MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further. - Навчання та стиль
Looks great, but I think wrapping the slat feature around the side of the peninsula would look even better!
You need an anti-chafing insert for the MC
I probably would've done a half wall on the backside of those cabinets. That way, you could run the electrical for the outlet through there instead of the cabinets. I would've made the half wall narrow enough to make the slats flush with the wall to the left. I agree with someone else's comment about wrapping the slats around the peninsula. Maybe even tried to curve the corner slat to mimic the counter slab. Overall, it still looks nice.
You can't use MC like that, the friction tabs on plastic boxes are for Romex. MC needs to be landed in a knockout, using a clamp connector so that the sheathing can't rub the wires and cause a short or a fire. And if you want to use a plastic box with MC, you need to use bonding bushing since the metal sheathing needs to be bonded to ground, as it would be in a metal box. The best practice is to always use a metal box with MC for this reason.
this ^. to add you are also going to want to install an anti-short bushing - it's a red piece of plastic that prevents the metal sheathing from rubbing the wire over time and causing a short. also, probably going to want to use a GFCI outlet or circuit breaker for this circuit.
Like a true house flipper 😂
Unfortunately, Mike has good intentions but a long history of messing up electrical. In the bus build where he turned an old schoolbus into an RV, he put an outlet in the shower.
@@BillPairaktaridis wasn't trolling? Because that sounds hilarious. Was it at least GFCI?
In Europe we just use special High-Tack adhesive to mount these to the wall. Saves you filling all the nail holes and getting the stains when applying the finish.
Looks great. I would have put the outlet on the side where the counter top is not as long.
Maybe he will put stools there and people can charge their phone
Very nice work on that peninsula Mike! 👍👍
Mike I love your progress on this project.
Welcome back. The peninsula looks great.
The use of blue painters tape on the saw base helps minimize scratches and smudges.
I've been searching for kitchen island ideas and I hit the jackpot with this video tutorial! The minimalist design is exactly what I've been envisioning for my space, and the materials seem affordable and easy to find.
You do you, but thinking about how much crap in a kitchen will get stuck in those grooves...a cleaning nightmare!
Lol totally
If you cut the hole for the box too wide, you can fill the gaps with drywall mud or the fast drying white drywall patch stuff. Then when you put the cover on, there won't be a dark gap.
the felt fluted panels will work really well in a bedroom for sound proofing
thanks for the idea!
The MC cable with no connectors to the old work box is so funny , and dude got his knee pads on upside down 😂
What does this mean?
Yeah, he missed the bushings.
I'm just here to see the comments from the electricians.
Thanks for the nod to mid century modern
Im so happy for this house renovation. Can’t wait for the finished renovation
Love the look. Nice job 👍
👏🏼 the slats look nice; have wanted to try this to my island as well as my cabinets and island are also wood tone
More modern cabinet faces would have fit the “modern” look he’s going for
I love these panels. I’ve used them to build my own headboard in my bedroom. I’d definitely wrap the side of the peninsula as well, for a beefier more finished look
Very beautiful, Mike!❣️
Why would you run the cable through the lower corner of the cabinet instead of the upper side/ceiling which isn't usable space or visible unlike the base/corner
Looks awesome man! 👏🏻
If you ran the electrical conduit across the top of the cabinets and dropped down to your outlet, the conduit would be hidden by the drawers and much less obtrusive to items stored in your cabinets.
I love the veneer island front!!!
Dude you can’t use mc with a box like that, looks good tho keep it up
Why is it an issue to do it that way?
I can't wait to see what you do to upgrade those old cabinets. The peninsula came out great but a wrap around would have made it shine.
Looks great!!!!
Beautiful work!!!
Man this looks great, nice job!
Nice job!!!
Like the new tools ❤
Amazing!!
Wowza Mike!!!!
Awesomeeeeee ❤❤❤
JS I would have brought the counter out even with the refrigerator and cabinets on the opposite side and add a wall beside the refrigerator.
SUPER PRO!!
i dont know how big of a deal it is but my only concern is that people might get a little carried away when mopping and knowing mdf this could cause a small issue but ive got no idea
Very Nice.
Nailed it, LOL.... wrong.... screwed it, LOL
Was just wondering how far you had made it!! 🎉🎉🎉
Nice
Awesome video to give my bar a new look! What kind of nail gun do you use?
