    You should probably mention the most important (and sometimes the most costly and difficult to get) thing you need - permit. Otherwise you're up for very unpleasant surprise

      In the US there is an unlicensed cell phone band called CBRS(Citizen Broadband Radio Service).
      This device can use that spectrum license free, if the don’t exceed certain power requirements.

    Thanks for all the questions and comments! To answer some of the more common questions:
    This current version is LTE, and is compatible with almost all cell phones today. The range of this device is 1km, while wifi has a range of 100m max.
    The tower node can be configured for any LTE frequency. In the US we use CBRS, which the FCC has provisioned to enable shared unlicensed spectrum. In other countries we work with the regulator or partner organizations to obtain spectrum licenses.
    Building this in a park is an illustration of how easy this solution is to deploy. If this were to be set up in a park in the US, it would be done by the park itself. It would make sense in a larger park with poor cell coverage, which needs an easy way to make sure their facilities, rangers, wildlife cameras, and sensors stay connected.
    Ukama’s product is aimed at enabling people to build networks in places with nonexistent or poor wireless internet. Currently we’re working on a project in the DRC using fiber and satellite backhaul.
    The other key customers for Ukama are private networks that need to cover a larger area than wifi and want the security of SIM-based authentication. This could be sensor/IoT deployments in farms, push to talk networks in ports, disaster response situations, etc.
    For the solar people-you’re right that panel is enough to power the Ukama equipment on a sunny day, but couldn’t handle the 1st gen Starlink

      So my big question is if you're using this to add coverage to the larger connectivity of cell service, what's the security like? Just as encrypted as any other cell tower? Or is there a plausible possibility someone could syphon the incoming and outgoing data

      @@alclay8689 Also, it is connected to actual telephony networks? I see it has Internet connection. So it provides internet. But no mention of telephony. Sure, there is voice over IP but that is something else.

      Permit issues probably. Some asshole in an office would say it disrupts the signal from other towers so they need a permit or some other bs when its just that they dont want people to be free from paying the corporations.

      You can't just go build stuff at public parks without permission. It's not your property. Also, there are privacy concerns. How do I know the person who built this isn't snooping on my calls and stealing my data? At least with the carrier's towers I know they are, but with this thing there's no telling. 😁

    A cellphone tower is surprisingly cheap these days. But wasn't there something called FCC who hands out cellphone frequencies?
    Or were you using the ISM bands.
    Wouldn't want to do that and then be shut down bebthe FCC and hit with juicy fine.

    Freethink, this is a little misleading. You are not powering that Starlink Gen 1 Dishy and associated cell equipment off of what looks to be a 100-150w solar panel. Where are the 1KW solar array and batteries?

    • @NickFromHardReset
      @NickFromHardReset Рік тому +2

      That’s true! We only show one panel because we were trying to fit everything on screen. The voltage requirements would mean about 4 panels were needed. (But there is a battery power station there, it’s just hard to see!)

    So all the people logging into my cell phone Tower and Cooling over it will use the flat rate from my SIM card? And how do I bill them for the usage - or is it local call only?

    • @NickFromHardReset
      @NickFromHardReset Рік тому

      As I recall, this is all dependent on how you set it up - you can make it public for people with roaming enabled to use your network- but getting reimbursed for them using your network might be more complicated than the tech side of things.
      You’d need to connect these to existing telephone networks if you want to do more than local calling, which is doable, but most folks will likely use this for data only connections.
