This episode encapsulates everything that made Siskel and Ebert so compelling. They could praise small cinematic miracles like "Say Anything" and absolutely destroy tripe like "She's Out Of Control" in a ten minute span.

This is a really wonderful episode that encapsulates everything good about the show and also highlights a strong pre-summer period at the movies in 1989. Here we have a strong disagreement among the critics, citing of a movie rule that was broken, reviews of what would become known as one of the best and worst movies of the year, and at least two movies still remembered as significant if not classics today. We also have movies with some up-and-coming stars who would get much bigger later and movies with some stars who were on their way down.
@@rvegas81 I think it's all about her looks now. But the story would've worked better with Pete reuniting with someone we already knew, not a new girl. Even more shameful they killed Meg Ryan off. Say Anything is an amazing film that has aged very well. I never minded the silly, raunchy teen flicks because they can be quite funny, but SA is such a realistic view of the way young people act in situations of love, heartbreak and anxiety.
I related to Say Anything. It starts off with the characters graduating from High School & so did i that year in 1989. I did see it in a theater in Seattle where it was also filmed. I remember writer/Director Cameron Crowe said back then that Say Anything was his apology to teenagers for writing Fast Times.
This is an all-time classic episode. Siskel's existential crisis after seeing She's Out of Control is one of the most memorable moments the show ever had. He was dead wrong about Field of Dreams, though. It seems like he didn't like the movie simply because it wasn't Bull Durham, even though it was trying to be a completely different movie.
I love how Cusack whips out names from the then-new idea of kickboxing*, and goes on to have Benny Urquidez play opposite him in, 'Gross Pointe Blank.' Just something surprisingly authentic about that. *And he was right. That MMA thing really took off. If only he was more of a grappler/Judo guy..
She's Out of Control must have been a REAL stinker. Siskel said it was one the worst experiences of his career and made him contemplate quitting his job, and Ebert talked about it being "less than nothing" that "robbed life" from him. "A wrong" done to them, "which could never be righted." Wowee.
The order they review movies is always interesting. Usually the lead movie is the one that's considered the week's Big Release. Here forgotten Winter People gets the nod over future classics Field Of Dreams and Say Anything. There's another one where Die Hard is like the last movie they review.
The genius of Field of Dreams is that after all that happened, what it really was about was Costner's character realizing that it was all about having another chance with his dad. Amazing that S&E completely missed that.
Not considered major releases at first. Costner wasn't quite a superstar yet--this movie made him one--and this was a quaint baseball fantasy. Say Anything---Cameron Crowe had never directed a hit movie, John Cusack and Ione Skye were not big stars at the time.
@@branagain Even thought that movie was a hit I don't remember it really turning Costner into a household name or anything. Maybe because Connery and De Niro really have the much meatier roles in that.

Siskel and Ebert getting pissed off about "She's Out of Control", to me, just makes the movie even funnier. Especially the Beach sequence where Tony Danza is looking at everyone in a close up slow motion. :))) The film is not that bad.
Honestly I think Gene should have gave Field of Dreams another look it was and still is a magical and strong spirited story for all ages. I agree with Roger
Odd that Siskel and Ebert both focus on the baseball aspect of the story as if that's what it's about, rather than the story of a man reconciling with his father, with baseball merely as a backdrop. If it's just a baseball movie, then Rocky is just a boxing movie.
