- Sorting out several issues with old home entertainment system console stereo record player. This thing has it all, bad tubes, bad switches, bad capacitors, alignment issues, bad stylus, bad tube sockets, smoke and even Mrs Miller and Backstreet Boys!

Considering that ancient linear wall wart and that huge barrel connector; I think that a portable CD player was the thing using that AUX input.

It has a datecode of '94 on it apparently, and it also looks that way. Late 80s to early 00s.

I'm not sure I mentioned this before, but the quality of your voice recording in your videos is particularly clear and assists my rather poor quality hearing to catch every word with clarity. I'm not certain that it's intentional, but it's very much appreciated.
I have a hunch that this situation exists because almost all commercial voice-work NOW DAYS is by females FOR SOME STRANGE REASON. Pure sexism that for any other group would be a cancellable offense. Their voices are pretty and mellifluous but strong and clear they’re not. Advertisers, producers, and directors should really reconsider this strategy and go back to the completely audible ABOVE ALL CLEAR voices of classic-radiomen and their warm, “brown”-tones, a la Sir Roger Moore

My 84 YO aunt has a very similar looking Magnavox but with a B/W TV included. I believe it (the TV) has one of those tuning fork remotes too.
I remember some cousins connected up a early video game to it in the mid 1980s one holiday gathering. TV worked but was not very bright. Has a fairly rounded screen as I recall.
Aunt mentioned to me probably 10yrs ago that the record player had quit and she could not play xmas records on it anymore. It was still in her house the last time I was there in 2021.
I've always suspected she got it 2nd hand someplace. My earliest memories of it are from the mid 1970s.

That is actually a very nice amplifier. David Gillespie posted a thread over on AudioKarma called "More Fun with Magnavox: The 9300 Series." He modifies that exact amplifier with minimal effort and effectively makes it "HiFi" (at least as HiFi as tubes can be.) I have one of those amps myself, and am currently building a second one from scratch. They sound very nice. That is an awesome find! NOT TRASH!
This is a premium model. The Imperial line was only sold through Magnavox franchised dealers. You couldn't get this in a department store where the regular line was sold.
Thankful you make these videos, I can only imagine the trouble but the work you go through to bring us this content, it is appreciated. Some of these old beasts must be frustrating, but it's a pleasure to watch your work.

My mom has a 1978 Magnavox (last year they made consoles) never serviced everything still works except the 8 track deck (needs belt) cabinet is still in excellent condition too.
All your videos are really enjoyable but this one in particular was really great fun to watch, put it on and thought i'd watch a little and go get a drink and come back and watch the rest but ended up sitting down and watching it all.
I think even today if that were all in running order with proper crossovers and some decent music fed into it it would still blow people away, especially the younger kids who have never heard music played on anything larger than a phone speaker before.
I'd guess it was a portable CD player hooked up (badly) to the aux.. I had something similar 25 years ago now.. doesn't seem that long!
10-12 watts per channel in PP maybe? Never did get to see the underside of the amp/psu, wonder what the other side of that tuner plug looked like.. probably a rats nest of wires..do you think its probably a cathode bypass capacitor shorted / bad plate resistor to the output tubes causing them to redplate?
finally that MPX unit really well made.. I recognized your comment about tubes with FM stereo being unreliable.. seen a lot of philco stuff that seemed to go out of alignment just by breathing on the leads!

