This scene always sealed in the fact of how mortal Batman was, and how small slip ups like him investigating the phantom devolved into this whole scene. He had an entire police precinct surround him, almost blow him up, and he just barely makes it out with his identity and health still intact. Moreover, the music and small cutscenes that are very comic book-like in thier frames, really created the tension in this scene as a child. Best Batman movie ever.
It’s wild that Gotham police suddenly go from the most incompetent police department in fiction to a lethal police force as soon as they start going after Bruce and Terry when they’re Batman.
My step-grandfather for me. And I know he wasn't as interested as I was, but I'll never forget that he DIDN'T fall asleep during this. Even after, he had questions 😂 and I loved every moment of it. 💯
RIP Kevin Conroy. This is one of the most intense scenes ever put in a Batman film. I really prefer this down to earth, human Batman who can be cornered and vulnerable but still manage to win over an invincible Bat God.
There was a couple of episodes where the GCPD stop the bad guys. There also was a Superman episode where the Metropolis police are ridiculed that the only one who can do anything is Superman. Suddenly Superman showed up and said it was actually Detective Turpin who saved his life from Kanto.

This scene proves how crucial of an ally Jim Gordon is to Batman. Batman managed to get out by the skin of his teeth, now imagine how things would have been had Gordon lead the chase along with the full force of the Gotham Police Department. Imo if Gordon wanted to he could apprehend Batman, but he trusts him enough to work with him.

@@williamsundesten4327 Continuity never really mattered in the Tim Verse. In fact, there’s still debate on whether the tie in comics are considered canon to the show.
This movie was the truest representation of what Batman originally was. Batman after all, to his core, was a detective. He battled crime, did not kill, and used his skills and wits to win the day.

This scene was so intense and really showed you that the police were definitely out to get Batman, it was one of those rare times that showed how dangerously close he was to having his secret identity exposed especially when he loses his cape and cowl after getting almost blown up, the moment where you see Batman limping down the alleyway unmasked with the police right behind him while the operatic music plays really had you on the edge of your seat. What an epic DC animated movie Batman Mask Of The Phantasm was and almost 3 decades later, it still remains an all time classic. 1:29 a very clear clue that the person in the costume is a female from the way Phantasm delivers the kick to Batman
I haven't watched this movie in about 15 years or so. Maybe longer. But the moment I saw that kick, everything about the movie come flooding back. What a fantastic fucking film. I'm sure I still have it on VHS

Kevin Conroy is the best 😢
Andrea went from fighting Batman after a failed assassination to rescuing him a few minutes later
She wasn't targeting him. At that point, Batman had no clue who the Phantasm was, so he figured he could trust her.
Either way Bruce was never the target for her. The target was the mob for her. She just went about it in revenge. Not Bruce/batman.

The one time the GCPD is actually competent...
And it’s not even against a bad guy.
They actually were not if they knew Batman wasn’t the enemy
The police in superheroe movies is only competent against good guys.

With the advancement and medium of animation changing, it's not likely he'll be able to do so. And don't call him Shirley.
Batman isn't a vigilante, an "eccentric contractor".
One of the best things about the Joker is how he subverts everybody's expectations.
This movie scared the shit out of me when I was little.

Really hard to pay your respects to Kevin Conroy when most Batman TAS vids got COPPA'd. Even though today's kids ain't watching this.
Now, why aren't the Gotham PD half this competent when trying to subdue The Joker? Or Two-Face?
I like that they changed the grappling hook shot sound for the movie.
