When my autistic daughter was 2, her speech pathologist told me she would be very challenging to homeschool. When she was 5, her preschool psychologist told me she “only wanted the best for my daughter” and did not support me homeschooling. Now my daughter is 8 and she is thriving-I think special needs kids can be one of the best candidates for homeschooling.
Congratulations to you for not listening to the “experts” and following your mom heart.

I'm autistic (20 years old now) and I wished all throughout school that I could have been homeschooled. Public school can be awful for neurodivergent children in various ways. Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job! 💙

I am a 45 yr old autistic, and yes, the abuse that occurs in public school can be horrendous. Sadly, I lived through such instances and it was extremely traumatizing on many levels. I too wish I was homeschooled. Now, as a mom of 4, I am changing that with my youngest two. I tried to homeschool my older son, 23 and autistic, but his father refused to allow it. My son to this day wishes I was able to because he now has trauma too. Now I homeschool my youngest two. My 14 yr old daughter is autistic with many special needs, and my 12 year old son with ADHD. I truly wish I did sooner, as just before the pandemic hit my daughter was assaulted by a much larger boy while she was waiting for a para, to get her, despite two teachers talking right next to her. She was kicked in the chest as she sat and waited in her chair. She is a very small girl and could have been seriously hurt. This boy kept touching her head and would not stop when she asked. Before that, my 12 year old son dealt with getting into trouble just for trying to stick up for a special needs girl that kept being picked on and assaulted by these boys on the playground. H'e wasn't friends with her per se, but no one or the teachers would stop it so he wanted to try to help her. We think it has to do with racial desparties, due to the fact they where Islamic. We have a lot of immigrants in our town and a ton of violence problems due to it. I have nothing against various religions or race what so ever, our family is mixed on many levels with race and religious beliefs, but it is not right to see the town I was born and raised in go to absolute heck over the years because of so many problems integrating immigrants here. Anyways.. Im glad I homeschool now. It is very intimidating at times, because I can not help worrying that I am doing enough. But they are both very happy and healthy and oh so willing to learn too. I wish the best for you in life!

      Yes!
      I'm autistic with ADHD.
Public school was a horrible environment for me. It made me mask and a piece of me that was creative and comfortable, became terrified and withdrawn.
My son is autistic and I feel that I can give him the most attention and freedom to be creative and learn in a little bit of a different way.
I think public school has some helpful things, but some really damaging things as well.

I have been told several times by multiple people that it will be impossible to homeschool my son. He is 4 and we are learning reading, writing and math right now. He can count over 100 and knows shapes, colors and many sight words. I have helped him increased his words and communication. He is learning how to care for himself although potty training is not going well. He has a fear of the toilet. With his tablet and me working with him he has been doing amazing. I hate being pressured by people that either don't have children or don't have children with autism. I get unsolicited parenting advice and they tell me he is just spoiled or I should send him off to a special school or even with the case of my own grandmother she told me I need to adopt out one of my children because my " normal child" does not deserve to be raised around my son who is autistic. My children are best friends and love each other. My son loves music and singing and will sing his little heart out. It's how he started gaining speech was through music. After seeing autistic children being bullied and assaulted in public schools I do not feel public school is even an option. I do not feel discouraged when people talk down to us about homeschooling. I just know those people have not done a lick of research and do not know my children at all. I understand how my son learns and I know how to calm him. I know what his favorite activities are and I know about his issues with texture, food and smells. He likes lavender, floral and mints. I use essential oils and make custom scents for his room. That's his special space. I get treated like I am an idiot all the time when people find out my son has autism and I always ALWAYS get advice from people that " met " an autistic person once so they are an expert. 🙄 Trying to get more ideas right now to make his homeschooling experience more effective and fun. He loves learning and is always excited when he learns something new.