The bass Magnavox had was best among all the popular brand consoles at the time.
While I miss the CRT work, this unstraight troubleshooting by our unrestrained host was wonderful walk down memories lane. My parents owned the Maggie model above this edition. In fact, the top early 1960s stereo furniture by Magnavox. It has FM tuning eye, VIVIVIVIbrasonic, center bass woofer 15", L R 8" mid-range, LR 1" tweeter, changer, etc. Here is the kicker: my brother kept it, original tubes, resistors, and caps. Except for the dirty pots, it operates perfectly...60 freaking years later. The problem is not with corporate WOKE which is just PR. The problem is that nothing is done for decades any more. It is all short side leadership in every sector. We don't build em this way.
When I see the woke crap these days the more I wish the world would go back to a more sensible decade if all else rather be in a different universe as that woke crap is just so evil once one does some research.
I recently put an order in with Electronic Goldmine out of Arizona, and as part of that order I included one of their gold-pak capacitor bulk box. It contained about 40 of that style capacitors in the box of around 1000 caps. I had never seen one like that before. It sure resupplied me with caps, I should sort and sell a few hundred of the electrolytic in 4.7 to 470 most brand name caps at various voltages as my bin is overflowing with many of them. Good outfit for their large capacitor surprise packages.
OK I sucked at TVs but I still do these consoles in my sleep blindfolded and can say that while you went more than a bit roundiebout you got it basically right and accomplished the task at hand. It was tons of fun to watch while I wasn't screaming at the screen.😋🤣
We in a production environment wouldn't waste any time on old caps but you know that with TVs. I just wish 2022 technology allowed me to demo you how we do FM now. It really is a jaw dropping experience to go from caps, coils, resistors and tubes/transistors to software defined radio with no parts at all but a pre-existing PC. and a cheap USB dongle.
Also I didn't even know that rpm phone app existed. I've been on the strobe disc. I will use the app going forward. Thank you fine sir. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
I did enjoy doing CRT setups back in the day but the business aspect and that 40KV thingie (60KV if you include the Zeniths with the neck blown off the bulb from the bad cap) kind of kept me from getting all pro with it.
I harvested several sets of dynamic horn tweeters from Magnavox consoles tossed curbside decades ago. I still use a pair in my setup every day. I tried several crossover values to find happy ears. Quality Japanese horns....
As a trained electronics engineer with more than 34 years of experience, my best guess is that this thing is pretty much torko-twinkulated.
I think it is just the nagley valve that isn't combobulating in sync with the johnson rod...

Thanks to this video I learned. Well let me just say, I just picked up a 1962 magnavox theatre (27 pict. tube)no uhf/ am/fm tuner/phono
Model (1MP422M). But it has close to the same amp and tuner ( except my am/fm tuner has a spot to turn the tv off and on. speakers have the same horns pointing forward, big woofers pointingat the ends of cabinet, same as that one. But I found out it's tough to get the Sams photofact for Magnav. consoles. I called one guy selling them Steve, he said take out the tuner, and take close up picture of it, and give him a drawing with the tube location and names and he'll take a couple of days & try and come up with the Sams. I just got it, seeing how it was all
tube I hoped, th model # wasn't given in the add just said $100 bucks come and bring a truck. The "sun", must have been hitting the back of the tv for years as the model #paper was very hard to read I corrected 1 letter I had off from another person selling a simular unit that the paper tag wasn't bleached out. He just had sereis 1 & I have sereis 3. But I've only had It for less than 3 days. I think the tubes that said 62
were correct. I think they, went solid state in 1963. My tubes (high hrs set) are caked with dust, So I haven't read amything yet. But I looked at that metal inpression stamp No. on the multiplex board it matches your Number, maybe just a part No. But I didn't know what board that was or what It did. Thks for that informative part , about the multiplex and what it's job is. And how the tuner has special plugs and everything just will plug in.The only way to talk the wife into me, getting this, ( being as big and heavy as it is) was that it's my christmas present for 2023, except she did let me get a tube tester and Beltron CRT Tester Restorer With Dandy-Dapter Universal Adapter CA-28

The FCC authorized FM stereo broadcasting about two years before this console came off the assembly line.

RCA developed stereophonic sound in around 1958 for phonographs. That's probably what that patent is referring to. These Magnavox consoles are great consoles. Very well built, as you pointed out. And they can really sound great when they are working correctly. By the end I was practically screaming at the screen for you to replace caps in that power chassis. Man, this thing could still be great. Get in there and knock those coupling caps out and fix that oscillation too.
It's all disc. There was no bias from wakey capacitors I checked that . It probably needs some New electrolytic but whoever adopts it can do that

2:06 Never seen one of those before. On this side of the pond our 45s always had the same size spindle hole as LPs; we fitted centre pieces to records which had been "punched out" for juke-boxes, or the (rare at the time, at least for me) imported records.
Also it'd be nice to see a follow-up .. and see what cooked! Hope someone will take this on. I know I would if distance (and space) weren't an issue.
Magnavox console model 1ST659A from 1963 . For starters might need to use half a can of DeOxit on those switches,
tube sockets, terminal contacts, and pots! It's an all uphill battle on that basket case after that. Your analysis of how the whole thing works is a great
teaching experience for the viewer Shango.

