Dr. Svante Pääbo - Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes
Вставка

- This lecture was recorded on March 2, 2014 as part of the Distinguished Science Lecture Series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society in California (1992-2015).
Svante Pääbo is the founder of the field of ancient DNA and is the director of the department of genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. In Neanderthal Man he tells the story of his mission to answer the question of what we can learn from the genes of our closest evolutionary relative, culminating in his sequencing of the Neanderthal genome in 2009. We learn that Neanderthal genes offer a unique window into the lives of our hominin relatives and may hold the key to unlocking the mystery of why humans survived while Neanderthals went extinct. Drawing on genetic and fossil clues, Pääbo explores what is known about the origin of modern humans and their relationship to the Neanderthals and describes the fierce debate surrounding the nature of the two species’ interactions.

so much respect for Dr. Paabo!!
There have been new surprises in the 6 years since Paabo was at this event.
Paabo rules - he's the coolest scientist. Consider what (say, I) read in textbooks in the 1970s-80s growing up, what we knew about paleo, compared to now: vague ideas from the shapes of bones and tools and nothing else. Now? Fantastic. D.A. NYC
and this was 6 years ago ! i wanna see more :D
Wonderful!
Came here because it said a year ago. But is actulay 6 years old ...
@Gros Buck - Although the talk was held on March 2, 2014, that is not when this recording was uploaded to UA-cam. Much of the discussion still applies.
Interesting-except that this is now a few years old, and one thinks that this business of speciation is probably chaotic and messy. Much as the clerks and bureaucrats of every profession desire to fit things into categories and classes, life probably does not proceed by pretty diagrams
I think we should bring them back.
The large amount of genomes in non-African people and the long timeline together means that, as Paabo said, that the out of Africa (male) people could make a child, while our brothers were less successful (and not for trying). I think that is the only reason we lost our dearest cousin. In the timeline there must have been a lot of intermingling and caring between each other. The old saga of 'modern' people killing Neanderthals is beyond stupid. The fact that the Neanderthal genome is still in us (from 0 to 4% - talking 2020) means they are still inside us.
Maybe one day we could recreate our cousins, but what about the risk for them? They are Humans - but even now people are discarded for the color of their skin, or anything else.
There'll be ethical issues, you'll need a human surrogate mother, there's that, and also we don't even treat each other very well, so they'll be abused for sure, why would they even want to be here? Also their genes will probably be passed on to future generations, and we don't know the health implications. But having said that, yes, I want to see one too!

Why neanderthals went extinct?
Could the Homo neanderthalensis have been extinct because of a poliovirus?
Thanks for visiting, Svante
So what about Cro magnon.? I thought europeans came from them, thats way only in
europeans have rhesus negative.
neanderthal have rhesus +.. The Denisovan in asia have B..
Dr. Svante i came up as 82 % Neanderthal in the 23 and me test ...can you study me ?
He is not reading this, but now Im curious see pictures of you and of those results.
@@Madferreiro high cheekbones , strong prominent brow ,deep set thin almond eyes . naturally more muscular than average female. with lower body fat percentage 99.9 % eastern european ,medium ,hour glass figure , broad swimmers shoulders . in comparison with hip to waist ratio. Size 2 ,5'5" used to be 5'7" but have spondyloslithesis L5 S1 ,L4 S1
You mean it says you have 82% more then most.
@@Joellarainbow most people have 2 -3% or so 23 and me says ...Everything else they said i should be ,i am the complete opposite .
@Maria Madalena Lima not for me ,i just look in the mirror:)
Hi,similarley ptrerifired wood, polymer of graphemsheets with eamulsion ctystslline new position ancient whart once was living flexibl structure common in many species see whale, elephant, thanx, bliss,XAMichael
God bless him
Now compare Neanderthal and the Relic Hominoids that we commonly know as Sasquatch/Bigfoot.... Since we have DNA of both... Please pick up the torch and let's do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your comment on a video uploaded on the Skeptics Channel is Gold... Big Foot lol....maybe he should investigate into figuring out the genome of Godzilla or King Kong.
