The Story Behind Some Of History's Greatest Military Blunders | Politics By Other Means | Timeline

  • Examining the strategic failures of politicians. Included: the defeat of the Crusaders at the battle of Hattin in 1187. Also: Fascist Italy led by Benitto Mussolini invades Ethiopian territory in 1935; and Ronald Reagan orders the invasion of Grenada in 1983.
    We have long saluted military genius and bravery. But the other side of the coin is military incompetence - a largely preventable, tragically expensive, yet totally absorbing aspect of human behaviour.
    From the Crusades to Vietnam, history is littered with examples of stupidity, obduracy, brutality and sheer breath-taking incompetence. Lack of communication, technological failure and a misplaced sense of superiority have led to the deaths of thousands of ordinary soldiers, let down by their masters and betrayed by arrogance. Using a combination of history, human interest and archive footage underpinned by powerful story-telling, Great Military Blunders charts man’s folly and cruelty in a series of stunning debacles, spanning almost a thousand years of conflict.

    The video doesn't mention the invasion of Grenada happened two days after the suicide bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, where it was revealed they marines guarding the gate were not issued any ammunition. One can't help but wonder if a large part of Regan's motivation for the invasion was to provide a distraction and morale boost from his last debacle.

    There's an interesting parallel between the fascist dictators Mussolini and Franco.

Plenty of people are also just idiots in lots of areas or work with logical fallacies and don't realize it. Most of them are also though well intentioned people, but not all.
      High level politicians, are like high level business people though, they only manage to get up there 99% of the time, by having fought others for it and having been seeking that position of power through often whatever means are necessary. The result, you usually only get the dirtier more ruthless types in higher positions because they are the ones that want that position, and will do the things that allow them to attain it more easily than others. Still not necessarily bad people, but much less likely to be people that share the moral compass of your average person, and view on doing what's right and not cheating or doing more questionable things. And also, once you sinc years into something and finally get to that position, business or politics, you are much more cautious about losing it and will do more to hold onto it than someone who just won a local council seat or who got promoted to a local manager position or something over a year of effort and work.

    1:38 -- The First Crusade was undertaken in response to a request for aide by Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos. The Turks had captured most of Anatolia, and Alexios wanted military assistance to retake Nicaea and Antioch. Pope Urban II urged the princes of Europe to undertake this war of liberation.
    The Reconquista in Spain and Portugal (the capturing of Muslim territories by Christian rulers) had been underway for some time already.
    There was no intention to massacre the Muslims. European warfare during this age tended to be Very brutal.

The answer is simple, they conquered until some one could stop them. There holy book tells them they can declare holy war for two reasons, to drive out an invader and to spread Islam. Any ruler who wants more land to enrich him self has a ready made excuse. They had spread them selves from India to Spain, they controlled all of the trade from the East, they hammered every island and country in the Mediterranean and demanded protection money from the countries who tried to do business, including the United states. I do not understand why the Christian countries are held up as villains in this, they were victims who simply tried to fight back. OP's post is factually correct. However, the Crusades are almost ALWAYS an accusation against the Christians or an accusation against the Muslims. BOTH sides had events that were brutal, BOTH sides had people who tried to prevent slaughter, and BOTH sides fought to spread and defend their faiths as it was the focus of their societies. NO ONE'S SIDE WAS INNOCENT. Both Christians and Muslims had brutal killers and peacemakers, both sides had people massacred, and both sides had people who fought to defend the people instead of lining their pockets at their expense. Faith can bring out the best, and bring out the worst, in the people who base their lives around it.

