likewise, how you have to view race and racism in the context of the place it is happening. Racism and stereotyping etc. in the US comes from a very different history and place than in Europe - and especially in Italy. It doesn't excuse anything .
I am blond Italian of italian descendents, light skin, looking more like northern / eastern european and when in Rome, Milan I often get spoken in english even after I say I am italian.... wherever I go, also abroad I get comments like: oh but you don't look Italian... like constantly. I don't really care.. I just take it as it is, also I think anyone of us should be proud of their origins, when someone asks Regarding being black in Italy vs UK, we see how UK is now so use to a multiethnic society without thinking of the reasons behind being centuries and centuries of colonization and submission of black africans... they can't just wipe off their long racist history with their politeness
@@milantehrandubai Not in my opinion. Olive skin, dark hair, and dark eyes is probably more stereotypical and associated for phenotypical Italian (granted that's probably more Southern Italian).
Sorry to say, but none of these examples are racism AT ALL. I live in France, where there are maaaaannyyy foreigners of many races, and they also do not give you citizenship if you're born, why? Because there are so many people who want to move that they want to restrict the access not racist. Also if a country has been predominately the same race for centuries OF COURSE they will act differently and ASSUME you are foreign! It's no science! I recently went to China, GUESS WHAT, they all assumed I was not chinese xD. AND, if I happened to be born in China it would be 1000% normal for EVERYONE to think I was a foreigner every single day. What the bus driver did was a classic scheme to trick foreigners and charge them more, they do this in every single country. Why? Because they see someone that looks different and they assume stuff, it is normal! And if you want to challenge this, in France they think I'm from Spain or Portugal, in USA they think i'm Italian, in Mexico they think I'm Arabic, and they all assume stuff about me UNTIL, they hear me speak and hear my story. People are kind by nature, you just have to give them a chance and be as forgiving as possible.
@@milantehrandubai Sorry to burst your bubble but not all white people are Germans there’s also Mediterranean white and Slavic, and especially in the south of Italy, they look like me. Even Italians from Italy have said this and US people. But of course you read the word Mexican and your brain thought “oh Mexicans are a race and they’re not white” but in Mexico we also have people from Spain, French and many European countries, so yes, white. Also the majority of my ancestors are literally from Spain and some from France and I know you’re probably of the ignorant thought that people from Spain aren’t white, but again…. they are 😲
You doing right my queen. I'm soo proud of you standing up for our people. I know this probably happens on the regular. At least you are one of the few to call people out about this. I definitely would like to see a part 2 about this
This is really interesting! I actually studied abroad in Florence and witness some racism of African immigrants. Fortunately, I haven’t experienced racism myself. I subscribed.
Sad thou, that bus driver knew what he did. I am happy the manager apologize. Even black people can be racist. I face racism here as well in Jamaica, all the time withy daughter, because her complexion is lighter than mine and her hair texture is wavey.
That's not racism. That's prejudice. The vast majority of brown-skin people can't ever be racist. Racist/race is a made-up word. We are *mankind* Everyone on the Earth is a variation of the color Brown with variations of of dominant and recessive phenotypes that ALL come FROM Brown-skin people. The White term was created around 1681. Designed for social control. How can a person hate melanin when the are made up of the substance? Hate Brown skin, but will risk skin cancer to be Brown? Jana Elliott and Frances Cress Welsing can also teach about the hidden truth. My other channel wihout the "low" in the title (black circle with a silver figure 8 inside) has a lot on my favourites list. If you have questions, just ask.