"It works, it only needs a tube and a new needle!" 😄 I actually saw this statement in a FB Marketplace Ad for an old stereo console, a while back.
I have a 1954 Zenith console Am Fm with cobramatic turntable that my great uncle bought new. He knew how much I liked it and I inherited when he passed in 1994 at 100! It works absolutely fantastic, the cabinet is very nice, I'm sure he never had a restoration on it, so I belive its all original, I checked all the tubes in it when I got it, they are all Zenith, except for 1. That one is a GE. in the 28 years I've used It, its needed nothing, it just always works!
As usual your videos are very entertaining. The best part of this unit is the amplifier and the speakers. If you work to pull out that amplifier and recap it you would have a very nice amp there. Back in the day these units sounded fantastic. About 35 years ago I was able to drag one home that was found in the street but it was much larger and had the television in it. The CRT was bad in the TV so actually all I did was parted it out the amp the turntable the speakers and the rest went in the trash.
The power amp section sounds better than Dynaco!
I really liked how at the end you imagined what it could have been like listening to this thing for the first time in 1963. The audio experience was cutting edge indeed. Also, did they hear the news of Kennedy's assassination on it? How many psychedlic Beatles 45s were spun on that adapter in 1964? I saw a house probably built in the 1950s like the one i grew up in that was sold about 10 years ago, sealed up and tirn down for a mega center. I passed it all the time and wondered how many Christmases that family shared, who were they, what must the wallpaper look like.
That must have been a fantastic time to grow up in with a unit like that, with the music that came out at the time as well being so fantastic- in full dimensional stereo!!

I'm surprised you had so many issues with this one, Magnavox tube gear is pretty robust. I'll bet the smoke at the end was from leaking paper coupling caps. Those wafer tube sockets were garbage, and GE used a ton of them in their radios. In fact, there are certain models where GE used them with a 50C5 output---the heat from the tube would bake the socket so bad that it would crack and short between pins. And I had one break into 4 pieces and fall through the chassis when I tried to reinsert the tube in the socket

A shame for sure that most folks today wouldn't even donate this piece.....except to the trash bin. From a time of when you had to know what you were working on, not just turn it on and off to troubleshoot and replace a board or two or check software. Yes there seems like lots of guys on the interweb that do these sort of repairs or have this equipment as a hobby but doesn't compare to the millions of specialists who have since passed on. I hope you find a home for that stereo for sure.

Analog tube amplifiers have that warm rich sound. With the tube amplifier I see that it doesnt have to have a high wattage rating to play loudly. Magnavox used the 1000 hertz exponential horns in most of their consoles I love them! When Magnavox went to solid state amplification they used Germanium transistors which closely replicates the tube sound! I have a 1500 amplifier that is rated at 75 watts per channel IHF and 50 watts per channel RMS I understand their power ratings were conservative as some tests have revealed my amp was showing more like 67 watts per channel. This amp is a MOS FET RF amp.The power transformer is huge! Their are heat sinks in the back also. i need the pots cleaned and pilot lights replaced and I think I will be alright.Possibly recapping also.Magnavox made good sounding stereos,, they made some good components and then Phillips bought them out.Some people always bash Magnavox its a quality product line overall.
when I was a kid my family had one of these. I remember playing some old 45's and my Dad had some 33's
This is a transitional cabinet design. It was used for a few years, on both the later tube models, and the early Astro-Sonics. I have a tube version of this console, with a multiplex, I would love to go to a new home, here in New Mexico. My cabinet is in better shape, too.
Magnavox and Stromberg Carlson were the console stereos of choice when I was a kid back in the 60's, brings back good memories.
I have an Astro-Sonic combo unit from 1966 with the TV, record player, and it has a wireless remote control. The radio works decent, the record player is missing, (long story) the TV part hasn't worked since the early 70's. I have recapped a little bit on the radio chassis and the crossover and I got it sounding pretty good. This thing gets loud and will shake the room and I am amazed on how well these beasts were built. Unfortunately I lost interest in this thing about 8 years ago and now it's just a big piece of furniture.
From what I could tell, it had a good sound.