My daughter made the decision to homeschool her autistic daughter, realizing that Public School would be purgatory for her. I help out with that.
Altho diagnosed as dyslexic (which we already knew) and with no concept at all of phonics, she has TAUGHT HERSELF to read! Now she has begun sounding out the syllables to decipher words that are new to her and is learning to figure out the pronunciation of all "those pesky outlaw" words and letters, plus adding Spanish words to her growing vocabulary!
    And she's enjoying reading!
Public school would not have opened these doors to her.

So much frustration immediately hearing about that first statement of "you can't provide" what they need. I was told the same thing by the school staff when I asked about it.
We went to Charter school which is mostly me teaching during the days. We do get therapies. But the therapies honestly have been more stressful most times since we have little control over who it is, what they help with, and what times to meet.
The SLEEP! We have done everything short of continuing serious medication to get our child on-track in a decade. The serious medication we were prescribed made things worse and was a stressful experience for all considering there's minimal communication of when she is in pain/distress. So most kids can't give good feedback about medication, but a mostly non-verbal especially can't and it can be life threatening. We all get so upset over trying to keep sleep in order for school. To keep their schedule.
Being able to choose what therapies we find beneficial, having more direction for the therapist and to be allowed to pay for sessions gives us flexibility and control we feel is essential. The same goes for timing. Ideally our child would sleep consistently at least 7 hours a night and wake up by 5-6am! That's an ideal. But thus far that's just not realistic.
I LOVE forming a lesson plan although it IS extremely time consuming. But I feel I could be successful with my child and my child could have much progress when it's me teaching and adjusting to their personality.
Honestly the Charter school is getting in the way of this.
I have to deal with endless beuacracy and forms, and keeping up with state standardized testing and assesments that have yet to prove beneficial to us.
We get funding but we don't use it much vs NT kids...the best benefit thus far as been things like printer ink and the AAC device and maintenance.
We are now sick of it. The Charter school is even more stringent about curriculum and less flexible as they grow. We are looking into fully homeschooling. We just need to figure out the costs for devices and therapy.
I wish the best to anyone else, however they choose to educate their child but I think homeschool is supreme!

He has a problem with holding the pencil and he has a problem with expressing his emotions verbally most of the time He does talk much better when he's calm but if he gets excited or over stimulated Of course there's rambling. But all in all He's quite a normal child Your words have given me such hope that I'm not doing anything wrong and homeschooling is the right thing to do for him. So true about the basic needs. I don't think for the high functioning kids who speak well (who may appear to be like most other kids), most people realize that the need to get them to eat enough/get enough rest/sleep even if not at 'typical times' cannot be overlooked. It shouldn't be assumed that it's easy for some on the spectrum (or in some cases even possible) to get enough nutrition in public school/wake up early enough with enough rest for a typical school schedule. Kids health has to come first! Without that (among other significant challenges) these kids would have even more challenges learning. Certain routines are not best for all and are not easy or even possible for some.

  • @krisw5318
    @krisw5318 9 місяців тому

Thank you so much for making and posting this video - and especially for the tips you provided! Meeting basic needs - including the need to feel safe - is especially important. It's something so many people who advocate public school for autistic children don't seem to take into account - even though public school is often a sensory (and social) nightmare for autistic children. It definitely was for me (with some exceptions - such as science class).
Regarding your use of Minecraft - I totally agree! Minecraft guidebooks and novels were how my autistic son developed a love for reading and the motivation to learn to read independently. It can also be incredibly helpful for encouraging social development. When my son was younger, he came with me while I babysat. Two of the children loved Minecraft, and introduced it to my son. For the first time, all three children had a common interest! They watched each other play, and, after they'd finished their allotted screen time for the day, they moved on to a live action version - building shelters from chairs and sheets, feeding chickens and cattle (they live on a farm), and acting out various scenes from the game.

Im at the end of the video and yes momma my son is extremely obsessed with oil pumps and I thought recent how he could benefit if I made a workbook out of oil pumps. It's something we have always drawn together and he walks around pretends his arm is an oil pump, he sings about oil pumps so it seems to be the option to go with when trying to get him interested in learning. Your video only reassured me more that my option to homeschool is the best. There's so many layers to this subject!

