Frances McDormand, who played Chief Marge, is married to Joel Coen, who directed the film an co-wrote it along with his brother Ethan. One day he told his wife that they had written a part specifically for her. When she read the script she was gobsmacked that they would write that character - chipper, friendly Marge - with her in mind.

The contrast between the"Minnesota nice" accent and the increasingly dark deeds going on is amazing in this film. Especially as Jerry's entire life spirals into the crapper over his "brilliant" idea, lol...

  • @kbrewski1
    @kbrewski1 3 місяці тому +2

A couple things about this great movie you should understand about the offbeat humor. This all takes place primarily in MINNESOTA, except the opening and closing scene in FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA, right near the MINNESOTA border. The Coen Brothers (Directors and Writers) are Jewish guys who grew up in the suburbs of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St Paul). For some context, Prince was from Minneapolis and kept his studio and home there.
The way people talked in the movie was spot on. Exaggerated for comedic effect, yes, but still very accurate. How do I know? Because I lived in and was raised in Minnesota the first 12 years of my life. Grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis. So I instantly loved this film when it came out because of the comedic spoof of the exaggerated Swedish/Nordic/German accents and language usage.
The use of "yahh" is very common up north. So is the iconic "You Betcha". I still say that frequently in every day conversation even though its been decades since I lived in Minn. "Ohh, you got that right". is another one. Etc. The Coen Brothers obviously had fun poking fun of their fellow Minnesotans.
A 2nd running gag were all the FOOD scenes and references. In almost every scene, people are eating. Minnesota and Wisconsin are known for the plethora of BUFFET RESTAURANTS. They are everywhere. Family Style food eating with semi edible all you can eat options. In cold winter climates, people tend to eat more. Especially popular up north are SUPPER CLUBS where people sit at large round dinner tables and are served huge quantities of food that are shared and passed around as if you were at a Thanksgiving Dinner. I've been to many great Supper Clubs.
So all the shots of buffets, huge portions, fast food, etc, mixed with the worms, the planning of food trips pregnant Marge made, and finding restaurants to eat at (like Pancakes House) were again poking fun at something Minnesota is just known for, right down to the scene at the Embers Restaurant, a popular Minneapolis area restaurant I've eaten at.
3rd, the way people tend to talk in Minnesota is friendly and open, but a little guarded. Its called "MINNESOTA NICE". Again, almost overly friendly if you're from NYC, Philly, Boston even Chicago. More open and honest. That's why everyone talked "nicely". But in the conversations with the 2 girls at the strip club and the man shoveling snow, you see there was an unwillingness to be too forthright, or an inability, as they kept describing Carl as "kinda funny looking" with no specifics.
All those quirks and inside jokes were purposely put into the movie for grins.

I actually _empathise_ with Jerry Lundegaard.
My marriage had similarities. My wife's parents were relatively wealthy, but they NEVER put their hand in their pocket to help 'us'. They left it to me and my widowed mother to finance a home, and provide for the eventual family.
The only thing her father contributed was continual dripping poison to try and destroy the marriage.
So, I feel for Jerry. His constant obsession over money was to provide a standard of life for his pampered wife, that his job just couldn't provide. Hence, he had to practice hard sales tactics, and get loans that he could never hope to pay back. Oh, and he sought out a business deal that would have been lucrative, but his mean, greedy father-in-law stole it off him.
I don't believe Jerry wanted his wife dead, I just think he was a man under tremendous financial pressure who was no longer thinking straight.
    The moral of the story?
Don't get married! Be a feminist instead - because 'Sisters are doing it for themselves'!!
(Anyone remember that one? ...long, loooong time ago, that sentiment)

The investment meeting definitely is fascinating. My read is that Jerry's father in law and his business guy literally did not understand that Jerry was asking them for money for HIM to invest. It's not that they were trying to swindle him. It literally never occurred to them that he would just ask them to bankroll his investment. Of course, once they described back to Jerry what he was actually asking for, it's ridiculous! That is, unless Jerry had a great relationship with his father in law ... which is definitely NOT the case.

It's not a "true" true story. What I mean is, it's the exact story like this did not happen in total, but every little element is exactly like most crime happens in real life. Most criminals are stupid, they get stupid ideas (like kidnapping their wives), but then people misunderstand, things do not happen like you imagined, coz they never do, people get shot and die, people get shot, don't die and shoot back and so on and so forth.

We don't really find out why Jerry needed money so much that he came up with taking the ransom from his kidnapping plot. We know he was running a scam at the dealership getting money for cars that didn't exist, but that was probably just a short-term fix that he'd have to pay back the money on. From what we do know about Jerry, whatever he was doing probably wasn't legal. Or smart.