Another great video, that set would’ve been amazing back then especially the stereo separation on fm broadcast also when working with a good needle those magnavox record players are really good, I still occasionally use my magnavox counsel but it’s a lot newer and transistor powered but still has a good sound, I do need to take out my chassis sometime and clean the pots and fix the loudness switch so it will sound right

You are correct about Zenith having invented the FM multiplex system we use to this day. But knowing RCA, and its penchant for glomming onto and stealing other's credit, it doesn't surprise the label information. You pulled pretty good performance from that tired old girl. My understanding was that Zenith and somebody else, maybe GE or Maggotbox came out with systems that were so close to identical that the FCC authorized both and let broadcasters pick one as they both worked on all receivers. Anyway this mid side technique was used for many things including the CD4 Quadradisc and analog NTSC stereo (with DBX added to the L-R). There are even vestiges of it in the NTSC color broadcast specification. It was just how you did it in analog. Now I do analog FM stereo both RX and TX in Python.

That audio output stage looked beauriful. Would be a nice guitar amp project if nothing else. Of course a full restoration is the only morally acceptable option. But those two output transformers look so cute...
The FM multiplex standard chosen by the FCC is actually a combination of the GE and Zenith systems which were very similar. The main advantage of these systems over the competing Crosby system was the preservation of the 67 kHz SCA subcarrier which was an additional source of revenue for the FM stations. The chosen GE-Zenith system actually degraded overall S/N ratio in stereo for this reason...
Yes! It really would have been interesting if the Crosby system could have been the one to be chosen, there would have been fewer problems with "fringe level" FM signals degrading the stereo so quickly.
@@oldradiotvsc9836 yep, the Crosby system used an 50 kHz frequency modulated subcarrier versus a 38 kHz amplitude modulated one on the GE/Zenith system. This gave it superior stereo performance in fringe areas.
Do you know what would be the ultimate? To recreate a complete Crosby system with transmitter and receiver, using modern electronics to see how good the system really was..

Yes i still us a i pod ( ipod classic 160 gb ) it's great and have a docking stations at home and with the usb cable can use to plug into the car radio in my car and also the caravan. No more cassette tape CD's or even minidisk. All are limited to play time. I have around 60 Gb of music and play the music on random. Works forme and realy has been a god sent !! There are lits now that you can replace the hard drive with a solid state memory.

I really like 👍 this lengthy resurrection (video). Those square speaker 🔊 magnets 🧲 are interesting 🧐. “Cracklepony Mastercharge”, for the crackling sounds. I think “IPod”, or whichever ya said, has become obsolete technology. I wouldn’t want to put Bluetooth and everything into this, anyway, because it’s destroying the originality of this set. had one of these all the time growing up, with the TV in the middle and angled satellite speakers as well~ was so awesome could pile on 7 LPs and play table tennis~ bout the time I was born in 65 till 1980 when the roof leaked and everything was rotted...in winter....still Ken the Engineer (bout like chris too you) pulled it apart and continued to use this as the Ping-pong amplifier
Those 6BQ5 tubes I believe are Magnavox branded Telefunken tubes. Quite valuable. If you have a matched set of four that are all good, you're in the hundreds of $ for the set of those. You nailed it that the amp is worth way more than the console as a whole.
The amp isn't worth that much but, you're right, the tubes, if Telefunken, are worth at least $150-$200 for a quad used.

It's funny whenever you have the signal generator going the UA-cam Auto subtitles say (applause).
I've got a very similar model. I had a heck of a time trying to find service information for it, the only thing I could find was a Sam's for the tuner. Turned out the power choke must have shorted a few turns and the plate voltages were around 300 instead of the 245, which was causing the 6BQ5s to red plate. Added a resistor (okay, a 40 watt light bulb) which brought it back down.
I brought similar unit as used in 1974 from fellow student at school for $80.00. The unit has similar FM modulation unit connected with cable. I took the tube to Radio Shack for testing and replaced the tube. When power on it blew the fuse. I tried to repair it myself and unsuccessful. My portents thrown it away during clean up.
These have a cathode bias circuit. If you ran into red plating you may have a shorted or leaking bypass cap on the cathode circuit of the 6BQ5 tubes or a leaking coupling cap to the 6BQ5 tubes. I would be sure and check those out if you haven't already done that.

