Saving the Vaquitas

- There could be as little as six of them left. The vaquita, a small porpoise living in Baja California, is on the brink of extinction.
For Brut, filmmaker Léo Hamelin boarded Sea Shepherd's Sea Horse vessel to witness the crew’s sometimes controversial efforts to prevent illegal fishing - and give the vaquitas a chance to survive.

It’s 5 am and I just happened to google the rarest animal in the world and the Vaquita was the first thing on the list and my heart broke when I saw how cute they were. I immediately started looking into them and found this video, posted 11 days ago at this point, showing a group of people putting in such a huge effort to save them. Thank you guys for what you are doing! I have been thinking about going into marine biology for a few years now and seeing this has amplified that passion even more. You are all brave and amazing people who have gone, what feels like, largely unnoticed fighting for an animal even I just learned about today and I’m 25. A vaquita tattoo with “milagro” under it is next on my list. Keep up your amazing work!
Bro, that is so crazy. I literally did the same thing I just went on Google and search that what was the rarest animal on the planet and then it said the Vaquita and then I just kept searching it up on UA-cam

The footage is intermingled from 2018. Very misleading. Sea Shepherd 2023 is not the same. They don't even retrieve & count nets anymore. They signed a secrecy agreement with Mexican Navy in 2022 after Captain Paul Watson left because losing transparency & honesty is unethical. Sea Shepherd have currently absent from the ZTA. Haven't even bothered to report their absence.😢
your heart breaks easily, doesn't it?
@@lovebaja no but your bones might :)
I support Sea Shepard. They do the hard work that is necessary for our oceans.
Sea Shepherd now do nothing. I follow Captain Paul Watson Foundation to continue the legacy.
Only 2 years ago I did a project on marine life, while doing my research I came across these beautiful animals
There situation and lack of people doing things for them has lived rent free I'm my head and so knowing these people actually trying to save them brings a smile to my face and warms my heart ;)
I commend all of you on this valiant effort. No animal should go extinct at the hands of human myth and overconsumption.
I've visited the Sea of Cortez once to freedive and snorkel... just once, the absence of life amongst the reefs was disheartening to say the least. And the net boats everywhere from Puerto Penasco to El Golfo makes one quite uneasy.
Compassion to the Mexican people there just getting by, I wish their government had subsidized an equitable replacement to the catastrophic overfishing.
But alas, governments rarely care when not pressured.
And now, history tells us it's too late for the Vaquita.
Gracias hermosa vaquita, que vivas en nuestros recuerdos!
The disappearance of the vaquita is such a waste...that little mammal has been endangered for so long, and COULD have been saved had the Mexican gvt done more, and mostly local people cared, which they did not.
I hope they will survive
They're the cutest animals in the ocean

"there are an estimated just 10 vaquitas remaining in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Now, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has issued the first-ever extinction alert in its 70-year history, to spur action to help the world's tiniest and most endangered marine mammal"
I hope the vaquita grows population fast
Keep up the good work guys!!! 😢 I read that mothers can have calves annually. So it’s not all doom and gloom, but we all need to pitch in everywhere to save the cutest cetaceans in the world!! Lekker 🇿🇦♥️💔
Thank You for all you do. - NJ Keep doing what you do and don't listen to the rest of the world. It's stupid.
If I apply for membership onboard, I will probably be a lifeguard and diver, but I don't want to be a part of the crew and am also not going to be anything of it at all, but I am on Seashepherd's side. Thank you Seashepherd crew for your dedication to saving the vaquitas. Saving the vaquitas is what I am about.
thank you !!!!
Thank you for being there for our ocean💪🏾🤙🏾
I'd like to see a video on how many animals have been poached to extinction by traditional Chinese medicine!!
If you like this, watch the documentary "Sea of Shadows" about the Chinese and organized crime vs. the vaquita.
Could create an entire series with endless seasons 😑
I guess removing fish/seafood from your diet is one of the best ways to help save the Vaquita for good.
I became vegetarian years ago and hope more do in order to help these vulnerable animals.
It would be nice if this little porpoise group can survive somehow.
Thats not helping though is it? Its not overfishing thats causing their extinction. Its illegal fishing for the Totoaba fish who are then sold to China.
If its a zero tolerance zone then why do they get 3 strikes?
Ridiculous isn't it! The boatramps that the poachers and illegal fishers aren't even monitored. Its a cover-up.
If you like this, watch the documentary "Sea of Shadows" about the Chinese and organized crime vs. the vaquita.
man i would sink all those poachers boats and the people on them they have no clue what is going to be lost to the world. The fact that they are mad and attacking in a huge group means they are definitely being affective in getting rid of those nets.
When I moved to La Paz, Baja California Sur in 2012, Sea Shepherd had already been in the Sea of Cortez for years, much earlier than 2015.
I couldn’t be on that ship. Only eating vegan??? No way. They lost me.
Beautiful ❤️
Save the vaquita! ❤
Wish you luck
Im sorry im immature but i heard the sound it makes from the other room without context and thought someone was farting
This is a very sad situation. The poachers are doing something that will kill off a single species, but they threw stones and malitov cocktail bombs at the research vessel.
They're like small 🐬 dolphins
Me queda claro que a todos los presidentes mexicanos y mas a AMLO le vale completamente riata la especies en peligro de extincion
Amazing work, thank you everyone!
😢😢😢😢
Honestly the only option would be to net them off into a large sea pen.
What they tried before was just poorly thought out. The animals should not be removed from the water or have any human contact during capture, they also should not be able to see all walls of the sea pen at once. They shouldn’t feel trapped. A whole pod should be captured.
This can be done, but it should be done with causing the least amount of stress possible to the animals.
You need to corral them into a large netted area, and if possible tag them with GPS. You would then only need to protect and guard the area that is netted off, having insurance that the vaquita are in that area.
Fish may need to be caught live and released into the seapen occasionally to make sure there are a sustainable amount of food.
thank goodness their survival doesn't depend on you
@@lovebaja oh sorry, I guess we are in better hands with the ones who captured them and putting them in tiny sea pens. Leading to the only captured one of them dying and being an udder failure….
What the hell is your better suggestion?
"udder" failure? lol The ZTA enforcement and leaving vaquitas alone. You must misunderstand if you think I'm suggesting it's a good idea to capture vaquitas. You seem very confused. @@Specogecko
@@lovebaja I don’t think you understand anything I’ve said….. 🤦🏻♂️
Try reading it again and thinking a little
Thank you but I'd rather not. @@Specogecko
