In this video, we will show how to perform mass updates on your R440 server via the Lifecycle Controller. You will need an active Internet connection, a Laptop/Desktop, and a NIC installed in your R440. You will also need some Ethernet cables to connect the devices. You will want to connect your R440 to your network, so it has Internet access. You can do this by connecting the R440's NIC to a switch or directly to the network. You will then set the server's IP address, so it can join the network. You can then access Dell's Update downloads catalog via HTTPS in the Lifecycle controller. Depending on the last time you updated your system, these updates can take hours. The speed and power of your system as well as the number of updates selected also plays a role in how long these updates will take. We run our servers overnight and sometimes come back in and the updates have not finished.... So yes, be patient and expect this to take a fair amount of time. Setting up the updates will only take a matter of minutes and is relatively easy.

Nice job. Followed your instructions worked perfectly. Very useful to mass update over downloading each firmware and updating one after another. I am confused with "Dell Website" under repository. Why did you select Network Share (and then HTTPS) instead of Dell Website?

Appreciate positive feedback. I hear you and feel your pain. Manufacturers don't keep their websites up to date. That's why Cloud Ninjas is here to help!

I'm doing a very cool project about retropcs and i am trying to build a ps1-like pentium based console. I chose a pentium 166 and a board from dm&p, a single 64mb sdram block pc100 (mb only has 1 for sdram and 2 for 16-pin ram), a matrox millenium and a ide cf card/hard drive depending on performance needed.

Now that is some old school stuff. Let me know how it goes.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing it. Do you know if after updates it will work with xeon 6150? I found quite a few sets of r440 with that CPU, but when I tried to install one on my R440, I got "Processor(s) TDP is higher than system power limited. Replace the processor(s) with supported ones". I updated the BIOS after swapping back to the old CPU but it did not help. The second attempt to resolve the issue was changing the TDP from nominal to 2 in the BIOS on the old CPU but I'm not sure if it remembers this option for the new one beacuse I cannot even get to the BIOS after swap. Seems like tomorrow I will do third swap back to do the rest of the updates and see if it will help. Any ideas what else could I try? I wish to make it work, but every potential solution is almost as expensive as actually supported CPUs. The problem is, they are worse than the 6150 so I'd love to make it work, just have no idea what is the issue.

Check out our R440 CPU video. In comments, another user put up some good info. There are 2 different motherboards for R440. Depending on which version of board, depends on which CPUs you can use. V1 boards don't accept the higher TDP.

Will this work on the R410?

I am pretty certain there is a similar method. I haven't worked on a R410 in a couple years. Built thousands of them back a few years ago. Would not be same exact steps as in this video but should stillbe a helpful guide. And you might need to update your lifecycle controller first in order to run updates. Good luck!
