Building a Warmoth Project with My Dad in the Time of COVID 19

  • My Dad doesn't play guitar, but he loves woodworking projects. After watching some of my build videos he came up with the idea of doing a father/son project. We're not young men and have health issues that make travel difficult even before the COVID outbreak. However, we figured out a way to make it work. We're using a body and neck from Warmoth, Wudtone finishing kit from byoguitar.com, and hardware from Warmoth, Stewmac, and Guitarfetish.
This is a long video, so here are links to some specific segments:
    Dad's shop video 1:25
    Unboxing the finished body 8:04
    Reed's shop video 11:26
    Conclusion and sounds 41:23

Just placed an order the other day for a Velocity body. It reminds me of a Wolfgang/Axis style. I went with Roasted Swamp Ash, three single coil, vol tone and 5 way. Neck is a warhead headstock based off of the Peavey Wolfgang necks. Looking forward to it.

That build came out awesome. I was really surprised with the GFS Trons, sounds like you could nail Tom Petty songs on that guitar very easily. You’re so fortunate to still have your dad in your life at your age 😎and that you can share a project like that. I’m in my fifties also and lost all my parents way too soon. Keep up the great videos !

What a wonderful project, so nice that you got to it that with your Dad, even remotely.
Love the finish on the body and it sounded great when you plugged it in too! Congratulations to you and your Dad.

It looks even better in person. Video experts would probably tweak the color timing of the video to get a more accurate color representation, but I don't know how to do that. :)

When mounting a PUP, an easy trick for those springs is to use a gator clip! to stop the spring, no fumbling around.

    No shielding in the cavity?

I did not shield the cavity. I usually don't when building guitars with humbuckers. If I were playing at louder volumes it would probably make a bigger difference.

What is the brand and color of stain you used?

We used a "Wudtone" finishing kit - I believe Carmine Red with gold highlights. You can buy them from Build Your Own Guitar: www.byoguitar.com/Guitar_Kits/Accessories-plus-Supplies/Finishing-Supplies/Wudtone-Finishes/Body-Finishing-Kits.aspx. It's not the cheapest way to do it, but it includes both color and top coat and I've been really impressed with the way the finish turns out.
