Thank you for posting this. This was the 3rd NES game I've ever owned, and one of the most difficult games to beat. I never beat the game (Never found the boss in Labyrinth or reached the boss in the world of hell). Playing the game on the emulator many years later, I still didn't figure out how to beat the boss. And now I've seen the end. I have closure now; thank you.
It's the other way around. Athena was released before Crystalis. You'll note that one of the enemies in Athena is essentially the same game sprite as one of the early enemies in Crystalis.
@Bananadine swim behind the octopus quicly and stay in the floor, get close to him but do not touch its mouth if you are carrying the chain ball just 2 hits will be enough to defeat the cute octopus!
I never got past the end of the land of Labyrinith the first time, although I did managed to get the scroll from the wall. Sort of suprised the bosses fell so easy to the ball and chain, I always went for the flaming sword, usually. That might have been one of my problems right there.
Wow, I had no idea it was so long and there were so many warp points, its much more advanced than most people realize, the problem was it was simply too hard.
Man this game is a beast! Finishing it several times back in the day (no game genie!) is probably my best NES feat. I know it's horribly flawed...but I'm wondering if this could be a candidate for the hardest NES game. Its definitely up there wit Battletoads and GnG. It took me months to finish it and I'll admit, I had to call the Nintendo Hotline to find out that I had to not pick up the bad harp...but even with that tip, it still drove me nearly insane. Good times. ^_^
thanks for posting. I never beat this game when I was a kid. I got to the medusa like boss with the one eye. Was using the arrow necessary for killing it?
@phightinphillies it does make sense--this game is decent, I like it too it's got some severe flaws but the basic stuff you do in it is pretty fun kids love to jump on AVGN-type bandwagons, is all "everybody knows" E.T. is the worst game ever, etc. well, the worst game ever is some half-finished Flash thing that hardly anybody played, or something the famous ones are never as bad as they're famous for being
I dunno what in the hell possessed me to buy this game back then, I could only get up to world of sea and I have no idea what the hell this guy is doing
holy crap - i feel the same way completely. i friend of mine and i played this game as kids and it was the only title out of maybe 100 or so games that we played that we could never beat. it has plagued me for years, but this video showed me the light. i can finally say with complete truth that Athena was the gayest game ever made.
I guess we do have to be thankful for really horrible games like this. It provides a lot of mistakes for game developers to learn from. Now we know how NOT to make a game. They should really include games like Athena in schools that teach programming and game design.
I remember CRACKING UP when I played this game at a friend's house back in '87!! The music was so bad, the graphics so ugly and Athena's head looked bigger than her whole body. When my friend tried to defend it's "awesomeness," I almost peed in my pants from laughter!! This game had to be one of the biggest piles of SHIT on the NES...hands down!! Athena needs a good ass-whipping for sure!!
I had this game and it was impossible to pass. I don't know if you could save game on original nes but on my pirate nes it was impossible making this game pain in a$$ and I gave up. Year ago I did it on emulator and realized that without save game it is really impossible.
The game seemed pretty good to me to, here's my version of a complete walkthrough in detail on how to easily beat it: ua-cam.com/video/SE7FYoV_95M/v-deo.html
@Bananadine Cheetahmen 2, which AVGN covered, is pretty much as bad as advertised as its glitches were quite bad - games that glitch to the point of being unable to complete them are certainly candidates for "worst".
そういえば、ラストステージは各ステージボスのオールスター総集編みたいな感じだったな。思い出した。

thanks for posting this, i had a love/hate relationship with this game and never actually ever got around to finishing it
i love it my name is Athena too i love my name and cluture
this game has some pretty good music, like in the cave, and in the world of Hell, that beat is hot. but ny favorite is the song from the frist world.

I didn't think it was even possible to beat this game. It's about one step up from Cheetahmen 2.
What does that little blue dress do?

The World of Ice has the best music I think!

The Green Blobs in the beginning of the game look very similar to the blobs in Chrystalis...for the NES of course...
A lot of NES games released around the same time had similar endings.

the main objective of Athena is to not accidentally pick up one of those useless swords.

NES souls
I like the arcade version of this better. Although the gameplay is pretty much the same.

unlucky man, Athena is forever a virgin.
Amazing how you made a hard game look easy. 5/5.
sadly, SNK has gone bankrupt.
This is the Sequal to Psycho Solider~ Athena
This game had more glitches in it than you can imagine.
@phightinphillies it does make sense--this game is decent, I like it too

what the hell was going in the last boss fight

You mean Zero from MMX and MMZ series? Athena came before Zero.
@xAzureIzumix No, Psycho Solider came after this one. : )
Wait, so when you get to the end of Land of Labyrinth, you have to go and beat all the enemoy bosses again? Damn.
I guess we do have to be thankful for really horrible games like this. It provides a lot of mistakes for game developers to learn from. Now we know how NOT to make a game. They should really include games like Athena in schools that teach programming and game design.
Snk? oh.. THAT Athena, the same one that apears in King of Fighters series came from this craptasticular game.

jesus christ. I was done after the first level of this game.

I think the only thing good about this gamer is the protagonist. The rest of the game seems somewhat repetitive and overdone and redundant.
@Bananadine

One of the hardest and most awful game ever made..I truly hated this game with a passion.
