Oooooooh Sonny.... KING of Slydeco! This guy carved out his own niche among slide players* (most others are 'occasional' slide players, not Sonny) by developing a "behind-the-slide" playing technique that is singular and amazing. Slide on pinky, his other fingers are free to fret notes, chords and chord fragments! That, my friends, is incredible dexterity and tactile sensitivity. Right hand slaps and taps; his picking is what I call a Hybrid/Full PIMA method of picking; most other hybrid pickers only use just a couple of fingers. Sonny Landreth is a truly unique and creative player, and in my opinion a Criminally Underrated Guitarist.
Thanx Fil! For the due and proper on guys like Sonny.
ROCK!
Amen!
Totally true!
Chickens!!!
Both Sonny Landreth and Derek Trucks appear on Junior Well's album, "Come On in This House", my favorite JW recording.
I hear criminally underrated a lot and often about people that other players are aware of and respect but also have a decent following among the public. I just saw a comment I did on Sonnys 4 U & Forever? And he is hardly heard but he is amazing. I first heard him on College Radio show called The Bayou. And the phrase is definitely warranted in his case.
I mentioned earlier live in Lafayette Louisiana. Saw Sonny live two weeks ago at Festival International de Louisiane and again last Thursday night at Rhythms on the River at DeGaulle Square in River Ranch. He’s absolutely amazing. Vince Gill said watching Sonny was like algebra….he’d never understand it.
Mark Knopfler once described Sonny as being " the best live player in the world".
👍
Eric Clapton called him "one of the most advanced and under-appreciated guitarist in the world."
And he was 100% correct!
And I’m a big Landreth fan. Sonny puts on an amazing show every time I’ve seen him. A unique talent, that, much like Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher, never gets the widespread love that he probably deserves. Either way, Sonny is the boss!
Amen!
Oh hell yeah! Great description!
For myself, Sonny has the edge over the great Derek Trucks, hailing from the musical gumbo that is Louisiana/New Orleans. Such a melting pot of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, blues, country, rocknroll, cajun, zydeco & beyond. Then there's that fretting behind the slide technique...he's definitely my favourite electric blues based slide guitarist.
Speaking of great slide guitarists, I'd love to hear your assessment of jazz slide monster, Dave Tronzo...check him out, he'll melt your face!
Thanks Fil for This one! "Sonny has reinvented a new way to play guitar. And he doesn't just play slide. He's doing stuff behind the slide and ahead of the slide. It's like algebra to me. I couldn't figure it out in a million years, but it completely kills me to hear him play. His intonation is frighteningly good." ~Vince Gill
"You have to watch what he's playin' five or six times just to get an inkling of what he's playing. He can do amazing things without even moving the slide."~Timothy Chapman
"The magical, unique fingers of the slide master had guitar fans transfixed!" ~William Lindner
👍
Saw Sonny Landreth at a Blues Workshop once in Syracuse, NY. He was taking questions from spectators. A guy asked him how he made a particular sound he heard several times and without blinking Sonny said, " You have to eat lots of Gumbo".
Just discovered Sonny today ,awesome slide.
Right up there with Ry Cooder , Leo Kottke , Lowell George , Roy Rogers , Derek Trucks , Duane Allman , Clapton , Beck , Elmore James - & a boatload of others !
All that to say , this Cat could play .
Man....that’s talent!! He’s got so much going on but keeps amazingly melodic!! I saw him on Claptons crossroads guitar festival he was sensational! Great vid thanks Fil !!!!👌👌👌👌
👍
Sonny Landreth is just flat out amazing. Unique style for sure. Thanks for this!
No problem!
Great video of his unique technic of playing , I could actually see what you were talking about which helps to understand the terminology you use in your verbal discriptions . It's pretty amazing how some players have worked out there own unique way of playing their guitar. It's kind of like a signature that no one else can copy perfectly .
Yeah!
You got it Sandra......doing it "their way" removes the paradigm of structured method and allows full creativity without restrictions, resulting in a distinctive singular sound and style; making them #1 in a category of 1, and the ones who follow can only imitate. Pure Genius stuff.
I'm from the same town as Sonny and have had the pleasure of hearing him live for the last 40+ years, often sitting in with other local legends like Clifton Chenier, Zachary Richard, and others. Very, very down to earth guy.
Yep - Breaux Bridge, LA.
I was the F.O.H. sound engineer and production manager for Sonny back in the 90's.
