SpeedPlay pedals allow your heels to float freely, taking pressure off of your knees to stay in one straight line, permitting them to follow their natural course through the pedal stroke. Moving over to SpeedPlay pedals fixed my cycling knee problem.

If the stance width is wrong it wont help. You will feel better with more float but only for a couple of miles.
