    A lot of people think that the fail point of CVTs is the belt, or the mechanics, but in reality its cooling. A single moving system has to endure all of the heat stress of the drive alone, and early examples struggled to properly managed it. Most CVTs like from Nissan fixed the issue with additional transmission coolers and revised shifting programming, extending the life of the units to be on par with contemporary geared transmissions.

    Gents and ladies, this is not a Toyota CVT... God I hate misinformation... That's a common belt CVT, yes in some cars, mostly scooters, go karts, quads and so on. Toyota engineered a cvt drive with a planetary gear. Used since the first Prius. Originally patented by honda I think. Very interesting, a little complex to fully understand, but simple in principle, such a beautiful thing. Hybrid synergy drive. You're welcome. PS: CVT stands for continuous variable transmission. So it's able to change gear ratios continuously instead of discrete steps like a usual gearbox like a manual Shifter, or most of automatics as well. Cvt is another form of an automatic transmission.

    The thing that kill cvt gearbox is how we drive you must be smooth when accelerating don't be rough to much and also when parking is when many drivers making mistakes you must put to N first and then hand brake lastly to P then cvt it will last.Also on the robot don't depend on D for long or N because your Transmission becomes very hot then is where problem starts.

    They say the honda CVT. Is good for at least a 100000. And then what you gotta throw in another transmission, they're junk. I have a 2013 Honda. Accoruns great rides nice, but the Trinity's making all kinds of noise. Pay $30000 for a car and then have to worry about throwing a transmission in. I have 200000 on it, but I was hoping to get the 300 thought. This would be my last car, but I guess not. And people on here say, well, you got 200000 out of it. When you pay $30000 I don't mind changing other parts on the car, but not the motor and tranny.

    Just looking at it makes me tired. I change about two a week, where I work. One of the two is always a Nissan. CVT is garbage that should have never existed. Only the one in the Prius is good. It is made with planetary gears and is just a tough as a manual transmission. They will easily outlast the rest of the car.

    • @PotatotheTroll
      @PotatotheTroll 7 місяців тому +2

      The failure rate, among other less obvious differences. Also, they're saying this is an older design.
      Recent Toyota CVTs often include a 1-gear automatic that handles launching from a stop, for example. Toyota also has a variation on the CVT that exclusively works on hybrid cars, as it involves an electric motor and no belt.
      However, the base CVT design typically involves a rubber or metal belt and two pulleys with variable diameter. It didn't take too long for companies to converge on metal belts riding on cones.
      There's probably some materials science that goes into all of this, too. You want the belt to have a good grip on the cones, but also be able to slide up and down during shifts without scratching things. Some combination of chemistry, surface polish, and geometry has to make this work.

    Newest generation of CVTs in Honda and Toyota largely addressed most concerns from consumers such as the lack lf shifting by adding fake gears and adding better software to give you a more direct feel. They still suck compared to a regular 8 speed transmission out from Germany but in the economy vehicles that most consumers buy, they have no clue what driving experience is. Hence, we have tons of boring cars on the road with even "sport" models now with CVTs instead of a manual transmission.
