- While other manufacturers panicked or faltered in the 1970s, Mercedes-Benz could simply take everything the world could throw at it in its stride, creating one of the classiest and most timeless sporting grand tourers the world would ever see - the C107 and R107 SL.

Morning folks, hope you all enjoyed the video!
Hollywood loved the car. Appeared everywhere to show wealth, beauty and style ..
My father bought a 1978 Mercedes 350SL in 1985 that was still like new, and even today, it’s still incredibly solid and reliable. Of course it has been well maintained, but you’d never know it’s a 45 year old car if you drove it. Even the doors close with a solid “thunk” and nothing in the car rattles or is coming apart.
In Florida, in the 80s, you were a boss if you had a 450SL. Such an elegant car. I went to a school that had kids with wealthy parents. Dino Ferraris, Citroën SMs, BMW 5 series, Corvettes, and Jaguar E-types were in the parking lot. Each car had a personality vibe, but the kids with the SLs were really respected back then.
The SL R107 is one of the best roadsters ever made. Its the last of its breed without the costly and senseless complications which came after.A fine R-107 is a treasure to behold.
gotta love an R107, just wish I could afford one 😭
Time to feature the Mercedes 190 2.6 Sportline! All the design features of the SL, plus two remarkable features: a straight 6 shoehorned into a car never intended to have a straight 6. The re-engineering was done by Porsche under contract. And second, the. first outing of Mercedes 5 link rear suspension, an engineering revolution that endured for years. I had one and still regret selling it.
I remember having quite a crush on Mercedes car range in the 1970s as a teenager, and by no means considered them ugly, old fashioned or conservative, but their cars after this series and the W123 series appealed to me less and less as time went on , I’m lead to believe their quality status too has slipped further down as time went on.
I love Sunday mornings. I get to watch you waxing lyrical about all things old and automotive. And what a car to wax about. The SL/SLC is a true all time great. It's also one of the first cars I got to work on in '76 when I started work straight from school in the local Merc/Porsche/Ferrari dealer. Yeah, I know, the dream job for a 16 year old car nut! I loved the SL then and still do. If I had a choice (and some lottery winnings) I would have a 450SLC myself. What a car. Thanks Ed, loved this video.
Good review and well researched. The R107 is a landmark car. While other manufacturers developed faux convertibles with all sorts of overhead ironmongery (Stag, first XJS Cabriolets and, much more successfully, Porsche Targa), Mercedes alone developed a full convertible. Some complain about short rear travel of the seats, but that was intended so as to keep the heads of driver and passenger close to the roll-over bar built into windscreen surround. The quality of construction and materials is beyond comparison. The ride is exceptionally comfortable and better than many modern cars and fitted with one of the several V8's offered of the years, progress is relaxed and effortless. I have a 1981 380 SL and enjoy driving it regularly. It still feels modern.
£600 in 1973 is equivalent to £92k today! A classic car given the classic Twin Cam treatment. Brilliant as always Ed🙂
One thing I like about your films is I get as much out of LISTENING to them as watching them. While it's useful to see the lights you mention or the shape of the doors you explain things clearly enough I don't need to.
Another Brilliant Video Mate, Peak Mercedes Benz for me here and still a great looking car today.
Deserves some more views. Nice run though this car. That engineering philosophy the opposite of the innovation that was happening at the same time in the UK, France and Italy that took risks that often didn't pay off!
I bought a R129 SL320 straight 6
What I remember the most about the R107, is how hard it was to change the padding on the upper dash when they got cracked by the sun or just old age "Not a easy job." Hmmm - - -
While I love the classic R107, for me the ultimate SL is the R129. I think it has aged extremely well - another masterpiece by Bruno Sacco.
What a lovely car! I remember desiring the SL very much in my early teenage years. Fantastic review of the car and its history with great use of multiple photos, information and video. Plus your narration is calm and informative while being delivered with petrol-head excitement bubbling underneath. Keep up the good work!
Brilliant car always saw them on Dallas back in the 80s what a cracking car
I’m on my third one……I’ve had other classics but always go back to the 107
