    Bug hammock and poncho/tarp is the move in the Deep South in the summer. Mainly for fire ants and not doing of heat exhaustion when it’s still like 90 some nights. Honestly just getting off the ground without a net and tucking your pants/sleeves/etc is the best if it’s extremely hot.

    Omg yesss !! Make a comparison video about the MSS vs USMC sleep system I also love maybe in the future you do USMC cold weather gear vs army cold weather gear. I have the frog system and the army 7 level system and I really feel like the USMC frog sacrifice it’s effectiveness in cold weather for the fire resistance and I would love if you made a video about that as I feel like I’m the only feeling like the USMC FROG is lacking. I was in 10th mountain at Ft.drum so I understand a lot about the army cold weather stuff but when I got out i decided to get some USMC stuff especially because I live in Florida and I felt the USMC bivy would be perfect and then i decided to get some frog gear too and I just always go back to the MSS and army cold weather I feel like it just works better. Also I think doing the video on the MSS vs USMC sleep system is going to be cool because I really feel like the USMC sleep system isn’t as water proof as the MSS and is a tighter fit and I feel like that tighter fit makes it feel warmer as there is less air to warm up. Idk just my idea I’m throwing out at you but I think it would be sick to see you make a video about these two systems

    Ideal for me has been tarp, ruck hip belt as pillow, full body bug net thrown over ruck and feet to create a sort of bug net lean to/ pyramid. Works pretty well for range days/ live fire.

    Great information. All have there place but some are more versatile than others. I always start with a small tarp and ground pad/roll mat. Then add whatever is necessary. Bug net, hammock, insulation, etc. Head net comes every time!

    Really appreciate these hotweather videos, I feel like it doesn't get covered nearly enough considering that the majority of the US is hot most of the time. Also, you can always tell someone is real when they reference S2

    had a couple of nights getting chewed by midgies last month, plus a lyme scare following. bought a headnet after that, but I'm sticking with my full tent.

    For the hammock you should put your feet on one side and your head on the other side. Left to right. This will allow you to sleep flat. If you stay centered on the hammock your but will dip low and you will sleep in an awkward V

      I had no idea that’s why people lay like that haha. Thank you!

  • @foobar9229
    @foobar9229 2 місяці тому +3

    Laying on the ground fully dressed is a different approach and might be great also but the hammock option is my choice: full protection from the bugs, best comfort and breathable, no clothes needed, no flat ground required. Air convection cools your back fast even in summer so an adapted underquilt or a sleeping pad inside the hammock is necessary. And of course a tarp above. For the best experience, the hammock should be 10-11 feet long minimum for an adult to allow diagonal lay, have an integrated bugnet and ridgeline, and the straps should make a 30° angle with the horizontal, with the head side slightly lower than the feet side (meaning the ridgeline does an 5-10° angle with the horizontal). With the right straps and technique to tie them, any trees should fit easily, it should be straightforward to find a spot in any forest area.

  • @robertphillips93

    Also suitable for many hot weather locations is a lightweight single layer tent with great ventilation, like the OneWind bivy tent @ 1Kg and a whole side of bugnet with top vent and opposite side lower venting. Main drawbacks would be the need for a ridgeline or two tent/trekking poles, plus loss of ventilation when the "awning" front is zipped closed in rainy conditions. Personally, I'd overtarp with a poncho before zipping that shut!
    In cold wet conditions, the issues will be condensation and maybe high winds -- it's not a mountaineering or even a heavy duty tent.

    In over 60 years of camping in Florida's heat and humidity there is only one item that works for me. Here tents become sweat lodges and become quick ways to lose several pounds of perspiration every time you are in one. A good double bottom jungle hammock with attached bug netting offers 360 degree ventilation and 100 % comfort. The double bottom stops bugs from biting threw it to you. The netting protects the top half of the hammock and you.

    Mosquitoes can penetrate thin clothing, so if anyone is wanting to wear quick-dry lightweight material, you'll want to combine this with a repellent. The skin-safe tick sprays made from stuff like peppermint oil will also work against sand flies/noseeums very effectively, but you'll still need a separate spray for mosquitoes.

    • @Bambi-lu
      @Bambi-lu 2 місяці тому

      the only way against ticks is permethrin, natural scents and oils may eventually work as a weak stunner

    a net hammock is much cooler and it gets you up out of the bugs, thorns, snakes, rocks, roots, snow, mud, water, brush, Steep hillsides are not a problem with a hammock. Amazon sells 1/2 lb each 'cut leaf" camo nets that hide you very well. the hammock CAN be hung just a few inches off of the ground. Amazon also sells a 1/4 lb each full body bugnet "suit', which protects you wherever you are. both items can be used as longjohns if it's cold

    The much-anticipated raid mod BDU top video arrived and was worth the wait. How do you get an idea of the chest pocket alignment? The arm pockets are lined up with the shoulder seam. BDU tops are an overall great layering item to have. I used mine with an ECWCS level 2 waffle top underneath. It was very warm but not bulky. This video motivated me to get into DIY raid mods. I thought about getting some used ones to learn on. I have a seam ripper and can remove the pockets and flaps. However, I would struggle to complete the raid mod because I don't know how to sew. What would you recommend to get started? Lyme is a shitshow and makes being in nature less pleasant than it should be. The last time I was in Yosemite I was in shorts and a windbreaker. If I was in hot weather BDU pants or a raid mod or standard BDU top it would have saved me from a lot of mosquito bites. Thank you for posting the video and giving me the inspiration and motivation to raid mod BDU tops. Which pants to you recommend for hot weather? Keep up the great content.

    That sleep pad will work in a hammock to avoid cold butt syndrome, pad only needs to be about 40 inches long as a torso pad. A minimalist camp is to wear that poncho while leaning against your pack or a tree plus use a 55gal contractors trash bag as a bivy bag, I cut my trash bag down the center leaving a foot box turning it into a top quilt.

    Those look like Altama OTBs. Have you waded water in them? If so do they seem to expel water quickly and dry out like a pair of jungle boots?

    • @KitCreep
      @KitCreep  2 місяці тому +3

      They’re so light and the material doesn’t like to soak up water so I’d say they’re better than Jungle boots. Plus they won’t give you nerve damage in your feet like leather jungle boots lol

With a gen2 frame & suspension and without the MSS carrier pouch it feels like a nice update to the medium Alice with some extra space on the lower frame
