  • MT. RINJANI, ACTIVE VOLCANO IN LOMBOK INDONESIA, 2D1N HIKE. WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE YOU GO.
Lombok Indonesia, a beautiful island just to the east of Bali that has many exciting things to offer, but arguably the most popular attraction is to climb Mt. Rinjani, the second highest volcano in the country. If you’re thinking of attempting this hike, be sure to do your research (this video will help). My friends and I completed the 2D1N hike in November 2023 and this video breaks down all the details of the journey.
    GUIDE: 0:40
For our hike we used lombok-indones... The guides (Hamdi & Birin), porters, homestay, and the itinerary were all wonderful and I would recommend using them to anyone thinking about taking this hike. I did not receive any promotion from them for this video, the reco is on my own.
    ITINERARY:
The Itinerary is based on the 2D1N hike taking the Sembalun Route (Ref to VIDEO), which consists of 4 check points on the way up (Day1) before camping at the crater rim. Day 2 consists of the hike to summit then descending all the way down to the starting point.
    PRE HIKE: 1:20
We arrive at Lombok International Airport (LOP) and the tour group rides us to the homestay which in North Lombok close to the base of Mt Rinjani.
At the homestay we receive details from our guide about our trip, what to expect, what to bring etc. We have dinner and then go to sleep.
    DAY 1: 2:54
We wake up at the homestay and eat a quick breakfast before taking a 1 hour car ride to the national park entrance, before starting the hike we need to undergo a short medical clearance.
We arrive at the National Park entrance and start our journey. The first part of the hike is grassy and scenic with cows grazing all around is.
4:22 Arrival at Position 1: It is still the beginning of the hike and the weather is good.
4:49 Arrival at Position 2: At this checkpoint we have lunch, which was cooked and organized by the guides and porters. We took a rest here before moving on towards checkpoint 3.
5:44 On the way to Position 3 a monsoon rain hit us, if you are attempting this hike in November or December rain gear is a MUST. This is the portion of the hike that starts to get steeper.
6:27 Position 3: We arrive to checkpoint 3 and take some shelter from the rain. The rain slows down and we head off towards checkpoint 4.
7:10 Position 4: This is the final checkpoint before we reach the crater rim. The next portion after checkpoint 4 is the hardest and most tiring of Day 1.
    ARRIVAL AT CRATER RIM: 8:16
We arrive at the crater rim in late afternoon and it’s a beautiful sight. We rest here and enjoy the sunset before having dinner. Immediately after dinner we go to bed, as we need to wake up at 2am to start Day 2.
    DAY 2: 10:02
We begin the hike to the summit with still wet shoes and socks at 2:30AM. It is pitch black and hundreds of hikers are heading up the steep landscape with their headlamps.
10:48 The terrain gets very tough the closer we get to the summit. The ground is covered in sandy black ash, that slides when you try to climb up it, so when you step up 2 steps you slide 1 backwards. This was truly a mental test.
11:32 Arrival at the summit: We arrive at the summit around sunrise and it is absolutely stunning and worth the effort. We spent about an hour here waiting for the whole group to arrive before heading down the mountain.
12:22 The way down is much easier than the way up but still not a joke. The first part of the descent is like a ski slope, sliding back down the sandy ash. We stop back at the campsite for breakfast before continuing down the mountain.
A quick stop at Position 2 for lunch before passing throw the cow pasture at the end and finishing the hike. Most of us stay in Lombok after the hike and enjoy what the rest of the island has to offer.