I ended up moving him to homeschooling this school year and starting him on prek / kindergarten . I’m nervous his team from the hospital want him in public school but some people from his team do agree with homeschooling since he’ll be at home more comfortable and I know his triggers and interest .

Hi, I have 2 boys one is 18 done with school and a 12 yr old who has anxiety and autism spectrum disorder. For most of his school yrs he was always having trouble in school , tantrums, being overwhelmed , rushed, all the things kids with autism feel. Just this past January he had another big melt down and I was called again for the 100th time to go pick him up from school because of his outbursts. He was also in the bridge program for kids with autism the teacher told me she don't think its the best fit for him.okay I kept getting told almost every year that he may not be a good fit for something.Well because me and him also got really sick with COVID a couple days later (we are fully vaccinated ) but still had gotten it. I decided that the best thing for me as his mom is to unschool him and homeschool him myself. Now I live in upstate NY so here you have to cover the math ,social studies/history science/health ,reading and PE. I do give him breaks when needed and as you know is kids with autism get board extrely easy and fast . So I do cover all the subjects with him but what he wants to learn in those areas . Like if he has a day where he is cranky or not in a good mood that day I know not to push anything on him we sometimes make it up on the weekends. And middle school hrs is 990 hrs a school yr. Now how exactly do I get that with a autistic child ? Even in school physically alot of kids don't exactly do the 990 hrs in a school yr. So my question is am I doing the rite thing for my autistic child ? I'm a first time homeschool mom I been doing it for 5 months now . And do you have any suggestions for me that maybe I can use to maybe make it a little easier for him and still following the states standard? Please anything will help 😊

I have a 10 year old. After years of accomplishing nothing in public "special needs" school, (actually having a negative effect,) we chose to home school our son. What a world of difference. Much better.
Question: When mental frustration, anger and outright destruction around the home begins, how best to bring them back down to being calm?
The only thing I found so far that works for my son is that I bought him a treadmill. I tell him, "when you get angry, go for a run". Works 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time I have to basically lay on top of him for a few minutes saying I love you over and over again until he gets tired of it and gives up. But what happens when he becomes stronger than me and that just doesn't work anymore?
    What do you think?

Re-watching and YES we do have basic needs days/ "mental health" days. BUt we make up for it on weekends (dad works weekends and since they are crowded days outside and therefore triggering...it works).
In the public schools we were threatened a lot for being late. They would complain if my child was tired etc. So we stopped going on bad days, when she wouldn't eat breakfast etc. They threatened us about attendance.
This was not the worst of it- we left due to too much secrecy and physical abuse, let alone warehousing and potentially sexual abuse.
Unfortunately Charter school is not good enough anymore. Especially as we have been with the charter since it was smaller and owned by someone else...now it's run almost just like a public school in too many ways. The requirements are not worth the funding. The therapies given are more stressful and about me teaching the therapists how to better help my child- I'd rather keep doing the majority of the work without all that!

      Hey! Thanks for watching!
We use a hodge podge, and I change things up if they aren't working. AT THE MOMENT, we are using Beast Academy for math (amzn.to/3aipxOU or www.beastacademy.com) and supplementing with a Spectrum workbook (amzn.to/31Ja46h) mainly for review and writing practice.
For LA, we use The Good and The Beautiful (goodandbeautiful.com) which has been a great fit for him and my 9 year old.
For science, we mainly do unschooling for that at home and he takes science classes at our co-op. We also have lots of hands on science stuff: amzn.to/31M1wMh or amzn.to/3itu1oD .
For history, we use Sonlight (www.sonlight.com/rewards/RS20392595) but I have to adapt it for him. I own it because of using it with the two older kids. I'm adding in lots of UA-cam videos and other books. We're also doing more audiobooks than read alouds.
I just started Handwriting Without Tears (www.lwtears.com), and I'm really hopeful it'll be good for him!
I'm still learning what works well for him! He also really like Duolingo and is kind of into foreign languages.
      Hope this helps!