Sonny (and Dave Ranson on bass) both excellent guys to work with and very laid back.
We used to go to "Cafe Des Amis" when I was in town visiting with Sonny. Excellent restaurant - which I was told is now closed. Always a good time on tour with Sonny and Dave! Both top notch musicians.
LOVE Sonny, was so fortunate to see him live twice, first with John Hiatt then solo and that time I was backstage and on top of being a wonderful musician he is a very sweet, humble person!!
Merci/Thank you Fil
Cool!
Wow! This is impressive and So Much Fun!
👍
Awesome playing and analysis! One of the fun things, for me (as I watch your channel), is remembering the great players who are less known. I'm learning and being entertained by your presentations, Fil. Right on!
Cool!
Might be too much but recall an interview with Sonny where he related a story about being a teenager and seeing The Jimi Hendrix Experience in La. Had an idea where he might be staying for the night and son of a gun, saw him in the gift shop the next morning, buying a tooth brush. Tried to answer what was the meaning behind "Bold As Love". Answer was short but left an impression on young Sonny!
Cool!
yep and thanx, Fil. I guess Sonny tried to think on his feet so to speak and asked the first question that he could think of. Jimi just tried to accomdate by saying something like "Its like love and war with men and women and,,, i don't know. I just woke up." At least he tried :)
This guy is amazing, slide guitar smoothness like Duane Allman or Derek Trucks! Derek has nailed his very own sound as well with his unique "siding fret" sound which would make a great Wings of Pegasus style breakdown video!
Derek is here somewhere!
@@wingsofpegasus very cool my brother, so how about Duane Allman?... lol 😂
I love listening to you talk about the playing techniques and the musicians your voice is like poetry to my ears! I'm not hitting on you I'm a grandma but I absolutely think you are adorable love love love your videos keep the good work coming thank you so much for the bottom of my heart
Thanks!
Fascinating. I learn so much listening to you...made my morning. Thanks again
Thanks!
I’ve seen Sonny multiple times with John Hiatt & The Goners, and on a double bill with Cindy Cashdollar. His sound is truly unique. IMHO, Hiatt’s best gigs were when he was backed by SL and The Goners.
Cool!
Cool, I dig the way the harmonics ring out while he's sliding. Nice,
👍
Lagniappe
Remembered this tidbit today(for nerds like me), Sonny carries a scrap of one of Duane Allman's shirts, in his guitar case, for a gris gris.
Nice!
I love this channel! Finally subscribed after watching tons of these episodes over the last week. 'd love to see an analysis of Willie Nelson, in particular how his playing has changed over the years as he continues to use his guitar Trigger. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
He's good, real good!
Wow awesome picker!!! Favorite part @5:45 where he brings the dynamics down. Awesome tone too. Very good Fil. 👍👍👍😁😁😁
👍
GREAT PLAYING
Yeah!
ALL FIVE FINGERS on the right hand.....yeah, I've got work to do. That dude is a technical god (with a small g of course!)
😂👍
Big Sonny formed a band Big Sonny and the Low Boys with Jimmy Carl Black on Drums (the indian of the group ZAPPA)
I may have this all wrong??
And I thought there was no one on this planet that could hold a candle to Derek Trucks - Oh boy ! How wrong I was 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
There is a video of Sonny And Derek Trucks playing Congo Square that is incredible
Love this
👍
Hi Fil , very kool . Can listen to Sonny for hours . Later Richie.
No problem!
Greatest slide guitar player in my opinion. Check out Sonnys playing with Warren Haynes on the Deepest End
Thanks!
Wow,a Stratocaster this time. This sounds pretty good.
Sonny’s a band by himself he’s the Chet Atkins of slide players .
IMHO the most innovative slide player playing today. Great analysis Fil but he isnt just lifting the slide when fretting notes behind but often holds down the string behind and below the slide, he uses this technique a lot.
👍
..with The Goners!
New name to me, cheers!
Have you seen Feodor Dosumov play?
He's in 'MyPlaylists' playlists. He's an amazing fusion player.
;~)
Thanks!

Sonny Landreth
Jan 23rd 2020 @ Islington Assembly Hall
London, United Kingdom
Edited to add, if you go,,, remember to breathe...
lol
cancelled the gig
You scored again Fil. Im not a huge slide fan but i like this guy he keeps it interesting. Jeff Beck also plays good slide... check out Will Ray from the Helecasters he has slides he made out of spoons that cover only parts of his fingers so he has full use of his hands Sweet Dreams is a standout track
Thanks!