No. Sometimes haters just hate even when you have good positive loving energy. Racists hate nice sweet people too. They don't discriminate based on energy. Energy is a big thing, but racism is not based on energy whatsoever.
I have Italian ethnicity/ancestry on my moms side, I told this Italian guy that because we were talking about italy and he quickly changed the subject like he didn’t want to hear that because I’m biracial (german/black) lol I will keep telling Italians this to annoy them!
Girl I swear the same thing happens to me as well. Whenever I tell Egyptians that I am Black American and mixed with Egyptian, they get so mad and annoyed. They always bring up how I am Black or how the Nubians were slaves. And I am like but I am not Nubian and remind them of my Egyptian blood. It bothers them so much.
Why do you always generalize? It is absolutely not true that we dislike black people. Too much prejudice on your part. There are good and bad people all over the world, in every ethnicity and nationality you should never generalize. We also have to see the behavior of many foreigners in Italy who do not always like to integrate and many also isolate themselves because of their cultures, religions and ways of thinking and it is inevitable that misunderstandings, misunderstandings also arise, some Italians are very distrustful, others are not as everywhere in the world. Italy is still now experiencing the phenomenon of immigration does not have the history of the U.S. on this issue, also Italy has always been a country divided between North and South, still today there is discrimination between Italians and Italians, I am from Southern Italy and I can confirm this because I experienced it on my skin, but we are not bad people. Italians very much reflect the Cancer zodiac sign, they are highly stressed, anxious, they complain often, they are moody, they can hate you one day and love you the next. Much is also due to a lot of ignorance, politics that do damage and divide like Salvini and company but also the press that feeds these things with their lies and misinformation. Many Americans lately enjoy making videos and pointing fingers at Italians calling them a racist people. One should not fuel divisions by generalizing. The United States should not point the finger at Italy on racism because the pages of its history are stained with blood.
If you weren't born and raised here, then you're not italian. American obsession with ethnicity is just obnoxious. You are first and foremost an American, regardless of your ancestors' nationality.
Thanks for the opening eyes vídeo. I live here for 8 months now and i can Tell they Very uncomfortable with Black people presence in the country. 🤔 Well, one thing is for sure. We can all agree that we are different! And that the world is still full of ignorant people who lack education and empathy. We have come a long way, but still have a long way to go before some people accept where you are born. More people need to do what you did.
I just wish there was more acceptance. You don't have to like me. Just accept that this is my cultural background and treat me with respect. Thank you for the encouragement💞🙏🏽💞🙏🏽💞🙏🏽
ALESSIA BIANCHINI I hear what you are saying Alessia. Unfortunately, la patria for some people is whites Italians...White Spanish nationality. You nor I will change how some people see people of biracial birth being born in Europe as being of the motherland. Although we can accept that they will not change their way of thinking, they cannot accept that you can be truly Italian in the same way that a black person or biracial person is born in an Asian country. Only in time and with education and tolerance will the world come to accept. No one should beat themselves up about the negativeness of others. People are who they are. And it is far to easy to say, if you don’t like it, you can just move on. Have a blessed day woman of more than one culture. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

We have the same “where are you from“ problem in Canada, even with our diverse multi-cultural country. My parents immigrated from Trinidad in 1968 when I was two. My first memory is a townhouse in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Just outside of Toronto. When a fellow Canadian asks me where I’m from, I say Brampton. They often follow up with “where are you from originally”, with a “yeah right” tone in their voice and a snug look on their face. At that point, they only get negative attitude from me.
Sorry to hear about your experience. I have never been to Italy but my mother is from there. I always thought Italians weren't racist, because of my mom, I guess. She never seemed to be. And because of things here in America. It is just so much worse. I have experienced negative comments because of my Italian heritage. I'm like...What? Dang. Well, I can't do anything about that. Let me give Don Corleone a call.
(Sono Italiano, nato e cresciuto) Quick story: Two of my colleagues (white) from California went to Rome and got in a Taxi to go from the airport to their hotel. The taxi cab driver requested $50 dollars but the meter said something else. So they requested the balance back. The taxi cab driver stuck the $50 dollar bill in his seat and pretended that he didn't have it. The couple left infuriated because they only spoke English and could not communicate in Italian. I'm sorry to say that we have some charlatans and con artists in Italy. Most people are nice but just be on the look out.

Per me, razzismo è ben altro.

Hi gf, Which part of Italy are you in? I would love to get in contact! I'm wondering if it's worth living in Italy & would like some advice from a native of colour!
Would you say you like living in italy and are people friendly to you? I have thought of going to italy for high school but i wouldn't want to go to a country and be dealing with racism especially in school so how was your experience in scool in italy. Also I'm sorry you had to deal with that. You're very Gorgeous by the way :)
First of all, thank you sweetie for the compliment.❤❤❤ Honestly the racism in Italy is due to a lack of knowledge of the Black/African culture and a lot of misconceptions that I don't think the black community in Italy has even tried to correct. I don't believe that it is intentional at all times eventhough obviously I have experienced comments that I could have happily lived without. The most hurtful thing for me is being Italian by birth but due to colourism generated by lack of knowledge, people don't see me as an Italian citizen. I am not ashamed of my colour though. I love being tan all year round and well, the boys appreciate it too. Schools are not racist though. I see lots of white italians mixing with black kids and it actually makes my heart smile. Some of those black school kids actually speak fluently the dialect of my part Italy. So don't shut an opportunity beacuse of a few issues. You can conquer it all, babygirl👏🏽❤😉. In Florence, if you buy a ticket on the bus - it almost cost twice as much as the regular ticket - it is 1,50 normal or 2 if you buy it on the bus. The bus driver you had was an a-hole. You did the right thing - oftentimes here - like everywhere people do not take the time to complain and take a stand.
True. I have been in places where the price increases if you buy on board. However, like you said, this driver was not correct at all in his behaviour. I am glad he is only one of the few as I often take the bus and have met some lovely drivers ❤
@@AlessiaBianchinii You learned English from a British instructor(s) so you have that accent. Your mother's accent from Nigeria i hear as well. And of course the Italian 😁
You are too young to remember, but before of the '80 there was almost no black people in Italy. So having black people is something very very new. In Paris it was very common since 150 years, in Italy you only meet Italians up to 1985..... I think it matter of time.

