      Jews have to be one of the most agnostic religions I've encountered. They're so critical of everything there's a cultural rule called the 10th man rule. Where if 9 people agree on something it's the responsibility of the 10th man to be critical of it and argue the opposing view.

      I'm a regular atheist (there aren't LEVELS of atheism, you either believe in a magic sky daddy or you don't) and this was one of the dumbest scenes ever filmed. Great acting, but most black people are rabidly antisemitic, so the idea of a black person wanting to be a jew that badly is preposterous.

    I'm more spiritual than religious, but out of all the religions, I've always thought Judaism was one of the most chill and intelligent since they actually debate and study life. I grew up in a Christian/Catholic small town, I don't think there was a single Jewish family there, and I'd often hear the message "It's in God's hands." and "Don't question the Lord." and other such passive bs. I love that Judaism is proactive and they encourage discussion about the faith, rather than expecting everyone to blindly believe whatever the bible or what a priest tells them.

    • @harleydakotanaval4781

      I was raised Christian and I've ALWAYS questioned the Bible which pissed off my mom. I'd often get in trouble, yelled at, or my mom would whoop me if I said too much questions at church. I'm likely going to look into Judaism after this because it seems unanimous that my initial behavior would be encouraged. I don't know how to properly explain it but I felt something click in my mind if that makes sense?

      @NaomiOff 9 років тому +8

      Rachel Stewart If I can give you an advice, my israeli friend told me that the liberal conversion are still not recognized in the world (except by the liberal synagogues of course), but for example, you're not recognized as a jew in Israel. So maybe you should make an orthodox conversion, even if after your practice in a more liberal way.

    • @rachelstewart1226
      @rachelstewart1226  9 років тому +70

      NaomiOff Thank you for the advice, Naomi. I already know that though. I have spoken with Orthodox rabbis and seriously considered converting that way, but in the end, orthodoxy goes against many of my deepest values (gay rights, for example). I was forced to choose between being widely recognized as a Jew everywhere and going against my beliefs or only being considered a Jew in some movements and not recognized by Israel and being true to myself. I chose the latter, and so far have been very happy with that decision. Israel might not recognize me as a Jew, but that's okay by me.

    that's odd. its not like you ask a rabbi to become a jew and he says yes and then she/he is a jew. it takes work. studying, takes at least 3 years.

    what is the meaning of this scene?

    • @specialtramp
      @specialtramp 9 років тому +45

      rodrigosalasja This character, Black Cindy, decides to convert to Judaism to get kosher meals in prison (which are much better than the standard food). This is the moment when Cindy realizes she's actually learned during her torah studies and sincerely wants to become Jewish. Cindy's no longer doing it just for the food (microwaved frozen broccoli!) but because it fed a spiritual hunger she didn't even know she had.

      Started for the food, then through learning developed a genuine desire to convert. Nobody gets that emotional about broccoli.

    Like you need a person's permission or approval to become jewish???!!! I know it's just a show but people who are new to the faith will watch this and think that you have to go to a mere mortal man to be accepted in Judaism when you're supposed to go to THE MOST HIGH.

    • @NaomiOff

      A rabbi can refuse a conversion, it happened to my sister. She wanted to convert to marry a jewish guy but when the rabbi understood that it was a marriage by interest he said no