Same! Just now saw that post. My child could do kindergarten based on age (that’s what public was trying to do), but I’m going to keep working on # & letter writing/recognition while doing PreK stuff with his younger brother too.
For sight words/help reading, I’ve seen recommendations to “label” things in the house with notecards or slips of paper taped to the objects.
This is my first year back into homeschooling. I hodge podged for my oldest, but this year, with 3 boys at different levels (oldest is considered 5th grade in public this year), I’m using Gather ‘Round Year 1 for all 3 kids, & then added math with Teaching Textbooks & cursive for my oldest.

I really want to homeschool and a lot of my friends/family are supportive. Does anyone else fear that their child won’t graduate/pass the ged testing and feel like they’re to blame? A lot of my friends who were homeschooled are shocked by my stories of public school and a lot of my public school educated friends think the horrors are normal because they’re “just kids”.

@homebody Cassidy vlogs: yes, I worried about that before I started homeschooling. Still do from time to time. I have only been homeschooling my son since January but my son (who is 13 and has asd and adhd) has made so much progress these past few months that I find myself worrying about it less and less. There is so much more help out there that you could find for your child that isn't available in public schools (co-ops, tutors, friends, etc). You can do this! Plus, one of the amazing things about homeschooling is that if one method doesn't work for your child, there's a million other ways to get the same result. In public school, your child has to do it the school's way, even if your child doesn't understand it. Follow your instincts. You won't fail. Your child won't fail. My son is so much more happier and he is more confident! I hope this encourages you!

I’m learning that some, not all of these so called white-coats and their degrees have blown up egos and prideful attitudes. They get caught up in thinking they know so much more than the parents as to what’s best for their own child and when you challenge them, some try to belittle you, talk down to you, or disregard you. Also, I’ve learned to always look at the doctor’s or nurse’s notes because if you stand firm , they tend to write exaggerated comments to make you look like you’re making bad choices for your family.
As much as I would love to put my child in traditional school, with everything that’s going on, there are too many safety concerns.

I have been doing some research on homeschooling and I think it varies in different states on how to go about starting to homeschool your child when your child is already in public schools, but you can look up your states rules and regulations. Here in Missouri, you can write a letter to your child's school saying you are withdrawing them from school to homeschool.

For that age, I don’t really recommend much formal schooling. I’d keep working on basic skills like language building, fine motor skills, etc. I’d join her in what she enjoys doing - play with her, go to parks, read to her (even if you don’t think she’s paying attention). I’d get some Montessori style toys for exploration. Focus on meeting those sensory and emotional needs!

He has made great progress he is now using about 60 words daily. We have decided to homeschool him fearing that if something might happen at school, he won’t be able to tell us. Since his vocabulary is so limited We don’t know where to start or what curricula to use. I am sure the expectations aren’t the same for a kindergartner that’s not in the spectrum. Any suggestions on what curricula to use? I hear abeka is good 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @lindagraham7748
      @lindagraham7748 Рік тому

Abeka is a great curriculum for kids who like workbook learning. It is however highly academic and can be a bit too fast paced if you feel the need and are driven to have your child complete it all in by the end of the school year.
My granddaughter has just been diagnosed as ADHD and moderate ASD along with a suspected math learning disability as she just finished 5th grade but functions at 2nd grade in math understanding. She just finished 5th grade at a small Christian private school that used Abeka curriculum. Great school...great curriculum....but not a good fit for her. Currently trying to convince her parents to let me homeschool her this coming year with a more relaxed "unschool" approach that follows her interests. Last year was an incredibly stressful year for the 3 adults assisting her to get her through 5th grade and the three were many meltdowns and tears on her part as well.