Italy is historic in every sense, had aggro when I went there and so did friends of mine - generally backward and dark ages meets beautiful buildings and food
Sorry for your experiences. I can somewhat relate. Believe it or not Italy also has (including presently) a regional/colorism problem of internal discrimination between Northern Italians and Southern Italians (saying that from first hand experience). This goes back to Italy's modern unification in the 1860s/1870s. That includes violence, being criminalized (which I know from first hand experience), and rent discrimination. I hope people in Italy will realize that the true meaning of Italian is not skin color, but more so national/cultural identity. I identify as Italian ethnically though I'm Italian-American, American by current citizenship. I hope it will get better in Italy/Italia.
"Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group". This is the definition of racism from google. How does the fact that people ask you for your origins fit this definition? The vast majority of italians are white, so it's logical that they get curious about you. It happens the same to me living in a foreign country. I don't get mad, because I honestly don't care and it actually is a good conversation starter. If british people do not keep asking, there are two possibilities: they are invaded by political correctness and don't dare to ask, or they are just not interested in you. You might also see that as being polite, but it is very likely that they still wonder what your origins are. Also, how does a shop owner trying to make you pay more for a different ticket (assuming that was the aim) fit the definition of racism. Being scammed happens to a lot of tourists in Italy, unfortunately... A lot! And the guy might have wanted to play with you assuming you were a tourist. But it also happened to me when I was on a school trip to Rome, and multiple times... I honestly think you are way out of track: you got overly conscious about your skin color and you are seeing racism everywhere. And I say that, because you are basing your claims of racism on your own assumptions and perceptions. If anyone shouted at you stupid epithets concerning your skin color, we wouldn't have a doubt of that being racist and I would stand beside you. But people might treat you differently or even dislike you not necessarily because of your skin color... You assuming that racism is the reason does not equal that being racist. Best!
I appreciate the analysis but I would like to underline that there is more to it than this video can ever show. The tone of voice, the strange looks, the "are you adopted?" question... I have had my share of banter with friends and family about my colour or where I am from. I reckon that most people can tell when someone is being friendly or not. The ticket man fooled me by paying more and not giving me a ticket. I would have gotten sanctioned by a control officer thanks to him. How do I know he was acting smart? Because a situation like that occured months before to another lady of colour and a colleague of the ticket man. I am not a tourist. I am in my twenties and I have attended both schools in the UK and in Italy. I have lived both countries within the walls of school and outside.
@@AlessiaBianchinii Sure. I don't necessarily want to transform this into a debate, but I don't see any of my points addressed in your reply... The scam happened to some of your black friends, ok. But it happened to me too, and to my school mates, and to the Californian couple the guy mentioned in his comment... The whole point is that you should not infer other people's intent through your subjective perception of reality. For two reasons: you might be wrong or you might develop a confirmation bias or both - so for example, you might interpret a man staring at you because of your color, when in reality he might just look at you because you are an attractive woman. That said, it's true, I don't know all your experience. I just thought one more perspective might help. Cheers!
@@biapac7849 You're "logic" and lack of empathy has allowed you to type an entire paragraph disregarding some of true nuances of racism based on a google definition. The real truth is, the racism black people experience are not just being called names and epithets. It is also red lining, gentrification, police brutality, unconscious bias superiority complexes etc... and this beautiful young lady doesn't only identify as black but also Italian. And when she expresses her experiences which differ from yours... you seek to disprove a notion you seem to be annoyed by instead seeking to understand what so many black or mixed folks (still considered black) are facing all around the world. Sure you have been to other countries and had some strange looks and never took it personally. But based on the memoir you were so chipper to type, it's based on your experience. And your experience is thee white experience. White/European can travel any where and not feel as uncomfortable as non white because the powers that be have for the most part always been Caucasian. American white supremecy, British colonialism, Nazi regimes. So on and so forth... my point is... that YOUR POINT says her experience can't be labeled as experiencing racism because the google definition doesn't match. Hey 👋 Alessia. I’ve heard about racism in Italy. I swear in my last visit to Rome, a crazy looking cyclist said the N word to me. I’m a black British woman. I’ve been in Italy 🇮🇹 a few times. I speak Italian too. Many Italians I meet ask me where I’m from even when I tell them London but I end up talking about my West African parents who settled in the UK.
Her Father is Italian, so that makes her Italian. As for your comment, I seriously don't know why Africans would leave a place like Africa despite the challenges to live in a place where they are not welcomed 😔 it's sad! and a pity!