Excellent! Do you ever do this with Bass guitar players? Thank you.
Not yet!
I asked for Sonny and by gosh you already had him! This is not his most liquid stuff, although it's good. Try 'Congo Square' for us! I's really like to hear your take on that .
Fil- Another cool analysis, Sonny Landreth is great and the sample you picked proves why! He played the Waterfront Blues Festival here in Portland once or twice but unfortunately I missed him...hopefully next time I can make it.
Speaking of great slide players, but in a completely different genre, have you ever heard Debashish Bhattacharya? He plays North Indian Classical (Hindustandi) music as well Indian/Jazz fusion on modified slide guitars (with additional sympathetic strings) that he designed. Here's a clip from several years ago. Check it out when you get a chance. If you've never heard him you will be amazed: ua-cam.com/video/SIc9PQEzBNI/v-deo.html (OOPS I posted the wrong link earlier, it went back to this video; but it's fixed now.) In the clip he is playing Raga Charukeshi in Teental (16 beat cycle).
Thanks!
Sliding and fretting at the same time--very impressive. A bit surprised I haven't run across his videos before--he's pretty close to me geographically. I have another suggestion from near by--Shawn Lane--one of the fastest players of all time.
Shawns here somewhere ☺
Cool! I'll look at your catalogue a bit closer.
How about a look at Ritchie Blackmore and his style and fluid graceful dexterity.
Thanks! I've done one do far on Ritchie.
Stan Lassiter uses a slide on his ring finger, but it's not a full slide. So he has all four fingers available and can switch effortlessly between slide and fretted. Check out his "Little Italy Shred" for an example.
Thanks Glen!
Going off topic but please look on UA-cam ; kid plays Samba Pati for Carlo Santana. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks!
That kid, Lucciano Pizzichini, from Argentina, is 18 this year. I saw some original stuff that he did recently with a band he put together himself--kind of bluesy, kind of crunchy, kind of technical. Very nice. It wasn't right up top when i looked just now, but here's a little solo work. ua-cam.com/video/KkMwxwtwkfw/v-deo.html
@@hipgnotist777
This seemed kinda broken...not smooth. Like the gretsch drums behind him. Liked him better a kid.
I kind of agree, but now you know who he is. I'll post that original stuff later if i find it. It's rather better.
Love💕

"A shot was fired, the gates flew open
The years streaked right before his eyes"
New Landlord
ua-cam.com/video/IY0ht-GLzq8/v-deo.html
Neon lights don't ever dim
In the kind of bars that never close
In a back room game T-Jim yelled,
"St. Gabriel! I'm gonna steal the show!"
He slapped his cards down on the table
Said "Boys, I got me a winning hand"
But the sight that made ole T-Jim tremble
Was the king that took his land
Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor
With the ticket burning in his hand
And the tip still ringing in his ear
Big Pete bet his whole life savings
As the race was drawing near
A shot was fired, the gates flew open
The years streaked right before his eyes
Too bad they were riding on the saddle
From a moment of ill advice
Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor
Other names in other places
Different rules but it's all the same
Cause if that bug ever bites you
The scar will bear you shame
I tell you, son, you know you're in trouble
If you wake up one morning in a daze
And as you peer into the mirror
The face leaning over says:
Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor
Thanks!
master of harmonics. is that a dumbel in the background.?
I didn't notice?!
Yep
I have heard you say on many slide guitarist the value of putting the slide on their pinky but could one put the slide on their index finger and get fretted slide action that way also.
It's possible, but to fret 2nd finger to little finger might be a bit awkward especially if your hands are on the smaller side. Unless you just want one fretted note at a kind, that would be ok.
Not really, because you want, actually you really need, to be able to have your other fingers mute the strings behind the slide to stop weird backwards noises from the strings. The only way it works to put the slide on your index finger is if you are Australian guitarist Dave hole, who plays slide over hand style, almost like lap steel, but on a standard guitar and instead of holding the slide between his fingers he puts it on his index finger. Dave Hole is an anachronism, to say the least.. He is also a monstrous slide guitarist and a very good blues-rock singer-songwriter, by the way.
Awesome video - I'm rubbish with a slide - just makes a bloody racket...
😂
What I haven't seen is the acoustic section he's added to his set.
The Hubcap Resonator, with Steve Conn and Sam Broussard sittin in. (and never overlook how good Dave Ranson is on bass)

Fil,
Thanks for doing Sonny Landreth! I was looking for a good live video but didn't find one, it's great someone found this for you. He's great live or in the studio.
