Making a Coffee Carrier out of Recycled Plastic

- We designed and made this flat-pack coffee cup holder with a carry handle for those coffee lovers who always seem to be carrying a million things at once.
This was made with 550g of collected recycled plastic waste HDPE from bottle lids and milk bottles. Once the plastic was all nice and melted and pressed into a sheet, we chose the scroll saw to cut this out. This is because it has a super thin blade so the waste produced is a lot less. We also collected all of the waste that came off all the tools and used this again in another project.
We went on to use this as a prototype for a product that we sold for over a year. Sadly we have discontinued our two and four-cup coffee caddies, as they were still fairly tricky to make, even when injection moulded, as they came in three parts. So we just need to come up with some clever design tweaks to make it a more viable product.

It looks like you could figure out a quick adaption to make that coffee carrier a phone of tabled stand too. Yall are brill!

Neat idea! Most box stores carry deburring tools for around $10 give or take. Can be used to clean up and soften the edges both inside and outsides edges like you did with the utility knife but will make it easier and smoother to the touch 🤙

Make sure you stash the carrier in your car, not on a shelf!
That was my first thought too before he showed the shelf. It looks like it would fit perfectly in the little pocket on car doors. But a lot of people in cities don’t drive and just walk to work and grab coffee en route so a shelf would work for them. It’s a great product for anyone tho wether you drive or walk. I bet they could even make a bike friendly version.
Not a hot car though.
Now, create a cross-section piece so you can upscale to 4 cups when the situation calls for more coffee!

I absolutely love the idea of recycle plastic for practical purposes. However, is there ever a concern about creating micro plastics from the saw or rasp?
@charlesscheerschmidt244 there absolutely is, but they don’t ever seem to address it half the time :c
It's really sad that wood isn't used more for these sorts of projects. Also, remelting plastics can release toxic fumes into the atmosphere.
@@HershewedThey do talk about it in the long form videos.They run it thought the shredder and it gets remelted with the other offcuts .
@@Petr214Common misconception, only if it goes above a certain temperature. HDPE gives off very little and only if it’s burned
