  • Cultural: #metoo movement continues to shape our national conversation. We are overdue on dealing with it from a scriptural point of view. Both the Christian and the American traditions have seen the value of stopping normal activities to observe a moment of silence ... or to lower a flag to half-staff ... or to issue a collective cry of lament ... in the face of significant crisis, turmoil, or loss. We believe that the stories of the women that are now being told are deserving of this pause to LISTEN, REFLECT, and CHANGE. The abuse of women is an abuse of power and has been going on since the fall of humankind- and it was never what God intended.

I am so incredibly thankful you have taken action to teach not only your congregation but everyone who received the link to view this sermon. So moving and greatly challenging in a great way! Personally after watching I was greatly challenged to do more to stand up to the problem.

Your choice to stand in solidarity with the women at Willow Creek and all the women, by withdrawing from hosting the GLS, and your willingness to speak truth about the issue, literally made me weep. I'm an Exvangelical, and hardly ever listen to sermons, but I listened to the entirety of this one. Thank you thank you thank you. I'm adding you to my List Of People Who Make It Possible For Me To Imagine Myself A Christian.

      Benjamin (and Grace Church),
I can see your point and purpose. You appear to be sincere about churches standing in solidarity against abuse.
Nevertheless, GLS is the baby in the bathwater.
The tactic of boycotting paints a lot of people and effort with the same brush in order to shame an individual (and perhaps a few others) in part to say “I am not one of those.” However, you and I are each one of those. We need to recognize we are all capable of such. We need to stand together but not in a way that distinguishes us as incapable. (Matt. 5:28)
I prefer a different approach to national dialogue rather than accepting the petty, power-based, win-lose parameters of identity politics. "In fighting the dragon, take care lest you become the dragon."
All megachurches have a complex relationship with power, hierarchy, capitalism, and the world. Cherrypicking this issue risks appearing ignorant of this complex relationship and smacks of bandwagon sanctimony. Further, this kind of abandonment of flawed institutions is the same sad story that baby-boomers have been telling since they left mainline churches to start megachurches in the first place. Better to fight for renewal against the enemy (which is us) than to claim an us-vs-them higher ground.
There’s too much darkness to curse in the world. Better to be a light.
      Sincerely, Tim Filston

I have shared with all in my circle, not one has NOT been touched and moved! Many cried! They all understand, and those previously questioning the women harassed by Bill Hybels get it!

May I cautiously ask you, is it confirmed that women have been harassed by Bill or is it not rather more accusations at that point?

Markus Eichler How many do YOU need before the experiences of these women, some of them female spiritual Titans of Evangelicalism, are taken seriously. I have had the blessing of being taught by a few of these women. These are NOT dysfunctional shrills as far too many like to label ALL women who dare to use their voice to tell their stories of inappropriate behaviors and inappropriate expectations of SOME spiritual bent men in power positions. How many women are still silent, living with the shame of having perhaps gone there with BH?

Markus Eichler And woe to those in leadership at Willow who have made the “business” decisions to NOT allow an independent, third party, non Willow investigation into this matter. These folk have tossed Jesus out on Barrington, Algonquin, or Mundhank Road.

Markus Eichler And I will finally add that for seventeen years I sat under the leadership of BH and over the years this Man of God has spoken mightily into my life, but I am NOT one of those into hero worship and ascribing god status to fellow human beings. BH is a human man capable of sin just like me and you.
If this thing is to be cleared, allow the investigation to proceed, until that time, or until God announces times up, I will stand and believe this group of Women of God, some of whom had more to lose breaking their silence.
Abuse, begets abuse, begets abuse and dysfunction! Willow is dysfunctional.

I have read accounts of the situation online but don't know all the details. I would like to comment though that I don't know why all male pastors don't follow the Billy Graham rule to avoid any appearance of evil and also eliminate false accusations (I don't think this applies to this situation).