In America usually the 3rd most expensive item in a family's home was the console player. 1st was the house, 2nd was the car and 3rd the console. TV's were a close 4th I guess.
Talk about a proverbial arm wrestle to the very end. She certainly needs heaps of money and patience to perform a Lazarus resurrection.

Shango its amazing to think that these old radiograms only output about 3.5watts a channel yet were very loud, their speakers although were paper cones were very efficient over 110db/w some of them, today its the other way around we have stupidly overpowered amplifiers with crap speakers about 86db/w efficiency, unfortunately paper cone drivers arent really any good for high power amps as they have the "oilcan" effect when turned up loud, basically the paper collapses like pushing in a coke can. you need aluminium drivers for high power and lots of bass.
Should be quite a bit more than that with push pull 6BQ5 tubes (or EL84 valves).
@@westelaudio943 3.5w pc at 16ohm so about 6w a channel at 8ohm, but with high efficiency speakers like this it will sound more like 15w pc
@@westelaudio943 pretty well understood to be 10 to 15 watts on push-pull. It's more than 3.5 I owned one in the 1980's and loved it. It was clearer and louder than my STA-52B at 12 or 16 WPC.

Tube wattage is independent of speaker impedance if you are using the right transformer/taps.
Just because they overplayed BSB at your high-school prom shouldn't be the _only_ reason to hate them... :)
We had a 1962 Motorola console, and there was a switch position for FM stereo, but you had to pay extra to have a decoder installed. My understanding, many years later, was that the first couple of years of FM stereo, the FCC did not dictate the codex standard for the United States.
Can't wait for part 2 of this where you flip it over and we find out what burned.

Excellent video! I have this exact model and have started restoring it, including full recap, and want to get back to revisiting it, as it still has some remaining problems including too much 60 Hz hum which might be shielding or grounding issues somewhere. Mine also has crossover cap issues where one side has some treble and the other side has none at all out of the horns. I had two multiplex adapters for it and one worked and the other is quiet. I wonder if that 4 MFD cap in the quiet one is bad like on this one! I had to stop working on mine when I had people wanting me to repair other radios for them.
Yeah, I got one of these. Restored. Physically clean everything first. Remove oxide. No, that unit you have is older than the Astro-Sonic that came out as a transistor unit the following year.. Phonograph- Yup, the screws are screwed down when in use. Replace the capacitors, the phono cables, not the cartridge, but yes, replace the needle. Someone took your knobs and gave you crudy ones. Run in "AUX" for iPOD. The capacitors are so old they are acting like resistors. Replace all electrolytic capacitors first.
Several others that work on these mentioned that Sams doesn't list Magnavox by model number. There are far too many. You use the chassis number to get the correct Sams.
Those tweeter horns are fantastic. Some of the early ones were Electro-Voice. Those might be EV's. Mine had solid black metal magnet caps.
What happened after the smoke? Did you ever bother to find out? I learned alot about Multiplexers and fibre board tube sockets as garbage. I think I'll never have the eqpt like a tube tester or a scope. I have some skills and a VM, Capacitor tester and a few light bulbs from 60w to 300w. I don't have a Variac. Recently I came across an old bakelite radio but the price was $80. I'd never spend that kind of money on a project I know I'm going to sink money into. The things I've learned from you, my rudimentary training in HS in 1971 and UA-cam to help me understand the mechanics of circuits and devices, I feel confident to try repairing electronics as a hobby if ever I could afford it. To me your videos are priceless.
I was curious if you are still repairing stereo units? I have a 1964-67 Magnavox Astro Sonic record console. I am wondering if it could use a nice TLC as you put it. Records play well, but some of the control knobs are a little staticy. Any help is appreciated.

You had the wires carrying the audio into the amp laying right on that output tube that was oscillating. Maybe the high voltage swing from the plate was capacitively coupling back into the input wires causing the oscillation. Could be nothing wrong with the amp itself but just the wires need to be repositioned.
This unit is very expensive unit in 1963! My parents tried to buy it used and it cost close to $400.00! I saw similar unit sold in furniture store in Philadelphia for $500.00 cash and with installment payment weekly payment plan with down payment with 23% interests rate, the payment still over than $8.00 per week back in 1972. The new car payment was $100.00 a month and full coverage insurance that about $650.00 per year for clean record driver.