Any love for the Hellecasters out there?
ua-cam.com/video/d424fO4RZpg/v-deo.html This is a 2012 show and the song is "Back to Terra Firma". Some great playing here especially the beautifully controlled feedback John Jorgenson displays. All three guitarists in this band are great but John is a superstar multi-instrumental musician. He plays many different styles including rock, country, bluegrass and gypsy jazz.
Or this one with the band doing Terra Firma (mainly John) followed by Sweet Dreams (mainly Will Ray); ua-cam.com/video/bjR-CdRf3jA/v-deo.html
Thanks!
If you wanna enjoy ;try to make a vid for a meeting of the spirits u will like it i garantee.
Thanks!
really Fil, check out Pete Drake... steel guitar
👍
Lol!!!! He needs one more string to occupy his pinky😝😝
😂👍
Fil I am gonna find " Satisfied Mind" w/ the talking guitar and post it here
Ok!
Damn he looks like he could be Joe Walsh's glassy eyed twin brother and they both play slide ..lol
👍
o. and while I am blathering check out Wylie Gustafson.. yodeling fool LoL
😂
The other thing that he does very well is muting. He is using the finger next to the slide to dampen them.
👍
Was tapping my foot like crazy to that one.
Just out of curiosity Phil (sorry if misspelled) have you ever played an electric hurdy gurdy?
The thing is pretty sweet you won’t regret listening to this, m.ua-cam.com/video/ypuaJLHK_LQ/v-deo.html
Not yet! Thanks!
What about George Thorogood ?
Thanks!
Jr brown please
Will do!
Even if you were deaf and never seen a guitar in your life, you can tell how good the song is and where the really good parts are......on Fil's face.
Fil, a little friendly advice.....never play poker! HaHa!
Haha don't worry, I don't! 😂
Hey Fil, someone else suggested some Sunday Valley era Sturgill Simpson in the Vince Gill “Oklahoma Borderline” comments. Might I recommend this one?: ua-cam.com/video/LcVdCI84tFI/v-deo.html
Thanks!
!?!
👍
Sonny's my cousin
Cool!
React to Mick Ronson the width of a circle live.
Thanks!
@@wingsofpegasus np thank you for spreading the word of a great, sadly underrated guitarist!
Sonny is one of very few guitar players that legit blows my mind. I've seen him a few times and and very often during the show I'll need to shake my head real fast just to make sure I'm actually awake and this is not some sort of dream bc what he had just played was so mind boggling that it should not be possible in the real world. He is one of, if not THE best living guitar player in the world. Also he's a SUPER duper nice guy and very humble. Got to do a meet and greet with him and he was so gracious towards his fans.
Well Said. I met him after a show and as you say, he really is a nice person and front row with Sonny Landreth is not something you are likely to forget.
Yes he was gracious. I shot this video and a lot of shows at this club. I had never heard of him before this night. Just wow.
I've seen Sonny two times, at a tiny little place in the wake of Clapton's Crossroads tour. I was feet away from Sonny. I could see every grimace of concentration and every drop of sweat. Probably the greatest and most intense live guitar performance I've ever seen.
Cool!
pretty cool, scott. i don't know if i'd want to be that close. A guy i used to jam with saw Roy Buchannan i believe twice (week night gigs) and would stand right in front of him, gatherering everything he could. This guy took Jazz lessons as a teenager, and could play! (i believe he did this with YJM, too). Myself, never. Players need their space.
If you're anywhere near Zakk during a gig, bring a squeegee and a designated driver. You'll be soaked by gallons of beer and staggering drunk from osmosis.
You obviously remembered to breathe... lolol Cheers!
I first heard Sonny from the cheap seats with John Hiatt’s band the Goners in 2001. I could barely see him, but wow! The next time was in 2005 on a festival stage, and I was up close and personal like you. He was just as you described, completely into what he was playing and absolutely amazing.
I live in Lafayette. There are some TREMENDOUS musicians around here. Sonny Landreth, Sam Broussard, Don Hayes, Wayne Toups, Tab Benoit. One of the best live music scenes in the country.
I had the chance to visit Lafayette a few times. Truly a great music area.
I've seen Sonny live twice. Once on his own and once with John Hiatt. He is truly an amazing talent! Also met him, super nice guy.
Cool!
