
If you include the LW EXIDY broadcast, that's 254 KHz
Also on this video, you'll see a poster advertising Disco Nova, promoting Happy Hour - with ladies FREE! Disco Nova was located at Nova Park (formerly Greenacres) in Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland
Radio Nova was a trailblazer; it helped launch many radio careers
It was in the right place at the right time - it broke the mould of Irish radio.
The station raised money for charity; gave away money by phone-ins
It also suffered from raids by the Department of Post & Telegraphs and Gardaí (Irish police) There were Director disputes, staff sackings; High Court cases and a long and bitter dispute involving the National Union of Journalists
RADIO NOVA began in Dublin, Ireland on Monday 29th June 1981
After nearly 5 years of broadcasting, RADIO NOVA closed down for the last time on Wednesday 19th March 1986 at 18:00