You've got to assume some things in the movie that happened to fill in the blanks.
    1. Jerry obviously got over his head in debt. Could be something as simple as a gambling addiction. Probably not drugs. We just don't know why he started embezzling $$ from his Father in laws dealership.
Jerry is an incompetent foch up, a regular loser, not a career criminal.
    2. The money scheme Jerry came up with was to take the auto loan company $$$ that lends money to the dealership so they can purchase more cars to sell. The loan company advances the $$$ for say 30 vehicles. Jerry as sales manager then needs to document which cars are securing that loan, ie which cars are on that loan by designating the VIN #s.
Jerry FAXED them FAKE hard to read VIN#s, which is why the loan guy kept calling Jerry to get him clear accurate #s. So yes, Jerry is defrauding the loan company/bank that lent the Dealership $ 1million on new cars to sell. Jerry is embezzling from his own dealership, and his own Father in Law.
    3. Since Jerry is a bumbling dumb foch, he then comes up with this insane plan to hire a few crooks to kidnap his wife, ask for a ransom of $1 million to cover that loan $$ he already spent somewhere. The dumb crooks get $40,000 of the $80,000 total Jerry is telling them he needs.
So you can tell right from the get go that these guys are all over their heads.
    4. For a second you think that Jerry has a legit investment opportunity in some parking lots. Maybe that is what he wants the loan $$ for, to pay for the investment. But he stupidly thinks the Father in law will just GIVE HIM $1 MILLION on his word he will simply pay him back. When Gustafson tells him how silly that is, all is left is to go through with the goofy kidnapping ruse.
Of course all this falls apart because circumstances occur, fate jumps in, a Domino effect is started, and things go wrong and are exacerbated with every decision, pulling in even random hunters driving by in the night and even a parking lot attendant that dares to ask for payment in thr garage.
So Jerry's bad bumbling decision making costs 7 lives if I counted that correctly.
One of the best DARK COMEDIES/MYSTERIES EVER MADE!!
AND YES, THEY WANT YOU TO FOLLOW THIS AS A TRUE STORY TO SHOW HOW REALISTIC THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED. THEY PUNKED THE AUDIENCE BECAUSE THEY WANTED YOUR ATTENTION.

    • @D.D.-ud9zt
      @D.D.-ud9zt 3 місяці тому

He doesn't have the personality of a big time gambling loser, and I've known a few, I suppose the screenwriters aren't familiar with how those people act though and that was the intention. Fraud or just trying to make a big deal either to impress the father in law or get out from under him makes more sense. The dumbest thing is the amount of money. It's too similar for what he wants for the parking lot. If I'm the dad, that's ringing off alarm bells. Probably why he wanted to bring the money himself.

I am pretty sure Jerry was trying to raise the money for this lot in Waizetta (spelling?). This is why he borrowed money against cars that didn't exist.
I think Jerry's father in law was harsh by just offering Jerry a finder's fee, but Jerry was also stupid in expecting them to invest $750,000 without getting a good (majority share) of the business.
This story was not true, but stupid stuff like this happens all the time sadly. Fortunately, most often, the perpetrators of the crime don't risk the lives of the loved ones intentionally and with little regard for them getting free as happened with poor Ms. Lundergaard.

The guy they pinned it on isn't the zodiac. He had a criminal history and wasn't a good guy, but he didn't match the physical descriptions in San Francisco, none of the prints ever matched him, and dna tests based on saliva on the stamps didn't match him either. The original guy that put the police onto him then said oh, he always would have someone lick stamps for him. He had a watch with the name zodiac and was a career criminal. Probably deserved a little harassment being as how short sentences were in the 70s, but the movie pinned it on the guy who wrote a book thought it was, not the police. It's still technically an open case, but most likely the guy who did it is dead or nearly so, most likely will never be solved.

Oh. You missed it. See, just now, when Carl showed the state trooper his wallet, there was a prominent cash note sticking out of it. He lives in a world where a criminal doesn't want to make very prominent ripples. He bribes law enforcement personnel in the hope that they will forget relatively _minor_ crimes, like a car not having its temporary tags. That's why he was saying everything more than once. He was offering the trooper a bribe.

One of my all-time favorite movies!
A couple of elements of the plot came from actual news stories: a guy who tried to scam GMAC with phony vehicle IDs, and a murderer who put his victim through a wood chipper. The rest is made up.
Frances McDormand (Marge) won the Oscar for best actress, and William H. Macy was nominated for best supporting actor. In my opinion, Macy should have won the award. He created a truly memorable (and awful) character.
Jerry Lundegaard is the biggest schmuck. Most movie villains are strong, or smart, or fearsome, but Jerry is a cowardly idiot.
Carl wasn't very bright, either. He made mistake after mistake, from not putting the tags on the car to getting himself killed over the car when he had $920,000 waiting for him.
The wood chipper used in the movie is now in the visitor's center in Fargo, North Dakota, with an artificial foot sticking out of it.
A lot of people don't get why the story with Mike Yanagita is in the movie. When Marge learns that Mike has lied to her, she questioned her own judgment and whether anyone else had lied to her. That's when she decided to interview Jerry again.
More Coen Brothers movies to watch:
    The Big Lebowski
    O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    True Grit
    Raising Arizona
    Blood Simple
    Miller's Crossing

Raising Arizona should be next on their list.

It's ingrained in my vocabulary. My Dad grew up in Eau Claire, and Wisconsinites have much of the same way of talking. My cousins from Milwaukee spoke very similar to us. The Coen Bros weren't making it up. They just tweaked it up.

He worked at his father's car dealership. He borrowed the money from a bank to pay for cars from an auto manufacturer. But the cats never existed. So, basically he stole money from the bank. His character was a f$ckup. So he either initially stole the money from the bank to feel like a big man. Or he wanted to invest in a deal but the parking lot deal would payout quick enough.

He's thinking he could just replace her, it doesn't work like that, and usually after the honeymoon phase, if even that long, they will become very resentful of you, nearly like, they blame you for the loved one dying.