I've seen Sonny a couple dozen times now. I've seen him solo, with Hiatt, Buffet, and Zachary Richard. (even made the inner cover art on Grant Street. well, my disembodied hands floating over my wife's(Susan) head did. lol) I have seen a lotta slide players over my 61 years, but no one has his tone/touch.
home.earthlink.net/~uncleslayton/photos/postpics/GrantStreetLinerArt.jpg
Cool!
This is some Pedal To The Metal for sure.
Getting to see Sonny live tonight in Crowley Louisiana about 60 Km from his home and maybe 40 km from mine. Grand Opera House of the South
Zydeco - the best exponent of the genre - bar none! talent personified. To have the skills and the talent of Sonny - I can only wish.
i keep telling myself to leave this alone but, here again :) Great pick again!! Much like Joe Pass, i could hear a handful of notes from Sonny Landreth and know it was him. The fretting behind the slide was unique for him and done masterfully. Faves are "Congo Square" and basically anything from "From The Reach".
Cool!
Check out the Reverend Horton Heat, thanks for the great videos
Thanks!
I would vote yes on the Reverend Horton Heat!
The most original slide player ever for me.
👍
Nice one, Fil! Algebra homework???
"Sonny has reinvented a new way to play guitar. And he doesn't just play slide. He's doing stuff behind the slide and ahead of the slide. It's like algebra to me. I couldn't figure it out in a million years, but it completely kills me to hear him play. His intonation is frighteningly good." ~Vince Gill
Thanks & Cheers!
👍
It's almost as if each finger on both hands are independent from the others. For me, just chord shapes and strumming is difficult...splits my focus. I always thought Sonny was schizophrenic or savant; it's the only explanation for that multi-tasking ability..(lol). Kinda like walking, talking, chewing gum, calculate pi, solve Quantum Gauge Theories ....algebra!
lol
Super nice, humble guy, too. I was very pleased when Clapton got him some exposure at Crossroads. Amazing to watch close up.
And again, i have learned something, thanks!
Sonny Landreth is a slide guitar master in my book. Incredible and innovative technique. He's also a pretty good singer, most of his albums aren't strictly instrumental. My favorite Landreth albums are his 1st live album and "From the Reach" which features quest appearances by Eric Johnson, Clapton and others.
Cool!
He plays behind the slide to make Melody's or add a different voicing to his open tuning
Did not see this one coming. Was very popular around Chicago for a time. “New landlord” got solid radio play from an amazing radio station we have.
Also seemed to be smart guy. I remember he did a tour as the opening act for John Hyatt, then he and his band became Johns band. Getting paid twice
😂👍
When the man comes arounds
Props to the camera man.
Dynamic! I appreciate this mixing of slide and fretted play, as sometimes all slide starts to lose my attention.
👍
Ever considered doing a short interview? Sonny is one of the nicest people on the planet. I'm willing to bet he would sit down and talk to you. Just a thought.
It's possible in the future!
@@wingsofpegasus He's in London next Wednesday...
Go to the show and record a video to review. No rights issues there. lol
He always stays after his shows to grip and grin.
@@wingsofpegasus Ask him if he still carries a swatch from one of Duane Allman's flannel shirts as a gris gris, in his guitar case.
Refined and tasteful . My best sliding devil to me (so far). Thanx!
No problem!
Thanks for that. I found Sonny here in YT and thought he was something special, but not being a guitarist, ( I'm a pianist ) I didn't know enough about guitar playing to back up my opinion of him. It's very reassuring to know that my instincts were correct.
👍
Glad you got around to Sonny, man can slide!! A slide that is pleasant to my ears, most are not. You are busted, you were grinning too much. Darn good analysis!!
Thanks! 😂
You HAVE to check out Eric Sardinas, the beast of the resonator guitar.
Thanks!
Another great review Fil.
This guy is fun live. Jaw hanging good.
👍
Sonny and Derek are the best slide players in the world
👍
Add Kelly Joe Phelps but I agree ;)
Hope it’s OK to insert a link. You’ve most likely seen this, but here are Sonny and Derek playing Congo Square together. Amazing... ua-cam.com/video/58Bzfy4Rh94/v-deo.html
Hi Fil, can you do an analysis on Jose Feliciano and Jim Croce if possible?
Thanks!
I'm So glad you ran that one Fil! Sonny IS AN AMAZING PLAYER! Very creative & passionate towards his music. Great pic again Brother Fil! !
Thanks!
Thnx! :)
