It's a beautiful song - and it does support the troops - not as soldiers - but as people. It's always been rich mens wars and poor men's fight. Nice to hear the voices of the poor once in a while. Bravo Mr. Waits.

It makes me sad that if I tried to show this to some of my friends, they just wouldn't get it. They'd probably go off on how his voice sounds. Personally, I'd rather listen to Dylan and Waits than someone who can "sing" in the conventional sense of the word. After all, it's like Sam Cooke said, (I paraphrase) "It's not about how nice the voice sounds. It's about whether or not you believe the voice is telling the truth." Who's with me?

Tom is a musician's musician. He has been at the foundation of popular music with influence since the early 1980's, though most do not know who he is. The earth will tremor around the globe when his soul passes but most people will go day to day without observation. Only the lucky few of the human race will ever truly know and love Tom Waits. Tom Waits is possibly the greatest living icon right now as I type this but how can that be if nobody knows who he is? He's getting old. He's such a crumbling beauty. Awe...there is nothing wrong with Tom Waits that a hundred dollars couldn't fix.

As a Marine Corps Vietnam combat vet, I concur with all the comments, but would like to add, even at this late date, that the day after tomorrow, for some, never comes. RIP Marine Corps Lt. John Bobo, MOH & Cpl. Gerald DeMunda. Went to high school with both (Bishop Duffy H.S. Niagara Falls, NY) and miss them both terribly. For me, this song evokes their memory and my empathy for their families, who will FOREVER wait for the day after tomorrow. Thanks, Tom.

"What I miss you won't believe.., shoveling snow and raking leaves."
Beautiful and so ...it's what all the troops must feel at times. I know my cousins can relate.
As to the cheering during the show... it is a sign of more than appreciation, but understanding and connection.
I second the "different cultures, different ways" comment but I would put money on the fact that Mr. Waits was happy to hear it.

I've been a Tom Waits fan since the beginning of his career, and I can name numerous songs of his that have brought me to tears. This is definitely one of them. So moving, so touching, so powerful. Mr. Waits is one of the most versatile and important musicians of our time. I love all of his styles and musical facets equally, including all of his "edgier" and harder material. But when Tom Waits writes and performs a ballad - get out the Kleenex, man. His writing (and performing) is brilliant, and he is a gift to all of us. (And thanks, also, to his wife, Kathleen Brennan, who has been a large influence in much of his music, during this latter part of his career.)

  • @NaptownClassic
    @NaptownClassic 15 років тому +12

Pretty sure Tom appreciates it. The same thing happens in Metal concerts or Rap or any other form of music. This was a somber, quiet song. You just hear it more.
Plus why would an artist like Tom or any other want their fans to NOT express the emotions they feel when hearing particular lines they wrote. Or in this case Tom's wife wrote.
Either way I think the song, the performance and the presentation WITH the crowd cheering is beautiful beyond words.

This was (I'm almost positive) Atlanta 2006, which I attended. This was the encore and final song of the night. Not a dry eye in the house. The reason the crowd shuts up is because, at least in this venue, the crowd was louder than the band! When we started cheering full throttle, it would drown out everything on stage. There was no choice, you either had to shut up, or hear nothing. Tom even asked the crowd to keep applause to a minimum because of this very fact. That said, it was the experience of a lifetime. I wish there was a full video of the show. I know they filmed it, because we saw the cameras and operators working the whole time. Anti needs to release it already! :)

I am a new fan of Tom Waits & don't know a great deal about him. This song makes me cry so much. It really gets to me like no other song I've ever heard. It's poetic, brutally honest and unromantic in describing what it means to be a soldier.
I was wondering if there was controversy when this song was released? Did soldiers or veterans find some lyrics offensive? Or did some find that it expressed how they felt about war? I am very curious to find out if soldiers agreed with or protested Tom Waits "Day After Tomorrow".

@@lukeswain1752 In the early years after 9/11, a LOT of kids joined voluntarily. What many of them found was not what they were expecting. Anywhere from the beginning with the indoctrination of Basic Training, to the war itself, or even what they were told/brainwashed to expect when they got there. You can volunteer for something and become disillusioned just as easily as you can be drafted into it, especially when overcome with a sense of nationalism (aka misplaced-patriotism) due to a tragedy.

