I retired as a junior high and high school history and science teacher and coach. One of my favorite education stories is one told to me by a colleague. She was a retired teacher and was substituting and told me her best teaching job in 33 years was at Angola State prison when she taught a class of violent criminals. She said they were perfectly behaved and she could actually teach without being interrupted.
#Exactly . The admin made the rules they should also take part in enforcing them and take whatever comes with it themselves. Admins should never have the teachers to risk setting off students if they won't do it themselves because there are or has been a history or certain schools where the admin(s) will take part in enforcing rules and risk setting off the students but have more of the goods to back them up that the teachers don't have . Moreover, the parents should be called out for letting this happen because back in my day, My Mother and Father avoided this from ever taking place in the first place. Granted, There was a time in my upper elementary school where my main teacher let us bring something with us to play with at recess. Otherwise, I would never have out even so much as a jambox or even a Walkman at school in fact, I would have never even thought about doing that even though it played a good part in my anxiety about being at school away from home.
Kids are in control today, it's an absolute disaster, and there's every excuse under the sun with mental health being one of them. If your mental health is that bad, you surely should not be in that setting.
Exactly. I have autism but my parents hammered into me to respect my elders. I was a math genius and humble. But kids today with disability act like pre schoolers while in high school. Parents should parent and keep their kids out of school if they can’t handle an environment with rules.
As a man who's also suffers from Autism I strongly feel sorry for the Teacher's aide, When I heard about this I was stunned, My jaw has dropped,A 6,7 270lbs African American man who's 17 at the time attacked the aide with full force & knocking her out & going insane on her over a Nintendo switch.I grew up in the 90's & if you had a hand held game out on class it would be tooken away from you, He should have known that he was going to get it back & second he shouldn't be taken his switch to school!I say he's going to get the 30 year sentence & he will be out until he's 50 years old.
In my 3 years as a teaching assistant, ive been strangled, bitten, scratched, spat at, punched in the face, punched in the stomach and threats of being murdered all from primary school students (ages 3-10), where does it all end?? I cant believe that this is what working in education is nowadays
I'm all for the unyielding stance of the teacher. I was pistol-whipped in the head and shot twice in a robbery in 1988. Endured six surgeries over the next 15 months and watched my dreams of entering the military go up in smoke. Two years later, the now 20 Y.O. perp was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Nine years later, his mother reached out to my family and I for the first time. This woman never visited me in the hospital, never sent a get well card, never helped out with my medical bills. She was absent when her son was up in front of the judge. Eleven years after the shooting, she wanted some kind of letter or statement saying that I'd recovered, that we were willing to let bygones be bygones...something to take to the parole board to get her "model son" out of prison. We verbally "let her have it"!
Virginia doesn't have enough special ed teachers. As you said, these behaviors have a direct impact on recruiting. Admin, school board, need to step it up. It's ok to expel students, it's ok to suspend them for a week. Consequences need to be enforced. When you have a classroom of 28 kids and 3 have behavioral issues, the other 25 can't learn. My classroom was different when THAT child was absent because everyone was learning that day, I was able to teach, my stress level was low, I made a difference, the children were happier. I left teaching.
I am a counselor and neurofeedback therapist. I work with children on the autistic spectrum all the time, I work with children on the on the higher end and lower end of the spectrum. Autistic kids need boundaries just like every other student. Autistic children need a bit more work in teaching them how to control their emotions and regulate their emotions. I hate it when parents don't disaplin their autistic children and just use autism as an excuse for bad behavior. Parents need to put in the work with their autistic children and teach them boundaries and how to regulate their emotions.
I had an 11th and 12th teacher who had a gun locked up in his classroom. Really, he just did target practice with another teacher on the weekend. He wasn't worried about the students. If your daddy just came home from Vietnam, you are not going to be very disruptive.
Kid from Indiana said he was coached by men in his family on how to stage for a lawsuit if he wanted a car. The problem is little to no consequences unless it gets physical. Schools need cameras in classrooms where footage can be pulled for context and to protect the school district from any legal action taken by a blatant threat to the school and the other students academic progress. Historically, school is not for everyone.
My heart bleeds for all parties. As a 62 year old man, talking back to adults would've been unthinkable when I was a child. Also, as a black man, I was raised by college educated parents and grandparents. Respect for educators and education has to start early or all is lost!
I worked at a clinic. I was surprised at the number of educators that came in injured, and many with no repercussions to the instigator children. There was even stalking. Crazy.
Autism is not an excuse. Trauma is not an excuse. We reduce humans to base instincts when we use those as excuses for behaviors, as though they are in no more control than an animal. If that's the case then then we should have separate settings for those people in the same way we keep animals in the zoo.
I’ve had UA-camrs criticize me for not knowing what I’m talking about, even though I got my degree from one of the more selective universities that still has teacher training, which elite private schools typically do not have at least at the undergraduate level. In reality I taught for 8 years at four different schools, including Job Corps, big city high school, parochial school, and substituting in the suburbs as well. Then also I tried being a Benedictine brother. When I taught in the ghetto I was assaulted at least ten times. Nevertheless, schooling is forced schooling and teachers can be quite confrontational. Kids who are not academically inclined should be auditing school without grades. Grading doesn’t really accomplish anything. Also there should be more recreational reading and manual arts. For some kids school is virtually indistinguishable from the juvenile lock-up.
I've never heard that idea, of having students audit school without grades. Would those kids even come to school if they weren't getting grades? How would that work?
I believe that more casual schools would be better for everyone. After all, there have been many experimental schools where they let the kids choose what they want to do. Class rankings could be done by grades on finals only which could be more like standardized testing like SATs.@@rebekahmontesdeoca565
Kids would be more likely to show up for school if they didn’t have to worry about grades. Class rank can be determined by final exams prior to graduation similar to the SATs.@@rebekahmontesdeoca565
They are basically doing that and then pushing the kids into college, wasting money on them instead of investing in the students that can accomplish something. But now they have to have remedial math and reading because of that. It's backwards and produces incompetent professionals

As a result he put the entire school district on what amounts to probation to make sure these culturally insensitive and/or racist teachers cleaned up their act! 98% of teachers still vote Democrat so in a way teachers are a big part of the problem.