Sorry but I don't believe you, here in Italy we love blonde Northern European people, a lot of Italians wish they look like Northern European people. Discrimination in Italy for being blonde? Sorry but that's not true.
Sorry if you experienced racism in my country, it's very uncommon to hear racist episodes because in southern Italy we are very inclusive with foreign people. Racial prejudice is everywhere in the world and Italy is not a racist country. I can turn very dark skinned in summer and so far I've never been discriminated by the color of my skin. In my family we are very open about interracial relationships
s and the way African immigrants are exploited as workhands for harvesting the fields of Campania, Apulia, Calabria, etc. is indeed a patent example of the praiseworthy “Southern Italian inclusivity” , not to mention the tragedy of Rosarno

In the usa they don't think you're italian. Italians are white

Even black people can be racist. I face racism here as well in Jamaica, all the time withy daughter, because her complexion is lighter than mine and her hair texture is wavey.
Honestly there is no way to make somebody happy. One day you are too light. One day you are too dark. I wish people were more accepting sometimes❤
Colorism*
That's not racism. That's prejudice. The vast majority of brown-skin people can't ever be racist.
Racist/race is a made-up word. We are *mankind*
Everyone on the Earth is a variation of the color Brown with variations of of dominant and recessive phenotypes that ALL come FROM Brown-skin people.

No. Sometimes haters just hate even when you have good positive loving energy. Racists hate nice sweet people too. They don't discriminate based on energy. Energy is a big thing, but racism is not based on energy whatsoever.
As a person who manipulates energy to the point that ppl find me enigmatic, this is not true!
sorry but here are no black italians, no white japanese and no asian nigerians.
I have Italian ethnicity/ancestry on my moms side, I told this Italian guy that because we were talking about italy and he quickly changed the subject like he didn’t want to hear that because I’m biracial (german/black) lol I will keep telling Italians this to annoy them!
Why would it annoy them? I could care less. Do you think the red carpet is given to whites in predominately black countries?
Girl I swear the same thing happens to me as well. Whenever I tell Egyptians that I am Black American and mixed with Egyptian, they get so mad and annoyed. They always bring up how I am Black or how the Nubians were slaves. And I am like but I am not Nubian and remind them of my Egyptian blood. It bothers them so much.
Tiffany Sky I'm italian and i really don't care who you are and your ethnicity.

The taxi cab driver requested $50 dollars but the meter said something else. So they requested the balance back. The taxi cab driver stuck the $50 dollar bill in his seat and pretended that he didn't have it. The couple left infuriated because they only spoke English and could not communicate in Italian. che cattiveria❗ vedo scene simili a volte e se posso cerco di tradurre e mediare.
Per me, razzismo è ben altro.
There are charlatan taxi drivers in many countries and are so annoying. The good thing with taxi hailing apps is that it avoids this kind of situation

well even if you get italian citizenship at age 18, italians still won't see you as italian, i know this by expirience that's why i don't like Italy
I speak Italian too. Many Italians I meet ask me where I’m from even when I tell them London but I end up talking about my West African parents who settled in the UK.
Yeah so you're not originally british, it's just historical truth !
You Africans are crazy. Im sorry. The countries you come from are so beautiful. Why do you put up with this?
Her Father is Italian, so that makes her Italian. As for your comment, I seriously don't know why Africans would leave a place like Africa despite the challenges to live in a place where they are not welcomed 😔 it's sad! and a pity!
I have lived a lot of years in Italy (which I love) I am blonde northern European and to be honest I have always had prejudice against me for being different, looking different and a different accent.
Sorry to hear that 😔 where are you from? 💕💕💕
Sorry but I don't believe you, here in Italy we love blonde Northern European people, a lot of Italians wish they look like Northern European people. Discrimination in Italy for being blonde? Sorry but that's not true.
This is not true and stupid I know italians who are blonde my grandad was a blue eyed blonde from calabria so dont stereotype us!!!!!!!!!!!
She just stated her truth of how racist the country is and you are going to sit there and say Italy is not racist. You must be kidding me.
s and the way African immigrants are exploited as workhands for harvesting the fields of Campania, Apulia, Calabria, etc. is indeed a patent example of the praiseworthy “Southern Italian inclusivity” , not to mention the tragedy of Rosarno
Another country I will boycott thanks for the details.
You should move to another country Italy is italy
Yeah! A third world SH*&%Hole

I’m in rome right now and I hate it here🤨this place is more racist than the US😡
So sorry to hear that. Rome is usually quite friendly.
@@AlessiaBianchinii I’m very disappointed because I love everything Italian that’s why I came here but I am shocked the way the people are here.
Not all are bad apples 😊 I am sure you will find someone that will make a difference on your trip
