  • This is a really rare and cool video of most of "it's a small world" at Disneyland from 1998. This is absolutely amazing because for some reason, it's one of the only videos that I have seen from 1998. There were a couple changes shortly before (1998) and after (1999) this footage was filmed. In early-1998, after the very first iteration of "it's a small world" Holiday, there were a couple minor changes to the 1992 John Debney soundtrack that they had at the time (1993-2002) instead of the original 1964 soundtrack. In the North Pole/Sweden room, they added the 1992 Swedish Band audio from Disneyland Paris version of this ride, and at the same time, the English vocals that were in Asia and Africa from 1993-2002 were added to the South Seas room from 1998-2002, which had previously (1993-1997) been the English heavenly chorus present in hello, finale, and goodbye rooms from 1993-2002. In addition, there was another major change in 1999, which was the removal of the butterflies and rainbows in the hello and goodbye room, to be replaced with the animals on boats and postcards that are still there today. Although you can't see the goodbye room, you can see the hello room including the first half, which still had the rainbows (c.1981/82-1998), unlike the second half which already had the sea serpent and children of the world (1991-present). I find this very sad because I personally like the older hello/goodbye rooms from the 60's-80's better than the ones from the 90's to the present, and think that the rainbow version was the last really good version, after the banners and flowers of the 60's, 70's, and in the case of the banners, the 80's as well, since they lasted until 1991 when they were replaced with the sea serpent scene still there today. So it is very cool to see that version of the hello room in it's very last year. This is really amazing footage and I'm happy to share it with you, so I hope you enjoy.

Everything except the beginning of the "Hello" room looks very similar. The attraction looks very similar except the children in the Hello room have the slogan "The Happiest Cruise That Sailed Around the World" and the Disney movie characters. The Spirit of America scene wasn't here a long time ago. I like that this attraction has a scene that represents the USA. Very good quality. Did you know something? John Debney, who composed this soundtrack also composed the music for Elmo in Grouchland? That movie was released a year after this video was taken.

Yes, the welcome and goodbye (latter not shown here) have changed many times over the years, although except for when they change them during the holiday overlay (goodbye less so since early-2010's), the current iterations of welcome and goodbye have actually been there for over 20 years now (1999), with only a few minor changes before, during, and a little bit after the 2008 refurbishment. I prefer the older (60's-80's) versions of these rooms because they are much closer to the classic Mary Blair style found throughout the rest of the ride, although I don't dislike the current versions either, and actually find the plywood children (added in 1991) quite charming in their own way, probably because they are a similar art style to the Disneyland Paris version of the ride. I also have welcome room through the years linked below.

I completely agree about this in Disneyland version which is why I hope it never comes back, and prefer the original version for this and other reasons. It also fits much better in Disneyland Paris version imo, because it feels more European like the actual ride in Paris, while the others (US and Asia) feel a little more American, although at the same time they are all a showcase for all the wonderful cultures that make up the world.