    Operation Compass has been highly propagandised by the British who had been continuously beaten by the Axis at that point in the war. Understandably they used the victories in Operation Compass as a moral boast for Britain, and this was a great victory for them.
    However the following needs to be considered to understand what actually happened rather than accepting the rather disrespectful and juvenile stereotypes of the Italian Army in North Africa.
    The number of troops involved 36,000 men (British Commonwealth) versus 150,000 men (Italian) is often represented as if the 36000 British confronted 150000 Italians in one battle in one place.
    This is a gross misrepresentation.
    In fact Operation Compass occurred over a 2 month period (9 December 1940 - 9 February 1941) and the Italian forces were spread out over 500 km's. Consequently the British never confronted the Italians in one grand battle, but attacked the less mobile Italians garrisons piecemeal where the Italians could not bring their vast numerical advantage to bear decisively.
    ie
    Attack on Nibeiwa (5000 British Commonwealth versus 4100 Italians)
    Battle of Sidi Barrani (36000 British Commonwealth versus 60000 Italians)
    Battle of Bardia (16000 British Commonwealth versus 45000 Italians)
    Battle of Tobruk (17000 British Commonwealth versus 22000 Italians)
    Action at Mechili (4000 British Commonwealth versus 5000 Italians)
    Battle of Beda Fomm (16000 British Commonwealth versus 25000 Italians)
    This coupled with the fact that Italian equipment was not equal to what the British had led to their defeat during this Operation.
    Oddly enough, the propaganda the British used against the Italians would come back to haunt them when on 8-15 February 1942 in the battle of Singapore.
    Here 85,000 British Commonwealth surrendered to 36,000 Japanese in one battle at one place despite greatly outnumbering the enemy.

    • @MaegnasMw
      @MaegnasMw 2 роки тому

      About the Italian equipment being sub par, I can believe that and it was not the first time they went on a campaign unprepared (or, at the very least, under prepared!). They did that when they attacked Greece, October 28, 1940. First of all, the Italian infantry used a rifle made in 1891 (yes, that is EIGHTEEN ninety one! Fifty years old technology!!), compared to that, the Lee-Enfield rifles used by the Greek Army in 1940 were modern ones (made at around 1914). Second, the myth of the Italian Army being mechanized. Maybe, compared to armies that had ONE or TWO mechanized pieces of equipment, they were mechanized, but compared to any European nation which paid the slightest attention to its military no, they were not! Add to that the fact that they chose one of the most inhospitable terrains for motor vehicles and the argument dissolves really quickly! Third, and this one just shows their levels of "professionalism", they arrived in Albania, one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, at the end of October, supposedly to conduct mountain warfare during late autumn/early winter bearing SUMMER uniforms!!! Yes, the brave souls tried to traverse an entire mountain chain while fighting, in practically winter, in their underwear!!! It is a miracle they did not lose much sooner!!
      Musolini was indeed one of the greatest comedians of the 20th century - too bad his people had to pay the price!

      Some context here would help. Some of the sudden urgency of displaying military might had more than just a little bit to do with the fact that only two days before, the U.S. Marine Corp suffered it's worse loss of life since Iwo Jima when a truck bomb destroyed their barracks in Beirut. That had to feel like a real gut-punch to the world's strongest military and it's commander in chief. So while we were about to bug ignominiously out of Lebanon, it seems it would look good to put on a show in the Caribbean, just so the "shithole" countries don't get any funny ideas about our commitment to crushing governments we don't like.
      The sideshow in Panama was basically more of the same. In this case, H.W. Bush shaking off the image of a wimp by taking out Noriega, who was in fact, our wholly owned subsidiary and good friend..... until he wasn't. But like any good bully, we don't pick on other tough kids, we pick out the weak ones. And in Noriega's case, he was our tool from the git so it made even more incomprehensible even from the standpoint of "politics by other means".
      And I'll just add that the "global war on terror" is even more abstract than the ones mentioned above. Who would we presume is going to "surrender" in the GWoT? Who is the enemy? Where do they live? This is nothing more than a conceit and sophistic argument for endless and consequently, winless, war forever. But this is the U.S. We can certainly afford the $768B/year we send to the Pentagon, without debate, without a reasonable audit, (But a few $100B we spend on bridges and roads is reason to reach for the pearls).

    Muslims make out they were the victims in the crusades. Over 500 battles were fought on European soil, leading in the end to Spain becoming a Muslim caliphate and vast areas of Southern Europe too. The first crusades were defensive. Do some research yourself and you’re in for a surprise.

