Just a quick note on the mix, because I think many may be thinking this: yes, the mix is incredibly aggressive and also over-compressed. Hearing the drum mix by itself will actually give you a very good idea what it takes to mix an additional layer of drums (mine!) into an existing and, essentially, finished song:
Kick, snare and toms, are LOUD and especially articulate. The mix is also very bright. This coupled with a slight high-pass filter on the track underneath immediately makes my drums pop out more, and without this approach my drum mix would be drowned out by the already loudly mastered version of the original track. My goal is to get the track underneath as loud as possible (for full immersion) while still hearing every note I am playing on the drums. Tricky balance, and very subjective!
Stoked to make these drums-only mixes and videos available to you guys! It should make some things a bit clearer.

I'm loving these drum only version's!! I always wondered how you got your snare sound, but it sounds like you use a lot of overheads and room mic's in your mix?
TONS of room mics in the mix! Took me years to figure out that THAT's where the real snare sound comes from. This room was very small, and almost completely acoustically dead/dry, so I set up two wide mics as room mics, and simulated a bigger room size with reverb. Don't worry, I plan on making very detailed "making of" segments on this series, on the video and the audio side of things, so I'll elaborate further on that soon!

Cobus This comment has saved my sanity. Been trying to get a snare sound im happy with for months and sending some of the overheads to a reverb channel has really brought life to the snare. It sounds awesome :D!

Now I have a legitimate question as I am a drummer but I am not fully knowledgeable about kits. Is there any way to tune a bass drum to get this sound or is it a specific kick drum you need for it? I love this kick and I want it so bad.
I guess you can tune it to sound somewhat close to this but what makes his kick sound so good is the mic. A good mic and hands of a GOOD SOUND GUY can change the sound of your drum drastically! In reality his kit doesn't sound as good as it does on a video, though I bet it is still sounds fantastic!
Vadim Vecher The first thing that makes a drum sound good is the drum itself, the way he tunes it and the way plays it, not the engineering beside.
DrummerDenver Yes for sure. Firstly comes the tuning. And also the skins being used. But EQ and compression can do wonders for any drum kit.
get yourself a good batter head, for example an Evans Emad 2 or aquarian super kick 2 or remo power stroke 3 - anything similar down to preference really. - you dont necessarily need a super expensive mic, like other people have said EQ works absolute wonders, even in basic programs like garage band. Its going to sound like that through a live recording or similar through a PA, it doesn't sound like that acoustically with your own ears in the room with it. It'll still sound good though lol.
yeah eq compression mic placement mic selection, heads, tuning,or the lazy way triggers what I do is get a a trigger and a mic and blend them both so that the trigger does the attack sound and the mic adds the tone of your bass drum and fullness