If we didn't shut up, you couldn't hear a thing. He even said to the crowd a few times to hold applause to a minimum because of this. It was the experience of a lifetime. I've seen Bowie, Roger Waters, the Eagles, Joe Walsh, Tom Petty, Bon Jovi, Black Crows, John Cafferty, George Jones, Phish, etc, etc, and Waits was miles above them all. Tom, in fact, was so appalled at these “kids” that He officially released this version through his record company’s UA-cam channel. Course that’s after he painstakingly recorded on video and multi track audio this particular performance out of all the shows on the tour and thought ‘hey this is so terrible and ruined by the kids in the audience that I’m going to release it.’

not the Detroit concert. He doesn't say "I long for your touch dear" at the beginning of the song at the detroit show.
He also didn't ask if everyone could hear alright.

The well spring of human kindness is over flowing in here, I'm afraid I might drown. Funny how everyone want's Peace and yet can't even get along on a silly youtube page.
    Children just behave.

i'm really glad you posted this comment. and i don't mean to sound negative, and i'm not discounting the sentiment of the song. but, as a LONG time tom waits fan i thought the lines "i'm not fighting for freedom, i'm fighting for my life" and "they fill us up with lies that everybody buys" were so trite i couldn't believe they were his. glad to hear kathleen probably wrote them. on the other hand "what i miss you won't believe, shoveling snow & raking leaves" GREAT line. that was tom, right?

As someone said before, they are not only applauding the song, but more out of recongision, that is clearly to me.
Has got nothing to do with politics, but with feelings. Like another commented, this song isnot about being a soldier but about being human.

Totally with you, Captain Adam. Some of my friends wouldn't "get" this either, and I feel that it is self-defeating if I tried to explain it to them. (Somehow, trying to explain the poetry of it ruins the poetry.)
DmDm, which song of his was in Fight Club?

A very simple song, but very poingient. There is nothing like military service to remind you of the little blocks you build a life from, as it takes you so very far away from them and you lose the ability to reconnect for long periods of time.

I can totally understand where you are coming from.
Although I'd rather be in a band where the crowd cheered for every word and note played than to have no cheering at all! lol

oh yeah of course, like i said i don't really rank artists...I prefer Dylan; though Waits is amazing, I probably listen to cold water every day...and to echo what you said they both have a place reserved in my heart for their ability to create beautiful music. :D

This is the Memphis show 2006. Tom did release official tunes from the Akron show as well. The Akron version of Falling Down is my personal favorite.

My point is simply that, whether one is a better poet, or a better musician, who influenced who, what have you... there's a point when it stops mattering. They both fill in the gaps the other one never could.
Waits said touring with Zappa was like being a rectal thermometer... How ridiculous would it be to compare these two talents? Just because they both happen to have something in common (like an affinity for making very odd sounds).

Sometimes almost any reaction is better than no reaction for the entertainer, but I can't help but wonder if Tom doesn't prefer a more attentive crowd. Here's an old Vietnamese proverb: It's the empty can that makes the most noise.

Tom officially released this version over all other from these tours. I pretty sure he would agree that he prefers a more attentive and 'connected' crowd. I was there that night and this crowd was 100% on point.

@Rodney: Exactly! Then again, what performance artist, vocalist, lyricist, dancer, musician, poet, activist, comedian, etc. would NOT wish for a connected audience. Hey...as I write this, I'm even more in awe of Tom Waits; his talents encompass all of the above genres. He's amazing...

Tom waits actually performed it first on Real Gone. And knowing their history, I think it is unlikely that Tom Waits would write anything for Joan Baez. I could be wrong, though.

Alright, sorry for my initial, drunk reaction. But "I'm not fighting for freedom, I'm not fighting for justice, I'm fighting for my life" and "they fill us up with lies that everybody buys," I think they are beautifully simple lines. Trite? I think you might have missed the point/narrative of the song. It comes from the viewpoint of an average joe, not a poet. Just a young soldier disillusioned with the absurdity of war and wanting to come home. *edited to make me sound smarter.