Love the slats :) Would like to do a slat accent wall in my house some day, but those pre-made panels are sooooo expensive for what you get…
No one is going to mention the island receptacles isn’t gfci?
good point!
I think I would have done the Baseboard on the bottom as well, just so if things get spilled they cant geht into the back and the baseboard is a lot easier to clean.
You could have used "Akustikpaneele" (I don't know the English word). I like that they have black in-between. It gives them a more modern vibe and there's no felt you can see and that might become dirty over time. But all in all, great work!
This arent ,, Akuatikpaneele / Acoustic Panels,, - theyve nothing to do with Acoustic Treatment - its just overpriced Wood on Wood and in between some fabric. But because normal people have no idea about Room Acoustics, they think they buy something that helps
Loved it! That is the newest trend these days. I was going to do a wall that my TV is on. But at the bottom, when you do well dirt get under the small gap? How can that be fixed?
Also what if you covered all the cabinets with that as well to look like hidden doors.
I like the way it turned out! Although, I do feel like you could have done the slat wall yourself and saved some money, also used solid wood
I am always happy when I discover you in my notifications! Great job!
i more nice if the wire run at top in the cabinet rather than bottom
This is actually insane i love it.
buy 1x2's and tack them up, save yourself $500
You need to fix that first outlet before you put that house on the market 😊
Looks good, but comes across as the 2005 beadboard trend around islands when not in a modern kitchen.
It's a nod to mid century modern design.
@@lovly2cu725 The problem is its in a 1990 kitchen. It looks great when you have the full look, but it's current state makes it appear like an early 2000s reno of a 90s kitchen.
Great. Now your modern peninsula doesn’t match your old ass oak cabinets.
Curious how many times you’ll be told your knee pads are upside down.
He got caught out with some
Code violations, so he just made a video about how to add outlets. 😂
Your cute. 😊
Well future homeowner or tenant of this house, use this video as proof for a lawsuit from improper electrical wiring.
Never mind nailed it! More like fucked it !
You didn’t “nail” the power outlet. Looks like there’s gaps around the side. Do better next time.
why’s Mike always shouting? 😂
First! 🎉
These kind of works have to be done by a professional electrician in Germany. I am all in for DIY but with electricity... I dont think its a good idea..
And tips on how to become a contractor?
You didn't nail that outlet, the hole is clearly visible so a best it's a shoddy job...
Looks outdated.
It's a mid century modern detail in a mid century house. The stone work pattern on the outdoor planter is mid century modern.
You talk about not doing Electrical if you dont know what you are doing. Well better take your own advise. Get an electrician and get it done right. I know this sounds like i am being an a**hole but Electrical needs to be done right or can burn a house down or have nuisance tripping. Also make sure the outlets are gfci protected
You are being an ass, you didn’t even point out what he could do better. The only problem I saw and they’re not really problems, is the wires that are feeding the peninsula receptacle when fed into the source receptacle box have no insulation biting inside the box. Also weighing adding another outlet into the circuit, but that receptacle shouldn’t be getting heavy use. Perhaps a bit more clamping would’ve been good but I don’t see anything majorly incorrect. Point it out if you do. Encouraging each other and helping each other is much better than trying to tear each other down.
use this video as a WHAT NOT TO DO video for electrical. this is dangerous and should have a disclaimer on hand so no one else watches this, and burns down their house.
What did he do wrong?
the style of the island and rest of the kitchen cabinets does not match and honestly doesn’t look the best
Can’t believe you people say “1/16 of an inch” instead of 2mm…
why are you screaming the whole time you sound like on stand sales man for cheap kitchen tools. your project looks nice and the american electrical laws are so non excisting great you can just throw in a cable.
Dude come on, if you don’t know how to do electrical properly, DONT DO IT, YOU ARE VIOLATING CODE AND MAKING IT UNSAFE
This whole house is a botch job, I hope he fixes it but since that’s unrealistic, I kinda hope nobody reasonable buys it.
the amount of crap i see like this from DYI guys who think they know how to install electrical properly is straight up dangerous. the metal sheathing needs specific boxes to used like that. Just hire a professional for crying out loud. "Up to code".... ya, no. Stop showing people how to do things you don't know how to do properly. Thats how inspections are failed and fires start. I'm all for DYI, but don't do stuff you haven't been 100% trained in.
I still can’t believe that you can do your own electrical in the USA. Anyway, looks good.
He probably shouldn't. Not done correctly