    • @michaelnixson9099
      @michaelnixson9099 5 років тому

      Smart Food I’m no strategic mastermind, but I can see the need to pursue an enemy which is united under one faith. The first Crusade was a definite defence by offence. I’m not in touch with the dead, but you’d have to talk to the Pope of the day. He was in a precarious situation and Rome was in real threat militarily.
      No matter how one views it they were fighting Muslims. They were holding a loose alliance fighting for Islam. The battles happened any which way you look at it and the Muslims drew first blood and were a very credible threat.
      I think the whole Christian Military strategy was led badly. They should have secured Europe and then left the East to Islam. North Africa and much of the Middle East was Christian ( from the time of the Roman Empire) and it was changed forever by Jihad.
      I’m sure there were power plays in the Muslim camp just as there were in the Christian one. This was their undoing. Too much hunger for power and they didn’t care how many of their own people died in the process.
      The Islamic side had a key advantage because of their solidarity.

    • @smartfood7076
      @smartfood7076 5 років тому

      michael nixson You should probably learn more about the crusades. What Islamic alliance do you mean? They fought each other. The Seljuks which were the ones the crusaders attacked had fought the Ghaznavids and conquered other Islamic territories. Although the fear about the spreading of Islam was a major reason the crusades happened it would be too simplistic to pretend this is the only reason and saying the Muslims drew first blood simply ignores almost everything except the religion of the people involved, because these wars were fought hundreds of years before the first crusade by another Caliphate against Byzantium, which by the way belonged to a different denomination of Christianity than the catholic states which was a source of tension and conflict between them. And the crusades weren’t even defensive from the beginning: the pope also hoped to end the schism and expand his power and participants often also hoped to gain power, wealth and of course kill muslims, religion was certainly a important reason, but not the only one. But the thing you really should have known is that the taking of Jerusalem was the goal of the entire crusade from the start. It was probably the most important topic in pope Urbans speech.

The Seals were carrying a lot of equipment and the parachutes cords became tangled. This compromised their ability to maintain flotation. Only 4 of a much larger Seal Team were lost. The leftist writer failed to note anything except their drowning in an attempt to paint them as incompetents instead of lauding their bravery. Typical ploy of the left. Try to paint these heros as invading idiots. Free Enterprise is the only way for a society to move forward. Ask the East Germans how they liked 40 years of communism. For example look up this word TRABOT. Then look up these letters. BMW. Therein lies the difference between left wing policies and free enterprise. Let Freedom Ring!!!

      The number of medals seems very high, agreed. I know that some of the units there specially volunteered and likely received medals. I think the piece avoided mentioning that there was significant resistance, including killing helicopter crews. This wasn't a joke. The producers of the piece are very biased and have a message for the audience to shallow. I read a book years ago that included the wife of a killed helicopter pilot being told about her husband being killed by Cuban machine gun fire as they approached the runway. Was this D-Day - no. However, it was a real military operation. A mini-Black Hawk Down.

      @@DinoCism Oh, it was clearly illegal, but "blunder" is questionable. Moreover, the illegal invasion of Grenada was hardly comparable to others in history, including thos noted above. Italy killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and attempted to retain Etheopia as part of a new Italian empire in a war that lasted almost four years, until Italy was defeated by Allied forces. The October, 1983, invasion of Grenada, the date of whoich is celebrated in Grenada as a national holiday of thanksgiving, resulted in 622 total casualties, 135 U.S., 84 Cuban, and 403 Grenadian. An election established a Grenadian government in December, 1984, long after most U.S. invaders had departed. You can look up the bucther's bill for Soviet invasion of Finland and Russian invasion of Georgia, Ukrauine, and Chechnia at your convenience. And the areas conquered in thise invasions remain part of the Russian Empire to this day. The U.S. invasion of, and conquest of much of, Mexico is more morally reprehensible, as were the bloody conquests by almost everyone else over the millenia.
